It welcomes the likely future reduction of financial support to farmers for food production and believes that any interventions should only be made when specific criteria are met. Whilst it supports payments made on environmental grounds, concerns are noted regarding the effects of agri-environmental schemes. The report also discusses the proposals for the Mid-Term Review of the Common Agricultural Policy, which it intends to examine in more detail in a later inquiry. A second volume of the report is also available, which contains minutes of evidence and memoranda taken before the Committee.
