Book excerpt: Written in 1802–03, The Natural Daughter and The Bride of Messina show Goethe and Schiller writing in a neo-classical manner far removed from the Sturm und Drang style of their early works. The plays reflect their authors’ reaction to the troubled post-Revolutionary years of their composition — a counter-Revolutionary one, both in an aesthetic and at least implicitly political sense. Their eponymous heroines embody hopes of restored familial harmony and political order, yet in both plays those hopes are tragically frustrated. Goethe’s Eugenia, natural daughter of the Duke, is abducted and threatened with exile by a political conspiracy, and must renounce her aristocratic aspirations. Reduced to bourgeois anonymity, she hopes nevertheless one day to re-emerge and serve King and country, but the ending of the play is at best ambiguous. Schiller’s Beatrice is loved by both Manuel and Cesar, brothers whose mutual hatred has plunged Messina into civil strife. Deception, misunderstanding, and a terrible secret weave a fatal web, whose unravelling leaves both brothers dead and Messina rulerless to face an uncertain future.

Book excerpt: This volume sets out a novel approach to theatre historiography, presenting the history of performances of Greek tragedies in Germany since 1800 as the history of the evolving cultural identity of the educated middle class throughout that period. Philhellenism and theatromania took hold in this milieu amidst attempts to banish the heavily French-influenced German court culture of the mid-eighteenth century, and by 1800 their fusion in performances of Greek tragedies served as the German answer to the French Revolution. Tragedy's subsequent endurance on the German stage is mapped here through the responses of performances to particular political, social, and cultural milestones, from the Napoleonic Wars and the Revolution of 1848 to the Third Reich, the new political movements of the 1960s and 1970s, and the fall of the Berlin Wall and reunification. Images of ancient Greece which were prevalent in the productions of these different eras are examined closely: the Nazi's proclamation of a racial kinship between the Greeks and the Germans; the politicization of performances of Greek tragedies since the 1960s and 1970s, emblematized by Marcuse's notion of a cultural revolution; the protest choruses of the GDR and the new genre of choric theatre in the 1980s and 1990s. By examining these images and performances in relation to their respective socio-cultural contexts, the volume sheds light on how, in a constantly changing political and cultural climate, performances of Greek tragedies helped affirm, destabilize, re-stabilize, and transform the cultural identity of the educated middle class over a volatile two hundred year period.

Book excerpt: This book explores how the Enlightenment aesthetics of theater as a moral institution influenced cultural politics and operatic developments in Vienna between the mid-eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Moralistic viewpoints were particularly important in eighteenth-century debates about German national theater. In Vienna, the idea that vernacular theater should cultivate the moral sensibilities of its German-speaking audiences became prominent during the reign of Empress Maria Theresa, when advocates of German plays and operas attempted to deflect the imperial government from supporting exclusively French and Italian theatrical performances. Morality continued to be a dominant aspect of Viennese operatic culture in the following decades, as critics, state officials, librettists, and composers (including Gluck, Mozart, and Beethoven) attempted to establish and define German national opera. Viennese concepts of operatic didacticism and national identity in theater further transformed in response to the crisis of Emperor Joseph II’s reform movement, the revolutionary ideas spreading from France, and the war efforts in facing Napoleonic aggression. The imperial government promoted good morals in theatrical performances through the institution of theater censorship, and German-opera authors cultivated intensely didactic works (such as Die Zauberflöte and Fidelio) that eventually became the cornerstones for later developments of German culture.
