Book excerpt: Excerpt from Improving Egg Production by Breeding It is safe to say that never has there been so keen and wide spread an interest in the improvement of poultry in respect to egg production as exists at the present time. All over the world poultry keepers are waking to the fact that some hens lay more than others; that it costs no more to hatch, rear and care for those which lay more; and that they want this sort in their flocks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Call of the Hen: Or the Science of the Selecting and Breeding Poultry for Egg-Production It was also tested'in New Zealand' by D. D. Hyde, Chief poultry expert for the New Zealand Government, and Prof. Brown, of the New Zealand Poultry Experiment Station. I have repeatedly been requested by my friends in different parts of the world to publish the full matter in book form, but poor health and lack of sufficient funds have prevented me from doing so until now. As this work will be copyrighted, I do not anticipate the literary pirates will raid_it as they have my former work. In justice to the poultry fraternity, I want to say that while I have been and am now a member of the American Poultry Association, and have raised poultry fifty-six years, and now raise them by the thousand, I have never in the past classed myself as a poultryman in the strict sense of the word. Neither do I claim that I am the only one who has discovered the facts set forth in this book. I Only know that I have never seen them in print before. I know what the results of fol lowing this method have been with me, and I feel safe in assuming that the things I have discovered have not been known. Hundreds have known me as an inventor and woolen manufacturer where one would know me as a poultry crank; and the only apology I have for offering this book to the pub lic in a field already crowded with poultry literature is the earnest solicitation of my friends. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fundamentals in Poultry Breeding: A Complete Guide to the Successful Breeding of American Standard Fowls, Turkeys, Ducks and Geese for Table Poultry, for Egg Production, and for Exhibition One of the greatest fallacies entertained by those not versed in matters relating to breeding 'is the 'idea that expert breeders have an interest in keeping their methods from the public. The only ground for that suspicion is the fact that, until the poultry public generally had an understanding of breeding that removed their prejudice against inbreeding, it was not good business policy for breeders of high-class stock to let it be generally known how closely their lines were bred. With better general understanding on this point, expert breeders not only have no interest in keeping anything about their methods to themselves, but it is to their advantage that those who buy their stock should know how to breed it right. Book excerpt: Where other chicken breeders failed, Professor James Dryden in Oregon succeeded when "Lady MacDuff" laid 303 eggs in 365 days in 1912-1913. How did he do it? Through the methods described in this book, which can be divided into two parts: his successful breeding techniques and his simple yet effective management techniques. Poultry Breeding and Management, first published a century ago, was an immediate hit with farmers and breeders alike, and remained in print for nearly thirty years. It was the best, most popular, and most influential poultry book of its time, and remains well worth reading today. James Dryden (1863-1935) was Professor of Poultry Science at Oregon Agricultural College (now Oregon State University) and was the first to demonstrate that egg production can be in-creased through selective breeding. He is the only poultryman ever inducted into National Agricultural Hall of Fame. Poultry Breeding and Genetics is volume 6 of the Norton Creek Classics series. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poultry Breeding and Management The remarkable development of poultry culture during the past two decades is one of the outstanding features of American agriculture. Twenty years ago the possibilities of poultry-keeping as an industry were scarcely dreamed of. While it does not yet receive the consideration it deserves - far from it - nevertheless it has made immense gains both in popular recognition and in production. This has been brought about by a better realization of the pro ductive value of the hen. The idea of fuss and feathers, long associated with the keeping of fowls, has gradually given way to the idea of a poultry industry whose first and only business, as an industry, is the production of eggs and meat. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mating and Breeding of Poultry To the man or woman who desires some occupation or activity for a few spare hours as a relief from the fatigue, the strain and the routine of the regular day's work, poultry breeding, whether for the production of exhibition stock or of stock with heavy egg producing ability, is ideal. An intimate understanding of the laws or principles of breeding as well as of their application is necessary for success and poultry breeding is therefore an occupation which demands deep and discriminating thought and whose complex problems are at once a challenge and a stimulation to the intelligence of the breeder as well as being of absorbing interest. Moreover, the poultry breeder finds opportunity for the expression of his artistic instincts in molding the form or shape of the birds and the color or combination of colors to meet his ideal. In addition, there is the gratification of the sporting instinct, the pleasurable excitement of competition in exhibiting the choicest specimens at the shows and the satisfaction which comes from a win in the realization that the breeder has surpassed the efforts of his competitors and produced birds superior to theirs. Let no one to whom poultry breeding appeals hesitate to engage in it on the ground that he has not the room or facilities to enable him to compete with others more favorably situated. With only a back yard or village lot, and with the crudest equipment, it is possible to produce fowls of the highest excellence. Many winning birds in the leading exhibitions are produced by men and women who breed on a very limited scale without farms available for their poultry operations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Egg Farming Ery few fortunes are made from poultry, but thousands of newcomers since the War are making a good living from egg production. It would be useless to deny that there have lately been failures in the business