Book excerpt: Early in 2007, the BC Lodging and Campgrounds Association (BCLCA) alerted the Ministry of Tourism, Sport and the Arts (MTSA) that the private sector had experienced a decrease in the number of RV sites available for overnight accommodations in high-demand areas. [...] As the lead provincial agency responsible for addressing issues relating to the growth and vitality of tourism sectors in British Columbia, Minister Hagen directed that a joint industry/government working group be struck to make recommendations on actions to increase the number of overnight sites for RVs in the short and long-term. [...] Although it is difficult to identify all of the factors affecting the overnight occupancy levels, preliminary research indicates that there are aspects of the BC RV experience that may be improved upon, providing the potential to increase overnight occupancy levels throughout the province. [...] The RV Park Working Group examined a number of barriers and challenges relating to this issue and reached consensus on fifteen recommendations that are provided for consideration by the provincial government and the industry (summarized in Table A). [...] While additional research to confirm the applicability of these trends and expectations to the BC experience should be undertaken, the research that is available points to a number of trends and expectations that should be considered.
