Book excerpt: In his Preface to the 1902 first edition of Imperialism: A Study, imperial critic J.A. Hobson demonstrates his prophetic talents by noting, just as the Victorian age was ending and World War I was brewing, that "Imperialism has been adopted as a more or less conscious policy by several European States and threatens to break down the political isolation of the United States." Though the book speaks mostly of British imperialism of the period, Hobson inevitably explores the general principals-and hidden motives-of imperialist policy. Hobson covers: . the commercial value of imperialism . imperialism as an outlet for population . economic parasites of imperialism . imperialist finance . moral and sentimental factors . and much more. With imperialism again a hot topic in the political arena, Hobson's treatise continues to lend invaluable, necessary insight into a complex ideology. British writer JOHN ATKINSON HOBSON (1858-1940) was an historian and economist as well as a popular lecturer on the topics. His other books include The Evolution of Modern Capitalism (1894), The Economics of Distribution (1900), The Economics of Unemployment (1922), and the autobiographical Confessions of an Economic Heretic (1938).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Imperialism in the Eighteenth Century Not remiss in repressing infringements of their monopoly. Houstoun, a Scots surgeon em ployed for many years in the Company's factory at Cartagena, attributes the failure of its slave trade to its original exclusion from the cheapest slave-markets by the Royal African Company,1 but this disability ended in 1721 when an arrangement was made by which the South Sea Company engaged to procure all its slaves from the African Company at the rate of £22, 105. 'per piece' from the Gold Coast, Accra or Whydah, and £18, los. 'per piece' from Angola.2 In any case, it would not account for the unsuccessful voyages of the trading-ship. Nor can they be ascribed to its huge over capitalisation. In 1722 over was sunk in South Sea stock, and no doubt before the trading department was divided in 1723 from that which dealt with annuities, the con cessions of 1713 gave far too little scope for returns of sufficient magnitude to provide a considerable dividend on so vast a sum. Yet in fact the returns were inadequate even in relation to the comparatively small capital appropriated to the American trade, and this. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written in the dying years of the Raj in India and elsewhere. It seeks to explain, from the common person's point of view, what the empire is, how it was created, how it ruled, and the condition of its people. At the time of writing, Britain was hit hard by the Depression and among the questions raised daily in the country were issues of British naval supremacy, empire trade and "imperial self-sufficiency." Ralph Fox argued that British capitalism based on imperial monopoly was in crisis (at the time of writing (1933). He also argued that the question of socialism in Britain was determined by the exploitation of the colonial peoples. There was therefore an intimate connection between national liberation of the peoples of the Empire and the struggle of the British working class. This book remains important in any intellectual historical understanding of theories of Empire. It reflects the understanding of the British Empire and its manifestations primarily in India, and elsewhere, from the intellectual framework of socialism. Its value lies in the insight it provides into this type of understanding at the time it was written.

This book was released on 2010-01-05 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The abolition of the slave trade is normally understood to be the singular achievement of eighteenth-century British liberalism. Abolitionism and Imperialism in Britain, Africa, and the Atlantic expands both the temporal and the geographic framework in which the history of abolitionism is conceived. Abolitionism was a theater in which a variety of actors—slaves, African rulers, Caribbean planters, working-class radicals, British evangelicals, African political entrepreneurs—played a part. The Atlantic was an echo chamber, in which abolitionist symbols, ideas, and evidence were generated from a variety of vantage points. These essays highlight the range of political and moral projects in which the advocates of abolitionism were engaged, and in so doing it joins together geographies that are normally studied in isolation. Where empires are often understood to involve the government of one people over another, Abolitionism and Imperialism shows that British values were formed, debated, and remade in the space of empire. Africans were not simply objects of British liberals’ benevolence. They played an active role in shaping, and extending, the values that Britain now regards as part of its national character. This book is therefore a contribution to the larger scholarship about the nature of modern empires.
