Book excerpt: In 1895, when tragedy strikes and the bank repossesses the Barrington sisters' home, all hope is lost--until an orange farmer in California secretly arranges for them to head out west to become mail order brides for his three sons. Will the Wallace brothers welcome the Barrington sisters with open arms? Find out in Brides Of Riverside, a historical mail order bride series by Faith-Ann Smith. Book 1: Mail Order Bride Willow: When the bank repossesses the house, Willow, the eldest of the clan--and a determined spinster--tries to be optimistic but begins to lose faith when their situation takes a turn for the worse. When her cousin from California offers to make an arrangement for her to marry the son of a man out west, Willow has no choice and accepts. When she meets Joshua Wallace, however, she decides that he is unsuitable and their personalities clash. Joshua comes from a prominent family in Riverside, but prefers to live as a recluse on the wide open plains. He has a wolf for company and has taken five orphans from a nearby reservation under his care. Can they both find a way to live in peace and keep their sanity intact? Book 2: Mail Order Bride Lily: Lily is a soft-spoken girl with a large heart. When she receives her invitation to travel to California, she is eager to go, despite her fears. She quickly falls for her betrothed, Jasper Wallace, but her love is unrequited. When his father asks him to make Lily his bride, Jasper plans to get out of the engagement as soon as he can, but Lily's heartfelt personality soon begins to intrigue him; not even the vibrant Daisy May Meriwether can keep him away. When Lily is bitten by a snake, Jasper is terrified of losing her and vows to become a better man. Will his prayers be heard in time, or will he tragically lose the woman of his dreams? Book 3: Mail Order Bride Rose: When kind-spirited Rose is asked to travel to Riverside and become the bride of Joseph Wallace, she is eager to accept. She admires Joseph from the moment they meet, but she can tell that the feeling is not mutual. Joseph is emotionally scarred from a broken heart. He now feels that all women can't be trusted, so when he meets Rose, he devises a plan: to ask for her help in opening a new restaurant, and then to dismiss her after its grand opening, never looking back. Little does he know, however, that Rose's kindness and love will threaten to destroy the very fabric of Joseph's deep-seated beliefs. Can he get over his prejudice and finally learn to love again, or is heart too wounded to heal?

Book excerpt: This book argues that the inscription found in the now extinct Babri masjid should be named as Visnu-hare instead of Visnu-hari since this title does not refer to any god but to the three Gahadavala rajas who had it made. It also challenges that the Sanskrit phrase janma bhumi which sparked the Ram debate around the inscription means birth place suggesting that in this language jan means folk rather, referring to Ayodhya as land of folk. The Gahadavala temple there had been renovated from an earlier Chola temple at the spot. It was dedicated to goddess Sri Sundara Amman, the Telugu Jaina goddess of beauty & art and devadasi cult. Further it proposes that the Gahadavala kings during the time of the inscription circa lOth century CE had become intermarried for three generations into the Ghaznavid and Suri-Shahi families who ruled Samarkhand and the Sindh provinces and formed an international elite. The Babri masjid dedicated to sambo shankara and a whole series of masjid- temple complexes at Kashi, Mathura, Prabhasa and elsewhere were the outcome of these interfaith marriages. During the time of the Gahadavala heir Vallabha, who took the title Prithviraj Chauhan Karpura and who had married none other than Padmavati the princess of Sri Lanka, the temples must have become extinct due to Bhakti ages' sectarian politics on the Hindu side, as all these temples had been dedicated to devadasi practice.

Book excerpt: "In prose as painterly and evocative as Chagall's own dazzling brushstrokes, Gloria Goldreich finely evokes one of the most significant masters of modern art through the discerning eyes of [his] loyally protective daughter."—Cynthia Ozick, award-winning author of Foreign Bodies Beautiful Ida Chagall, the only daughter of Marc Chagall, is blossoming in the Paris art world beyond her father's controlling gaze. But her newfound independence is short-lived. In Nazi-occupied Paris, Chagall's status as a Jewish artist has made them all targets, yet his devotion to his art blinds him to their danger. When Ida falls in love and Chagall angrily paints an empty wedding chair (The Bridal Chair) in response, she faces an impossible choice: Does she fight to forge her own path outside her father's shadow, or abandon her ambitions to save Chagall from his enemies and himself? Brimming with historic personalities from Europe, America and Israel, The Bridal Chair is a stunning portrait of love, fortitude, and the sharp divide between art and real life. "Only Gloria Goldreich could write a novel so grounded in historical truths yet so exuberantly imaginative. The Bridal Chair is Goldreich at her best, with a mesmerizing plot, elegant images, and a remarkable heroine who...will remain with you long after the last page."—Francine Klagsburn, Jewish Week columnist and acclaimed author of Voices of Wisdom

Book excerpt: The Bridal Biz not only triples the price of wedding services, it literally takes the wedding away from the bride and makes it an impersonal, secular event that is all they know and treats your wedding like a Ken and Barbie runway at a fashion show, based on Hollywood movies and silly TV shows. It's Your Wedding Not Theirs is a comprehensive, creative guide to help you plan a distinctively unique, personal and sacred celebration. If you want a Martha Stewart wedding, do not buy this book. With photos and suggestions from 55 brides, this book offers dozens of tips on how to make your celebration a memorable experience, not just an expensive event. This simple, 65 page guide book will walk you through 40 plus chapters, including your goal, your attitude, your groom, your mother, your focus or theme, your family, your budget, your guest list, your location, your celebrant, your wardrobe, your rings, your vendors, your ceremony, your legal requirements, your program, your rehearsal and dinner, your ceremony and reception, your honeymoon, and your marriage. With very practical tips on every aspect of your wedding weekend from welcome to readings and love letters to vows and symbols of unity to cultural customs, favors, toasts and cake this book shows you how to present yourselves as hosts rather than self-conscious stars and how to move from a costly, cookie cutter party to a sacred, fun, mature, memorable celebration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though most Shakespearean scholars argue that Pericles is not entirely the work of Shakespeare, similar to The Winters Tale, it continues to attract playgoers. Shipwreck, famine, and other disasters punctuate this wondrous tale, in which a knight in rusty armor fights for his true love and a princess kidnaped by pirates retains her honor by setting a virtuous example for her captors (Daurio, cover). The play is a true romance, or as Joseph Papp states, it is a fairy tale about a separated familys coming back together again. (Quoted in Bevington). Papp also reminds perceptive readers or audience members to look for little bits of wisdom along the way; such is true of the entirety of the Shakespeare canon.
