Book excerpt: Who doesn’t wish to share his or her home with a cage full of “Furry Mongolian Friends” aka gerbils!? Author Susan Anastasi certain does! She describes these irresistible critters as “quiet, clean, friendly, curious, active, and easy-to-please.” In deciding whether the gerbil is for you, Anastasi offers this advice: “If you are looking for a seemingly limitless cache of cuteness—from their long, fanning whiskers and large almond-shaped eyes to heir bunnylike hind legs and tufted tail tips—then gerbils are for you!” Clearly bitten by the gerbil bug, the author begins by providing some basic natural history about gerbils, their origins on the Mongolian range, and an overview of their behaviors. Anastasi defends her favorite pocket pet and asserts that the gentle gerbil does not deserve its Latin name (Meriones ungiculatus), which translates as “clawed warrior.” Filled with terrific color photographs, Gerbils summarizes the basic needs of these adorable rodents, specifically addressing their housing requirements, the cost and commitment involved, and their interactions with children and other pets. The following are devoted to purchasing a healthy gerbil from a pet shop, hobby breeder, or shelter; introducing the gerbil to the home; housing and feeding; taming and handling the pet gerbil; health considerations and potential household hazards; breeding and raising the young; and exhibiting gerbils at shows. The discussion on housing covers the selection of the ideal enclosure, basic housing setup, accessories, safety, and a guide to cleaning the tank. The chapter “Taming and Handling Your Gerbils” offers a step-by-step socialization process to acclimate the gerbil to its new handler and surroundings plus instructions for handling the gerbil and discouraging nipping. All keepers will be interested in the chapter on keeping gerbils healthy through smart preventative care; topics covered include allergies; broken limbs and head injury; teeth, tail, and ear problems; dehydration; diarrhea; heat stroke; hypothermia; mites, and more. Gerbil enthusiasts who are looking to become gerbil midwives will find complete instructions for breeding and raising pups (baby gerbils) in the chapter about reproduction. It covers planning a litter, setting up a breeding tank, mating, caring for the pregnant mom, birthing, fostering, growth cycles, weaning, handling pups, and more. The chapter “Fun with Gerbils” offers ideas for games, art projects, photographing, and training gerbils to do seven fun tricks. Resources include lists of publications, clubs, organizations, and websites. Glossary of terms and index included.

Book excerpt: “What kind of Navy officer sits on his ship in the middle of the Mediterranean dreaming of gerbils?” That’s the question that Holly Robinson sets out to answer in this warm and rollicking memoir of life with her father, the world’s most famous gerbil czar. Starting with a few pairs of gerbils housed for curiosity’s sake in the family’s garage, Donald Robinson’s obsession with the “pocket kangaroo” developed into a lifelong passion and second career. Soon the Annapolis-trained Navy commander was breeding gerbils and writing about them for publications ranging from the ever-bouncy Highlights for Children to the erudite Science News. To support his burgeoning business, the family eventually settled on a remote hundred-acre farm with horses, sheep, pygmy goats, peacocks–and nearly nine thousand gerbils. From part-time model for her father’s bestselling pet book, How to Raise and Train Pet Gerbils, to full-time employee in the gerbil empire’s complex of prefab Sears buildings, Holly was an enthusiastic if often exasperated companion on her father’s quest to breed the perfect gerbil. Told with heart, humor, and affection, The Gerbil Farmer’s Daughter is Holly’s ode to a weird and wonderful upbringing and her truly one-of-a-kind father.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do some stories written for children have so powerful an emotional resonance for both child and adult readers? This is the question addressed by Margaret and Michael Rustin. in a book which offers a detailed critical reading of some of the best-known mosern British and American stories for children by writers such as E.B. White. Philippa Pearce and C.S. Lewis. The authors make use of psychoanalytical and sociological ideas in their approach, interpreting the stories both as metaphors of states of feeling often experienced by children, and as images of the wider society in which they are written. A particular theme of their discussion is personal and imaginative growth in childhood, and the ways this can be affected, both for better and worse. by separation and loss. In their detailed consideration of the narratives of the stories, the authors avoid theoretical jargon. and concentrate on works which have interest and meaning for adult readers as well as children. Narratives of Love and Loss is an important and accessible book which wilt be of especial interest to parents and teachers concerned with children's reading and imaginative play, and to those working in the fields of psychoanalysis, English literature and popular culture.

