The Bermuda was not carrier-capable, although it was designed as a dive bomber. It was developed by Brewster in parallel with the Curtiss SB2C Helldiver. The two aircraft looked similar. Handling and production problems caused two years of delay, and the US Navy had no need for a new dive bomber when the SB2A was finally available. Many were used as target tugs, others were scrapped straight from the production line. A total of 1052 were built. The Bermuda was supplied for FAA (Fleet Air Arm is the branch of the Royal Navy) assessment under lend-lease when a small number entered RAF service. Also includes coverage of the XSBA-1 and SBN-1.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Crooked Billet Inn, although no longer standing, remains one of the most recognizable and well-loved spots in Hatboro. It was there where one of Hatboros founders, John Dawson, operated an inn and eatery, and where George Washington ate and slept during his pursuit of the British Army during the Revolutionary War. It is because of the popularity of the Crooked Billet Inn that Hatboro was often known simply as The Billet. There is no confusing Hatboro for anywhere else, since it is the only town with that name in the United States. First settled in the early 1700s, Hatboro grew to become an industrial and educational giant. Hatboro includes, among many others, exceptional images of the former Loller Academy, which helped Hatboro become an educational center in an otherwise rural area. Also highlighted are the Brewster Aviation Company, and the equipment Brewster manufactured for the military during World War II. Of course, the Crooked Billet Inn and the Battle of Crooked Billet, Willow Grove Park, and the music of John Philip Sousa and Victor Herbert are revisited in these pages, as well as some lesser-known stories, like those of the horrors of having two competing phone companies, and the story of Matilda.

Book excerpt: This aviation handbook is designed to be used as a quick reference to the classic military heritage aircraft that have been restored and preserved in the state of Florida. The aircraft include those fl own by members of the United States Air Force, the United States Navy, the United States Army, the United States Marine Corps, the United States Coast Guard, the Air and Army National Guard, and by various NATO and allied nations as well as a number previously operated by opposition forces in peace and war. The interested reader will find useful information and a few technical details on most of the military aircraft that have been in service with active flying squadrons both at home and overseas. 160 selected photographs have been included to illustrate a few of the major examples in addition to the serial numbers assigned to American military aircraft. For those who like to actually see the aircraft concerned, aviation museum locations, addresses and contact phone numbers have been included, along with a list of aircraft held in each museums current inventory or on display as gate guardians throughout the State of Florida. The aircraft presented in this edition are listed alphabetically by manufacturer, number and type. Although many of Floridas heritage warplanes have completely disappeared, a few have been carefully collected, restored and preserved, and some have even been restored to flying condition. This guide-book should help you to find and view Floridas Warplane survivors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a concise historical survey of the various types of aircraft used by the United States Army Air Corps, Army Air Forces, and Air Force, and the Navy and Marine Corps to accomplish air attack missions since 1926. The text covers four types of fixed-wing aircraft: designated attack aircraft; light, medium, and tactical bombers; fighter-bombers; and adapted attack aircraft. Reports on individual aircraft types include the aircraft's original military requirements, production history, and operational record, usually accompanied by photographs, illustrations, and technical specifications. Four appendices detail aircraft designations and nomenclature used throughout the military, the organizational structure of various military air units, aircraft designs that never made it into official service, and the evolution of attack aircraft weapons and tactics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within six months of the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Navy had checked the Japanese military advance in the Pacific to the extent that the United States could return to its original "Defeat Germany First" strategy. That the Navy was able to accomplish this feat with only six fleet aircraft carriers and little more than 1,000 combat aircraft was not sheer luck but the culmination of more than two decades of determined preparation. This thorough study, with detailed drawings and photographs, explains and illustrates the trial and error process which went into developing the aircraft, airships and ships of the interwar period. The critical factors that shaped Naval Aviation after World War I--naval treaties, fleet tactics, government programs, leadership and organization, as well as the emergence of Marine Corps and Coast Guard aviation--are discussed in depth.
