This book was released on 1982 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Huntington collection of British art includes not only the unrivaled full-length, life-size portrait paintings, but also many examples of the less familiar, more informal, but charming side of British portraiture--the drawings. In this book, twenty-five of these drawings are reproduced, each accompanied by a facing page of commentary. There are works in pencil, pen, wash, pastel, watercolor, and various combinations thereof. Some are presentation works intended to fill a more private and intimate function than the life-scale portraits in oil. Some are preparatory studies for works of art. Some are casual sketches made for the artist's own enjoyment or as a record of a memorable face. The drawings are representative examples of the work of twenty-five artists. They range in date from the early seventeenth century to the early twentieth and vary enormously in style and purpose. They include "plumbagos," miniatures in pencil done by the masters of the form, Loggan and Forster; drawings done in pencil and wash by Cosway, Lawrence, and Harlow; drawings by Greenhill and Gardner; and drawings used as preliminary studies for portraits to be done in oils by Ramsay, Fuseli, and Mortimer. Together with Wark's text, they demonstrate the quality of British achievement, the variety in types, and the fascinating complexity in appeal.

Book Synopsis A Biographical Dictionary of Actors, Actresses, Musicians, Dancers, Managers & Other Stage Personnel in London, 1660-1800 by : Philip H. Highfill
Download or read book A Biographical Dictionary of Actors, Actresses, Musicians, Dancers, Managers & Other Stage Personnel in London, 1660-1800 written by Philip H. Highfill and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1973 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like the works already published, these latest volumes of the Biographical Dictionary deal with theatre people of every ilk, ranging from dressers and one-performance actors to trumpeter John Shore (inventor of the tuning fork) and the incomparable Sarah Siddons. Also prominent is Susanna Rowson, a novelist, actress, and early female playwright. Although born into a British military family, Rowson often wrote plays that dealt with patriotic American themes and spent much of her career on the American stage. The theatrical jewel of these volumes is the "divine Sarah" Siddons: "She raised the tragedy to the skies," wrote William Hazlitt, and "embodied to our imagination the fables of mythology, of the heroic and dignified mortals of elder time." She endured much tragedy herself, including a crippling debilitating illness and the deaths of five of her seven children. Siddons played major roles in both comedy and tragedy, not the least of which was a performance as Hamlet.

Book Synopsis American Drawings and Watercolors in the Metropolitan Museum of Art by : Kevin J. Avery
Download or read book American Drawings and Watercolors in the Metropolitan Museum of Art written by Kevin J. Avery and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2002 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Metropolitan Museum began acquiring American drawings and watercolors in 1880, just ten years after its founding. Since then it has amassed more than 1,500 works executed by American artists during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in watercolor, pastel, chalk, ink, graphite, gouache, and charcoal. This volume documents the draftsmanship of more than 150 known artists before 1835 and that of about 60 unidentified artists of the period. It includes drawings and watercolors by such American masters as John Singleton Copley, John Trumbull, John Vanderlyn, Thomas Cole, Asher Brown Durand, George Inness, and James Abbott McNeill Whistler. Because the 504 works illustrate such a wide range of media, techniques, and styles, this publication is a veritable history of American drawing from the eighteenth through most of the nineteenth century."--Metropolitan Museum of Art website.