but that is because so many quite inexperienced men, in every way unsuited to a country life, took up poultry farming after they were demobilised. There was a big poultry boom then, and, now that the least capable of the post-war egg-farmers have found their inflated expectations without foundation and retired from the business in disgust, the reaction has set up a certain amount of depression in the poultry world. We are now back to something approaching pre-war conditions, and, in spite of the many poultry farms in the market, there is still ample margin of profit from egg production. The present time is, in my opinion, a much more opportune time to make a start than has occurred during the last six years or more. Values are now right down and there is no fear of the heavy capital deprecia tion which all who built their farms within a year or two of the Armistice have sufiered. There are plenty of poultry farms to be had at reasonable prices now the boom is over and the prospects for the future have never been rosier than they. Now are. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Poultry Husbandry, Vol. 1: Housing Equipments; Appliances; Breeds and Varieties; Mating and Breeding; Culling; Selection and Breeding for Egg Production The more nearly "fool-proof" a poultry house can be made, just that much more certain will the average person be of succeeding in the production of poultry and eggs at a profit. By fool-proofness we simply mean that the house, its ventilators and windows need but little adjustment, being always ready for use. The interior of the house is protected from rain, drafts and storms. As someone has well said: "The shutter ventilator is to the hen house what the 'block system' of signals is to the railroad - it does not depend on the falibility of human memory, adjustment or correct use; it is always in place and in working order, no matter what the weather may be." The facts which are contained herein, and the houses which are herein illustrated are the results of the experimental work with poultry housing problems which I did at the Missouri State Poultry Experiment Station. I have made certain alterations in this lesson and improved the house where I thought necessary. I originated this idea for ventilating a poultry house. Much of the loss and many of the ills and disappointments met with in poultry raising can be traced directly to nonsensically-designed, poorly constructed, badly-ventilated, inconveniently-arranged and improperly-located poultry houses. A poultry house need not be elaborate or expensive. The Quisenberry "fool-proof" poultry house can be easily and economically built. It was designed with a view of economy, simplicity, comfortableness, convenience, dryness, cheerfulness, sanitation, and of having the proper amount of ventilation and sunshine. It was designed with a view of having all these virtues in one house and at the same time avoid having a lot of curtains to raise and lower, and is free from many of the freak notions and ideas embodied in many modern poultry houses which make it necessary for the farmer or poultryman to be continually raising and lowering curtains, opening and closing ventilators and doing many other things which the average farmer or poultryman will not take the time to do, and therefore do not get the best results. The attention to details is all eliminated in the Quisenberry "fool-proof" poultry house. We unhesitatingly recommend it to the farmer, the city back-lot poultry-raiser, the commercial egg farmer and all others desiring the most up-todate and satisfactory poultry house in existence. Before attempting to build a poultry-house, first consider the purpose for which the house is intended and the size of the flock it is to accommodate. Is it to house a pen of breeders, is it to be used as a colony house, or is it intended as a sort of general purpose house or a laying house? Consider these facts, then build the style and size of house which comes nearest filling your requirements. This book describes and contains plans in detail for the colony house, the breeding house and the laying house, all similar in most respects - varying only in size and interior arrangements. Judging from appearance, as a rule, any old shack is a perfectly satisfactory home for the hens. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Profitable Poultry Production Poultry production is commonly practiced on every farm, but profitable poultry production so far as the farm is concerned, is rare indeed. No one, as a rule, has better natural conditions for poultry raising than has the farmer. It is only a matter of embracing opportunities that is wanting. This book. Profitable Poultry Production, is written to present the case fairly and squarely so the farmer may see the advantages that poultry offers as a means of making money. The book lays special emphasis upon all the important practices and new wrinkles that have been found profitable by professional breeders and poultry-men. It shows how these can be easily applied by any one and what may be expected in the way of results. From cover to cover it is intended as an encouragement and a stimulus to everyone interested in poultry. Not only does it indicate which are the lines likely to be most profitable, but it points out those branches of the business not likely to be remunerative, except under special conditions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultryman's Handbook: A Convenient Reference Book for All Persons Interested in the Production of Eggs and Poultry for Marketing and the Breeding of Standard-Bred, Poultry for Exhibition This handbook is intended as a book of reference for poultrymen generally. The publishers have not attempted to produce a condensed cyclopedia covering the broad field of poultry husbandry, but they have aimed to present to the public a handy reference book convenient to carry in the pocket - a pocketbook in reality - and containing such information as is most often needed by poultrymen who handle fowls commercially in large numbers, by persons who keep a few fowls in the back yard, and by breeders who aim to produce poultry of the best quality for exhibition. Although the treatment of some subjects is of necessity brief, it has been the aim so to distribute the space available that it would cover the more important subjects as fully as possible. The more important poultry foods are briefly described and discussed, and sample rations are given for the feeding of fowls, chicks, turkeys, guinea fowls, pheasants, ducks, geese, pigeons, etc. Much useful information in regard to incubation and brooding is given.
