Book excerpt: The superbly crafted stories collected in Alistair MacLeod’s As Birds Bring Forth the Sun and Other Stories depict men and women acting out their “own peculiar mortality” against the haunting landscape of Cape Breton Island. In a voice at once elegiac and life-affirming, MacLeod describes a vital present inhabited by the unquiet spirits of a Highland past, invoking memory and myth to celebrate the continuity of the generations even in the midst of unremitting change. His second collection, As Birds Bring Forth the Sun and Other Stories confirms MacLeod’s international reputation as a storyteller of rare talent and inspiration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of Pushkin's stories begins with 'The Queen of Spades', perhaps the most celebrated short story in Russian literature. The young Hermann, while watching some friends gambling, hears a rumour of how an officer's grandmother is always able to predict the three winning cards in a game. He becomes obsessed with the woman and her seemingly mystical powers, and seeks to extract the secret from her at any cost. This volume, part of a new series of the complete works of Pushkin in English, also includes 'Dubrovsky', the story of a man's desire to avenge himself after his land is unjustly taken from him by an aristocrat; 'The Negro of Peter the Great', a tale inspired by Pushkin's maternal grandfather; and the unfinished story 'Egyptian Nights', a meditation on poetry and the poet. Together, they represent some of the most striking and enduring pieces of Pushkin's prose fiction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of a new division of labor between machines and humans, in which people provide value to the economy with little or no compensation. The computerization of the economy—and everyday life—has transformed the division of labor between humans and machines, shifting many people into work that is hidden, poorly compensated, or accepted as part of being a “user” of digital technology. Through our clicks and swipes, logins and profiles, emails and posts, we are, more or less willingly, participating in digital activities that yield economic value to others but little or no return to us. Hamid Ekbia and Bonnie Nardi call this kind of participation—the extraction of economic value from low-cost or free labor in computer-mediated networks—“heteromation.” In this book, they explore the social and technological processes through which economic value is extracted from digitally mediated work, the nature of the value created, and what prompts people to participate in the process. Arguing that heteromation is a new logic of capital accumulation, Ekbia and Nardi consider different kinds of heteromated labor: communicative labor, seen in user-generated content on social media; cognitive labor, including microwork and self-service; creative labor, from gaming environments to literary productions; emotional labor, often hidden within paid jobs; and organizing labor, made up of collaborative groups such as citizen scientists. Ekbia and Nardi then offer a utopian vision: heteromation refigured to bring end users more fully into the prosperity of capitalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here are more than 60 tales that exemplify, support, and promote the strong values and character traits that we wish to instill in our youth today. They also support the character education that is being mandated in state after state throughout the country. Grouped into 12 sections based on specific values, such as love, perserverance, fairness, and cooperation (with a separate chapter on dealing with bullies), these tales have been passed down through the ages in diverse cultures and traditions from all over the world—from Japan and India to Greece, Scotland, Africa, and the Americas. There are folktales, fables, Zen Buddhist tales, stories from the Judeo Christian Bible—even true historic tales. At the end of each section, educator and storyteller Norma Livo offers activity ideas and suggestions for discussions pertinent to specific stories and values. In addition, there is an appendix of general activity ideas that can be used in character education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Small Faces & Other Stories is a trip back in time, charting the rise and fall of one of the Sixties most energetic and successful bands. It is the extraordinary story of how this bold four-piece, led by mercurial cockney Steve Marriot, found fame and then splintered by the end of the decade to evolve into Humble Pie with Peter Frampton, and the Faces fronted by Rod Stewart. Along the way their trademark songs Itchycoo Park, All or Nothing, Stay With Me and Baby I Love Your Way would influence future generations of musicians such as Paul Weller, Ocean Colour Scene and Blur. By way of anecdote, interview and analysis, Uli Twelker and Roland Schmitt lift the lid on the bands’ complex histories and the explosive characters involved that built one of rock music’s most enduring and successful family trees.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2002, in this innovative book two leading practitioners tell the stories of the people they have met as clients and how they, as therapists, tried to help them. Through compelling case studies, Peven and Shulman invite the reader into their thoughts and feelings about their clients, their processes and treatment techniques, and their subsequent successes and failures. The authors describe a cognitive, constructivist, interpersonal, dynamic approach based primarily on the principles of Alfred Adler's Individual Psychology. The case studies represent several different DSM-IV diagnostic categories, and the authors offer their own theoretical perspectives and treatment methods for each category. With compassion, insight, and skill, the authors take complicated material and present it in a clearly written and easy to understand fashion.
