Yet, for two decades, the CCP has been marginalized in the field of China study, despite the fact that the CCP continues to dominate both China's domestic development and external affairs amidst radical changes to communist parties in otherparts of the world. For better or for worse, the impact of any major changes in the CCP will go beyond China's national boundary. the analyses and research in this book look at how the CCP has been able to avoid the predicted breakdown of its regime and instead revitalize itself by reaching out to new social forces and strengthening its organisational machine. in this way, the book brings the CCP back into the focal point of our understanding of China's development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the contest for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination, politicians and voters alike worried that the outcome might depend on the preferences of unelected superdelegates. This concern threw into relief the prevailing notion that—such unusually competitive cases notwithstanding—people, rather than parties, should and do control presidential nominations. But for the past several decades, The Party Decides shows, unelected insiders in both major parties have effectively selected candidates long before citizens reached the ballot box. Tracing the evolution of presidential nominations since the 1790s, this volume demonstrates how party insiders have sought since America’s founding to control nominations as a means of getting what they want from government. Contrary to the common view that the party reforms of the 1970s gave voters more power, the authors contend that the most consequential contests remain the candidates’ fights for prominent endorsements and the support of various interest groups and state party leaders. These invisible primaries produce frontrunners long before most voters start paying attention, profoundly influencing final election outcomes and investing parties with far more nominating power than is generally recognized.

Book excerpt: A true entrepreneur always looks to the future, no matter what is bearing down—9/11, Hurricane Katrina, the Great Recession, or the BP oil spill. With wit, hard work, guts, and a few cold beers, Jeff O’Hara and his businesses battled, bounced back, and survived these disasters, and we are the beneficiaries of the lessons learned along the way. But O’Hara’s lessons are no dry list of rules on entrepreneurism: This first-time author is a gifted storyteller with an edgy, one-of-a-kind sense of humor who informs and entertains with tales of the tragic, the triumphant, and the places and people only New Orleans can produce. Accounts of O’Hara’s life as he earned his place in the hospitality industry deliver colorful, honest insights into just what it takes to become a successful entrepreneur. It’s clear he loves what he does and that his successes are a result of his love for his trade, his independent spirit, and, of course, a commitment to overcoming anything that gets in his way. O’Hara’s wisdom will inspire entrepreneurs and anyone who appreciates a great story—from New Orleans natives to the rest of us who are fascinated by the life of this great city.

Brick City’s infamous kingpin known as the Mayor is shockingly released after serving twelve consecutive summers of the lifelong incarceration that he was originally sentenced to. He owes all thanks to his larger than life, ghetto fabulous attorney, Tony Austin. The twelve year layoff has the Mayor feeling as if the streets miss him and his prosperous hustle game. He feels that the game is in dire need of his expertise to pump life back into it. His hood politics are in order as he embarks on a new and improved campaign. He’s been studying his blueprint for well over a decade and it’s now time to go to work. His mission is simple and smooth, so he thinks, as he puts the wheels and soldiers in place to regain control of the city. The Mayor’s plan seems to be hater and snitch proof for the moment, but that moment doesn’t last very long. His primary goal is to restore the city and lift the recession his way. Nothing will stop him; not even the gang leaders who are now in control or the Feds who trail him step by step. He will stop at nothing until his operation takeover mission has been completed. Will his mission be completed or will he go down in history as just another used-to-be-kingpin whose time has run out?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the development of the process of presidential selection from the founding of the republic to the present day, James Ceaser contends that many of the major purposes of the selection system as it was formerly understood have been ignored by current reformers and modern scholars. In an attempt to reverse this trend, Professor Ceaser discusses the theories of selection offered by leading American statesmen from the Founders and Thomas Jefferson to Martin Van Buren and Woodrow Wilson. From these theories he identifies a set of criteria for a sound selection system that he then uses to analyze and evaluate the recent changes in the selection process. Five normative functions of a presidential selection system comprise the author's criteria: it should minimize the harmful effects of ambitious contenders for the office, promote responsible executive leadership and power, help secure an able president, ensure a legitimate accession, and provide for an appropriate amount of choice and change. Professor Ceaser finds that the present system is characterized by weak parties and candidate-centered campaigns that lead to the problems of "image" politics and demagogic leadership appeals. He therefore argues for a more republican selection system in which political parties would be strengthened to serve as a restraining force on popular authority, public opinion, and individual aspirations for executive power.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brazil is a rapidly emerging country. Brazilian theology, namely the Theology of Liberation, has become well known in the 1970s and 1980s. The politically active Base Ecclesial Communities and the progressive posture of the Roman Catholic Church contrasted with a steadily growing number of evangelicals, mostly aligned with the military regime but attractive precisely to the poor. After democratic transition in the mid-1980s, the context changed considerably. Democracy, growing religious pluralism and mobility, a vibrant civil society, the political ascension of the Worker's Party and growing wealth, albeit within a continuously wide social gap, are some of the elements that show the need of a new approach to theology. It must be a theology that is both critical and constructive, resisting and cooperative, a theology that is able to give orientation to the churches, valuing and encouraging their contribution in society while avoiding attempts of imposition. The Churches and Democracy in Brazil, the fruit of years of interdisciplinary study of the Brazilian context and its main churches and theology, makes its case for an ecumenically articulated public theology. It seeks inspiration mainly in Luther and Lutheran theology, emphasizing human dignity, freedom, trust, the disposition to serve, and the ability to endure the ambiguities of reality, as well as a fresh interpretation of the doctrine of the two regiments. These are the fundamental elements of what makes human beings full members of the body politic: citizenship, their right to have rights and to be able to effectively live them, together with their corresponding duties, in a move of growing political participation conscious of their religious motivation in view of the commonweal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its first appearance fifteen years ago, Why Parties? has become essential reading for anyone wishing to understand the nature of American political parties. In the interim, the party system has undergone some radical changes. In this landmark book, now rewritten for the new millennium, John H. Aldrich goes beyond the clamor of arguments over whether American political parties are in resurgence or decline and undertakes a wholesale reexamination of the foundations of the American party system. Surveying critical episodes in the development of American political parties—from their formation in the 1790s to the Civil War—Aldrich shows how they serve to combat three fundamental problems of democracy: how to regulate the number of people seeking public office, how to mobilize voters, and how to achieve and maintain the majorities needed to accomplish goals once in office. Aldrich brings this innovative account up to the present by looking at the profound changes in the character of political parties since World War II, especially in light of ongoing contemporary transformations, including the rise of the Republican Party in the South, and what those changes accomplish, such as the Obama Health Care plan. Finally, Why Parties? A Second Look offers a fuller consideration of party systems in general, especially the two-party system in the United States, and explains why this system is necessary for effective democracy.
