Book Synopsis Hortense Allart by : Helynne Hollstein Hansen
Download or read book Hortense Allart written by Helynne Hollstein Hansen and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1998 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hortense Allart provides a biography of the French feminist and Romantic writer from the nineteenth century. Allart was a close friend and correspondent of several well-known writers of her time, including Chateaubriand, Sainte-Beuve, Béranger, George Sand, and Marie d'Agoult, and was a first cousin of the poet Sophie Gay de Girardin. In addition to her novels, political and religious essays, and historical writings, her most famous essay Le Femme et la Democratie de Nos Temps makes her stand out in her own time, and serves as a significant precursor to the twentieth century feminist literary movement. The author intermingles biographical information with analyses of her ten novels and her chief essay, and analyzes in modern feminist critical terms how Allart prefigured the reach for a gynocentric language that is the focus of contemporary women's writing, using the original French to quote Allart's works.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: After a storm on the North Sea in 1991, the peace of a routine spring morning is shattered when a secret German World War II chemical weapon washes up on the shore of a small Scottish fishing village, killing scores of inhabitants in a gruesome, painful manner. Retired U.S. Navy Bomb Disposal technician Mack Turner and his newly organized GREEN Team are dispatched to discover the cause of this mass murder and remove the threat before it can create additional destruction. While in Scotland, the team discovers the depth of the German plot and the imminent threat to New York City. Before they can mitigate the situation in Scotland and return to the United States to stop another disaster, a dangerous man from Mack's past hijacks the chemical weapon from its resting place in the United States to use in his own twisted plot of revenge. In a heart-pounding race against time, the GREEN Team must utilize all their resources to outthink the chemical terrorist and deal with his dangerous physical and psychological impediments. Can they stop the madman in time, or do the citizens of New York City face certain death?
Download or read book Avant Garde written by Robin Maconie and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gertrude Stein and philosopher Alfred North Whitehead were unlikely friends who spent most of their mature lives in exile: Stein in France and Whitehead in the United States. Their friendship was based on a mutual admiration for the philosophical pragmatism of William James and skepticism toward the European tradition of intellectual abstraction extending as far back as Plato and Aristotle. Though neither was musical, both were leading exponents of a new orientation toward time and knowledge acquisition that would go on to influence succeeding generations of composers. Through Virgil Thomson, Stein came to influence John Cage and the New York school of abstract music; through his teaching in the United States, Whitehead’s philosophy of time and cognition came to be seen in America and abroad as an alternative to Newtonian neoclassicism, an alternative clearly acknowledged in the metric modulations of Elliott Carter and Conlon Nancarrow as well as the post-1950 total serialism of Pierre Boulez and Karlheinz Stockhausen. The seemingly unlikely influence of Stein and Whitehead on Thomson, Cage, Carter, and the minimalists tells a remarkable story of transmission within and among the arts and philosophy, one that Robin Maconie unravels through his series of essays in Avant Garde: An American Odyssey from Gertrude Stein to Pierre Boulez. Maconie explores, from Hollywood to Harvard, the way in which music functions as a form of communication across the boundaries of language, serving the causes of trade and diplomacy through its representation of national identity, emotional character, honorable intention, and social discipline. The study of music as a language inevitably became the object of information science after World War II, but, as Maconie notes, 60 years on, music’s refusal to yield to scientific elucidation has generated a stream of anti-music propaganda by a powerful collective of celebrity science writers. In a sequence of linked essays, Stockhausen specialist Robin Maconie reconsiders the role of music and music technology through careful examination of key modern concepts with respect to time, existence, identity, and relationship as formulated by such thinkers as Einstein, Russell, Whitehead, and Stein, along with Freud, Schoenberg, Wittgenstein, and Marcel Duchamp. This foray into art, music, science, and philosophy is ideally suited for students and scholars of these disciplines, as well as those seeking to understand more deeply the influence these individuals had on one another’s work and modern music.

Book Synopsis The Working Class in American Literature by : John F. Lavelle
Download or read book The Working Class in American Literature written by John F. Lavelle and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literary texts are artifacts of their time and ideologies. This book collection explores the working class in American literature from the colonial to the contemporary period through a critical lens which addresses the real problems of approaching class through economics. Significantly, this book moves the analysis of working-class literature away from the Marxist focus on the relationship between class and the means of production and applies an innovative concept of class based on the sociological studies of humans and society first championed by Max Weber. Of primary concern is the construction of class separation through the concept of in-grouping/out grouping. This book builds upon the theories established in John F. Lavelle's Blue Collar, Theoretically: A Post-Marxist Approach to Working Class Literature (McFarland, 2011) and puts them into practice by examining a diverse set of texts that reveal the complexity of class relations in American society.
