Book excerpt: Chloe Neill brings her trademark wit and wild sense of adventure to a stunning seafaring fantasy starring a dauntless heroine in a world of magic and treachery. Kit Brightling, rescued as a foundling and raised in a home for talented girls, has worked hard to rise through the ranks of the Isles’ Crown Command and become one of the few female captains in Queen Charlotte's fleet. Her ship is small, but she's fast—in part because of Kit’s magical affinity to the sea. But the waters become perilous when the queen sends Kit on a special mission with a partner she never asked for. Rian Grant, Viscount Queenscliffe, may be a veteran of the Continental war, but Kit doesn’t know him or his motives—and she’s dealt with one too many members of the Beau Monde. But Kit has her orders, and the queen has commanded they journey to a dangerous pirate quay and rescue a spy who's been gathering intelligence on the exiled emperor of Gallia. Kit can lead her ship and clever crew on her own, but with the fate of queen and country at stake, Kit and Rian must learn to trust each other, or else the Isles will fall....

This book was released on 2019-11-01 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hyper-socialised explores the challenges of late capitalist times for education systems, schools and teachers. It looks at how trends of accountability, ‘teaching to the test’, using pupil voice and reliance on network technologies are all connected to powerful social and economic forces, shaping the curriculum as it is taught in classrooms. Such forces threaten to overwhelm teachers but, in the right hands, they can also be harnessed to create, influence and teach a truly powerful curriculum for their students. Presenting a historical view of curriculum change, the book examines how society, curriculum and teachers are linked. Using geography as an illustrative subject, the chapters investigate what influences teachers, to what extent they are in control of the curriculum, and what else is shaping it. Divided into two parts, it offers An in-depth exploration of the relationship between society, teachers and the curriculum, including that what and how to teach remain wide open to debate Evidence-based research into the significance and implications of ‘hyper-socialised’ curriculum enactment for teachers and teacher education Four case study ‘portraits’ of geography departments and personal curriculum stories of each Head of Department Insights into the nature of teaching as a profession and how a crisis of teacher recruitment and retention may be addressed. Written in clear and accessible terms, this book is an essential resource for teacher educators, subject teachers, headteachers and educational researchers who want to understand how and why schools and teaching are changing – and what this means for them.

Book excerpt: Mast cells are tissue-localized cells that play an important role in immunity and inflammation. Following an offensive event they act as cellular sensors that via the activation of cell surface receptors launch a cellular response culminating in the release of a whole set of inflammatory mediators and products. This response is initially destined to restore tissue homeostasis, but in case of chronic injury or deregulation also promotes pathology. To further understand the action of mast cells in their environmental context it is necessary to decipher the molecular mechanisms of their activation as well as the ensuing cellular responses. This will allow identification of new strategies to promote their beneficial actions or, at the contrary, to interfere with their pathological consequences. While in the past many studies have focused on responses engaged by high affinity IgE receptor because of its implication in the allergic response, it has become clear that mast cells can be activated by multiple types of receptors initiating an intense molecular crosstalk between receptors and signaling pathways that can either synergize, antagonize and in some cases produce new types of responses. Mast cells can indeed react with an astounding diverse array of cellular responses that sometimes are engaged selectively. This Research Topic will focus on selected articles that shed some new light on the molecular mechanisms of mast cell activation, the possible crosstalk between signaling pathways and the ensuing cellular responses that allow mast cells to act as cellular sensors in tissues.

All recognized diseases of the lungs are discussed and illustrated with extensive, high-quality color images. Each chapter includes practical, clear and concise diagnostic features, including immunohistochemistry, molecular tests and differential diagnoses, while rare entities are discussed and illustrated in detail. This thoroughly reworked edition includes new classification schemes and the latest understanding of the pathophysiology and molecular aspects of a wide range of diseases. Non-neoplastic diseases are presented according to epidemiology, genetics, clinical manifestations, radiographic findings, pathology, cytology, laboratory findings, pathogenesis, differential diagnosis, prognosis and natural history. Neoplasms are discussed according to cell or origin with sections devoted to genetics, molecular findings and clinicopathologic correlations. Downloadable versions of all images are available on a CD-ROM packaged with the print book.
