Download or read book Santa Bárbara’s Legacy written by Nicholas A. Robins and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-04-24 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Santa Bárbara’s Legacy: An Environmental History of Huancavelica, Peru, Nicholas A. Robins presents the first comprehensive environmental history of a mercury producing region in Latin America. Tracing the origins, rise and decline of the regional population and economy from pre-history to the present, Robins explores how people’s multifaceted, intimate and often toxic relationship with their environment has resulted in Huancavelica being among the most mercury-contaminated urban areas on earth. The narrative highlights issues of environmental justice and the toxic burdens that contemporary residents confront, especially many of those who live in adobe homes and are exposed to mercury, as well as lead and arsenic, on a daily basis. The work incorporates archival and printed primary sources as well as scientific research led by the author.

Book Synopsis Foundational missionaries of south american adventism by : Daniel Plenc
Download or read book Foundational missionaries of south american adventism written by Daniel Plenc and published by Editorial de la Universidad Adventista del Plata. This book was released on 2020-11-16 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There was no academic book presenting the biographies of the pioneers of South American Adventism. There were just short devotional works about the experiences of one or more Adventist missionaries. This book showcases the life and work of those who established the Seventh-day Adventist Church in South America. It is a text prepared with historical rigour, true to available sources, spreads the work of Adventist missionaries in these lands and promotes the fulfillment of evangelical mission in present day. However, its contents are presented in an enjoyable and inspiring way. This work contains the biographies of twelve of the foundational missionaries of South American Adventism. The areas in which they contributed to mission are diverse: evangelization, administration, medical work, publishing ministry, educational work and social service. All of them, men and women, adult and young, owning big ideals and a spirit of sacrifice that invite emulation.
Book Synopsis The Ecotourism-Extraction Nexus by : Bram Büscher
Download or read book The Ecotourism-Extraction Nexus written by Bram Büscher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecotourism and natural resource extraction may be seen as contradictory pursuits, yet in reality they often take place side by side, sometimes even supported by the same institutions. Existing academic and policy literatures generally overlook the phenomenon of ecotourism in areas concurrently affected by extraction industries, but such a scenario is in fact increasingly common in resource-rich developing nations. This edited volume conceptualises and empirically analyses the ‘ecotourism-extraction nexus’ within the context of broader rural and livelihood changes in the places where these activities occur. The volume’s central premise is that these seemingly contradictory activities are empirically and conceptually more alike than often imagined, and that they share common ground in ethnographic lived experiences in rural settings and broader political economic structures of power and control. The book offers theoretical reflections on why ecotourism and natural resource extraction are systematically decoupled, and epistemologically and analytically re-links them through ethnographic case studies drawing on research from around the world. It should be of interest to students and professionals engaged in the disciplines of geography, anthropology and development studies.