Book excerpt: Family Illustrated is a humorous look at family life from writer J. Michael Krivyanski. It contains his most popular columns that provide a funny and entertaining view of having children. Parents who read this book may see their own families being illustrated. DATING "My daughter would not be allowed to date until she reached the reasonable age of about forty-seven. Then only if she has her black belt in karate, kung fu and has won a few matches in professional wrestling." BIRTHDAY PARTIES "During a child's early years birthday parties are very popular social events that exist mainly for the parents of the child's friends. Parents bring their children to these infant parties, watch them spill things, fill their diapers and be very uninterested in anything going on around them except the dog's food dish or the cat's litter box." THE TRUTH "We parents can give our child lengthy, fact-filled lectures about the virtues of telling the truth no matter what the situation. In the same breath and without feeling the slightest bit hypocritical we will then remind this same child not to forget to put their tooth under their pillow so they can get some money from the Tooth Fairy."

Through the years, she became a consummate storyteller, regaling her children and grandchildren with tales from her life. Fifi always said she should write a book, and now, with the help of her son Philip, she's done exactly that. Full of vivid historical detail and the wit and wisdom only Fifi can bring, The Last Unicorn takes you from her family's humble origins in Ireland, through her own innocent youth, growing up in depression era Tarrytown, New York; to her life as a struggling working mom raising five sons, and to the twilight of her years. With insightful glimpses of life on the American home front and the Pacific theater of combat during World War II, the turbulent times of the 1960s and 1970s, and the dawn of new millennium, Fifi provides an eyewitness account of these historic periods. Fifi's tales encompass all the joys and sorrows life has to offer. Taken as a whole, they paint a portrait of a remarkable woman, as well as the many lives she touched and helped shape. The Last Unicorn is not only a family history, but a tribute to Fifi and her incredible generation.

Jonathan Rix, backed by extensive research, builds upon his wide-ranging professional and personal experiences to explore three conceptual innovations – models of certainty and uncertainty, the while of participation and communities of provision. Through these innovations, the reader examines the challenges faced by school systems in delivering inclusive and participatory experiences of learning. Topics explored include: • theories of education, participation and inclusion. • the constraints on our education systems as they struggle to deliver certainty in a world of uncertainty. • how the challenges of our systems collaborate with inequality to produce marginalised experiences of participation. • the exclusionary nature of our communities of provision. • how we can understand and enhance moments of participation. • how embracing uncertainty can lead to more meaningful participation and towards more inclusive communities. • policies and practices that enhance the possibility of education for all. This is a crucial read for any educator, educational leader or researcher with an interest in the development of innovative theory and practice in the fields of inclusive education and participatory practice.

While the consequences of major physical injury from a high velocity gunshot wound or from shrapnel from an exploding anti-personnel mine or from the explosive effects of an artillery shell or mortar were obvious, the effects of psychological injury were not. Adverse psychological effects resulting from war have been known for many years and labels such as Shell Shock or Battle Fatigue were applied. However since the Vietnam experience and subsequent research, those adverse psychological effects are now known as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. PTSD can result from experiencing a near death incident, or the violent injury or death of a mate or from treating the major wounds of battle casualties. A high percentage recover from the acute effects of psychological injury but for many, the experience may be the start of a chronic disorder that can affect the well-being of sufferers for the remainder of their lives. Dave Morgan gives a detailed and clear account of his battle with PTSD. He describes his traumatic experience in Vietnam and how PTSD gradually emerged after his return to Australia. He experienced negative thinking, confusion, intense anger, alcohol abuse, and thoughts of suicide. This caused great distress. He expresses his experience adn that of his family frankly and opens a window to understanding the problems of a man suffering from PTSD. In this he has made a valuable contribution and his book adds value to those who are interested in this chronic disorder. There is no completely effective treatment for PTSD, but people like Dave Morgan are doing all they can to reach that goal.

And she's trying to quit smoking. . .again. So when ex-cop Paul Santini calls, offering a cakewalk of a job finding some rich lawyer's runaway wife, Robin takes the case--without getting all the facts. She gets her first clue that something isn't right during a visit to the worried husband, Walter Wilcox. His story--that his wife's therapist is to blame for her disappearance--doesn't ring true, either. It isn't long before Wilcox is singing a different tune, one that includes his eighteen-year-old mistress, expensive trinkets, and Janet Wilcox taking off with a good chunk of their money. Only it isn't really Wilcox's money. It belongs to his employers, a couple of Russian wiseguys who don't take kindly to being swindled--and before Robin can tell Walter that she's found his wife in New York City, she finds him tortured to death. It's too bad for Walter. . .and even worse for Robin. Apparently, lawyers talk a lot under extreme pressure. They even mention names, like that of a certain part-time P.I. Now, with the Russian mob convinced she knows where the money is, Robin is on the run, desperate to find Janet, recover the stolen goods, and keep everyone she knows from becoming landfill. . .
