Book Synopsis Styrene-butadiene Latex Modifiers for Bridge Deck Overlay Concrete by : Kenneth C. Clear
Download or read book Styrene-butadiene Latex Modifiers for Bridge Deck Overlay Concrete written by Kenneth C. Clear and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Styrene-butadiene (S/B) latex modified concrete overlays are being used to protect new bridge decks from rapid deicer-borne chloride intrusion and also in bridge deck rehabilitation efforts. The purposes of this research were to evaluate several commercially-available S/B latex modifiers for bridge deck overlay concrete; and to develop chemical specifications for the material, a prequalification program to permit evaluation of other S/B latex modifiers which become available, and a certification program to insure the user receives a prequalified product. The chemical and physical properties of the latex emulsions were studied (percent solids, percent butadiene, particle size, surface tension, viscosity, etc.) and the material from each manufacturer was finger printed using infrared spectroscopy. The physical properties of concrete made with each material were also determined (workability, strength-compressive, flexural and bond, freeze-thaw and scaling resistance, and chloride permeability).
Book Synopsis Premature Failure of Latex Modified Concrete Bridge Deck Overlays in Ohio by : Osama Ahmed Abdulshafi
Download or read book Premature Failure of Latex Modified Concrete Bridge Deck Overlays in Ohio written by Osama Ahmed Abdulshafi and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is an investigation of the cause(s) of premature failure of latex modified concrete (LMC) bridge deck overlays in Ohio. Data and materials for 93 bridge decks overlaid with LMC were collected from five Ohio Department of Transportation Districts. Additional materials were collected and evaluations were conducted through monitoring the construction of seven LMC bridge deck overlays. Overall documentation and evaluation of the overlays and materials obtained are discussed; this includes field survey activities, construction monitoring and laboratory testing and analysis. Characteristics of the LMC mixtures and materials are evaluated and compared to acceptable standards. General findings were that most of the problems were due to the underlying old deck which was contaminated with chloride ions, previously undetected due to insufficient testing. Other conclusions are presented separately under construction monitoring, field surveys, and laboratory testing and analysis.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers presented at IALCCE2018, the Sixth International Symposium on Life-Cycle Civil Engineering (IALCCE2018), held in Ghent, Belgium, October 28-31, 2018. It consists of a book of extended abstracts and a USB device with full papers including the Fazlur R. Khan lecture, 8 keynote lectures, and 390 technical papers from all over the world. Contributions relate to design, inspection, assessment, maintenance or optimization in the framework of life-cycle analysis of civil engineering structures and infrastructure systems. Life-cycle aspects that are developed and discussed range from structural safety and durability to sustainability, serviceability, robustness and resilience. Applications relate to buildings, bridges and viaducts, highways and runways, tunnels and underground structures, off-shore and marine structures, dams and hydraulic structures, prefabricated design, infrastructure systems, etc. During the IALCCE2018 conference a particular focus is put on the cross-fertilization between different sub-areas of expertise and the development of an overall vision for life-cycle analysis in civil engineering. The aim of the editors is to provide a valuable source of cutting edge information for anyone interested in life-cycle analysis and assessment in civil engineering, including researchers, practising engineers, consultants, contractors, decision makers and representatives from local authorities.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Polymer-Modified Concrete and Mortars by : Yoshihiko Ohama
Download or read book Handbook of Polymer-Modified Concrete and Mortars written by Yoshihiko Ohama and published by William Andrew. This book was released on 1995-12-31 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mortar and concrete made with portland cement has been a popular construction material in the world for the past 170 years or more. However, cement mortar and concrete have some disadvantages such as delayed hardening, low tensile strength, large drying shrinkage and low chemical resistance. To reduce these disadvantages, polymers have been utilized as an additive.Polymer-modified or polymer cement mortar (PCM) and concrete (PCC) are the materials which are made by partially replacing the cement hydrate binders of conventional cement mortar or concrete, with polymers. This book deals with the principles of polymer modification for cement composites, the process technology, properties and applications of the polymer-modified mortar and concrete, and special polymer-modified systems such as M DF cement, antiwashout underwater concrete, polymer-ferrocement, and artificial I wood. The polymeric admixtures or cement modifiers include latexes or emulsions, redispersible polymer powders, water-soluble polymers, liquid resins and monomers. This book describes the current knowledge and information of polymer-modified mortars and concretes, and discusses or reviews the following items in detail:1. Principles of polymer modification for cement composites.2. Process technology of polymer-modified mortars and concretes.3. Properties of polymer-modified mortars and concretes.4. Applications of polymer-modified mortars and concretes.5. Special polymer-modified systems such as MDF cements, antiwashout underwater concretes, polymer-ferrocements, and artificial woods.

Book Synopsis Concrete Admixtures Handbook by : V.S. Ramachandran
Download or read book Concrete Admixtures Handbook written by V.S. Ramachandran and published by William Andrew. This book was released on 1996-12-31 with total page 1183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of the first edition ten years ago, significant developments have occurred in the use of admixtures in concrete. Eight new chapters and a full update of the preceding ten chapters bring this book up to date; reflecting the relative advances made in the science and technology of different groups of admixtures. The increased role and development of admixtures in concrete technology is evidenced by a number of conferences, publications, and novel admixtures available in the market place. These developments in the field caused the modification of many chapters in the first edition in order to reflect the advances. Although individual chapters refer to standards and specifications of admixtures, those only interested in the standards or techniques used in investigating admixtures will find the second chapter (Research Technologies, Standards, and Specifications) useful. Admixtures are not as inert as may be presumed. They may chemically interact with the constituents of concrete and affect the properties of the fresh and hardened concrete and its durability. The third chapter deals with these aspects. It was important to devote a chapter to recent attempts in developing new admixtures.
