Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bristol is a major city and port in the south-west of England. In medieval times, it became the third largest city in the kingdom, behind London and York. Bristol was founded in the late Saxon period and grew rapidly in the 12th and 13th centuries. Initially, seaborne trading links with Ireland and France were particularly significant; later, from the 16th century onwards, the city became a focus for trade with Iberia, Africa, and the New World. This led to the growth of new industries such as brass manufacture, glass production and sugar refining, producing items for export, and processing imported raw materials. Bristol also derived wealth from the slave trade between Africa and the New World. The city has a long history of antiquarian and archaeological investigation. This volume provides, for the first time, a comprehensive overview of the historical development of Bristol, based on archaeological and architectural evidence. Part 1 describes the geological and topographical context of Bristol and discusses evidence for the environment prior to the foundation of the city. The history of archaeological work in Bristol is discussed in detail, as is the pictorial record and the cartographic evidence for the city. In Part 2, a series of period-based chapters considers the historical background and archaeological evidence for Bristol’s development from the prehistoric, Roman, and post-Roman eras through the establishment and growth of Bristol between about 950 and 1200 AD; the medieval city; early modern period; and the period from 1700 to 1900 AD, when Bristol was particularly important for its role in transatlantic trade. Each chapter discusses the major civic, military, and religious monuments of the time and the complex topographical evolution of the city. Part 3 assesses the significance of Bristol’s archaeology and presents a range of themes for future research.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bristol and Its Famous Associations In connection with a city whose foundation dates before the Conquest, there must of necessity be many and famous personal associations which have gathered round its centuries of growth and progress. Impelled by a love of his native city, it has been the task - a fascinating one - of the writer to gather together, from every available source, biographical material, which he has organised under definite headings, and which he trusts will have a real and living interest for his fellow-citizens, if not for that wider audience, the general public. If those of his critics who scan the following pages will be good enough to bear in mind the enormous field these researches cover, they will perhaps pardon any omissions in these biographical cameos, many of which are omitted by intention. Kings and queens and others who have had merely an accidental or purely historical association have been ignored; the ordinary histories will supply their omission. By consulting, too, the best authorities, the writer has endeavoured to be accurate as well as interesting. In conclusion, the author desires most gratefully to acknowledge his indebtedness to that biographical treasury, The Dictionary of National Biography; the encyclopaedic Annals of Bristol's Froissart, John Latimer; the incitement, as well as material, derived from the works of the late John Taylor; and lastly to the generous and unfailing encouragement - without which this work would never have been written - of the proprietors of The Western Daily Press, Messrs. Walter and W. Nichol Reid. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: During his first years in America, William Henry Krause Pollock participated in some of the most important American chess events of the 19th century. Pollock played matches against strong players like Charles Moehle, John L. McCutcheon, Jackson W. Showalter and Eugene Delmar. This biography analyzes in great detail Pollock's chess play, as well as his career and life in England, Ireland and America. His American years unveil even more about the American chess landscape during the first half of 1890s, one of the most interesting periods in American chess history. Offered here are an unprecedented collection of annotated games played by Pollock (around 500), historical photographs and line drawings. Sources include historical chess journals and magazines with chess columns from America, the United Kingdom and Canada.

Book excerpt: By the late nineteenth century, the city had become the dominant social environment of Britain, with the majority of the population living in large cities, often with over 100, 000 inhabitants. The central concern of this book, first published in 1976, is to assess how successful the late Victorians were in creating a stimulating social environment whilst these developing cities were being transformed into modern industrial and commercial centres. Using Bristol as a case study, Helen Meller analyses the new relationships brought about by mass urbanisation, between city and citizen, environment and society. The book considers a variety of important features of the Victorian city, in particular the development of the main cultural institutions, the provision of leisure facilities by voluntary societies and the expansion of activities such as music, sport and commercial entertainment. Comparative examples are drawn from other cities, which illustrate the common social and cultural values of an urbanised nation. This is a very interesting title, of great relevance to students and academics of town planning, Victorian society, and the history and development of the modern city.
