Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many British cities were devastated by bombing during the Second World War and faced stark economic dilemmas concerning reconstruction planning and implementation after 1945. How did politicians, civil servants and local authorities manage to produce the cities we live in today? Rebuilding Britain's Blitzed Cities examines the underlying processes and pressures, especially financial and bureaucratic, which shaped postwar urbanism in Britain. Catherine Flinn integrates architectural planning with in-depth economic and political analyses of Britain's blitzed cities for the first time. She examines early reconstruction arrangements, the postwar economic apparatus and the challenges of postwar physical planning across the country, while providing insightful case studies from the cities of Hull, Exeter and Liverpool. By addressing the ideology versus the reality of reconstruction in postwar Britain, Rebuilding Britain's Blitzed Cities highlights the importance of economic and political factors for understanding the British postwar built environment.

Book excerpt: This report seeks to highlight some of the issues raised during the Committee's visit to Iraq in June 2006, which was undertaken in order to examine the operating environment being experienced by UK forces and to meet senior members of the new Iraqi Government. Amongst its findings, the Committee notes its concern at the deteriorating security situation in South Eastern Iraq, particularly Basra, and the implications for the security of UK forces. It welcomes the progress being made in the development of the new Iraqi army but highlights the serious challenges remaining in the development of the Iraqi police service. The report also raises concerns over the problems with equipment which requires urgent attention from the MoD, the effects of the extreme temperatures which troops are having to deal with, the shortage of helicopters and the strain on both air and ground crews. The Committee's report questions the Government's confidence that UK armed forces are not being overstretched, and calls for urgent action to address the growing capability gaps; and concludes that the issues raised in the report gives rise to fundamental doubts as to whether the UK armed forces are structured, trained and equipped to fulfil the role envisaged for them in the Strategic Defence Review and subsequent policy documents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This authoritative history of the Treasury provides a new perspective on public policy-making in the twentieth century as it explores the role and functions of the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the consequent implications for the changing role of the Treasury. As the central department in British government, the Treasury plays a key role in decisions on public expenditure, and on raising taxes and loans. Professor Peden traces the development of the Treasury's responsibility for managing the national economy and looks at how it became increasingly involved in international relations from the time of the First World War. In further examining the relations between ministers and their official advisers, this history explores the growing influence of economists in Whitehall.
