Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named by mindbodygreen as one of the best health and wellness books for 2022 From our first breath to our last, we spend our entire lives in a perpetual cycle of inhalations and exhalations. Yet few of us are taught how to breathe, why we breathe, or the ways in which the breath influences us emotionally, energetically, physically, and spiritually. The Illuminated Breath is a revolutionary manual on unlocking the power of the breath. With humor, clarity, and an appreciation for the art of storytelling, revered yoga practitioner Dylan Werner delves into the rich histories of breathing techniques and breath work, while validating these practices with a strong lean toward physiology and science. Using enlightening, practical examples from everyday life, Werner explains how energy flows through the body and how the breath can be used to regulate and control that flow. He walks readers through pranayama, the ancient yogic practice of breath control, and explains the four components of the breath cycle. He then introduces pranayama practices, which can be used on their own or combined into sequences to achieve specific goals. The final part of this book leads readers through a series of targeted breath sequences that are designed to boost athletic performance and recovery, improve sleep, enhance cognitive function, relieve anxiety, promote deep relaxation, and more. Each sequence is customizable and can be modified or used in combination with other sequences to create a personalized breath plan. Embark on a life-changing journey as you learn how to breathe optimally and bring balance to your life, one inhalation and exhalation at a time.

Each chapter includes a discussion about how the particular issue applies to mums, a questionnaire so you can identify which are particularly relevant to you, some suggested points for reflection, guidance from the Kundalini Yoga tradition (including Top Tips such as dietary suggestions), a breathing practice, a physical Yoga set and a meditation. The book is fully illustrated, with easy-to-understand instructions so that you can practise at home. You do not need any previous experience, or to be particularly flexible or physically fit in order to practise these sets. Kundalini Yoga is a comprehensive form of Yoga that uses the breath, sound (mantra), postures and meditation. It is an ancient tradition which can empower you to meet the challenges of modern life with grace and equanimity. Unlike other forms of Yoga which were originally practiced in isolation, Kundalini Yoga has always been a householder's yoga, designed for people with the commitments of family and work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Supplement" transmitted as the second book of "On the Soul" by Alexander of Aphrodisias (fl. c. 200 AD) is a collection of short texts on a wide range of topics from psychology, including the general hylomorphic account of soul and its faculties, and the theory of vision; questions in ethics (natural instincts, the unity of the virtues, the naturalness of justice and the insufficiency of virtue for happiness); and issues relating to responsibility, chance and fate. One of the texts in the collection, "On Intellect", had a major influence on medieval Arabic and Western thought, greater than that of Alexander's "On the Soul" itself. The treatises may all be by Alexander himself; certainly the majority of them are closely connected with his other works. Many of them, however, consist of collections of arguments on particular issues, collections which probably incorporate material from earlier in the history of the Peripatetic school. This translation is from a new edition of the Greek text based on a collation of all known manuscripts and comparison with medieval Arabic and Latin translations.

Book excerpt: Organized around "The Canticle of the Creatures" by St. Francis of Assisi, Water, Wind, Earth, and Fire is the first book to consider the ways in which praying with the natural elements can enliven Christian spiritual life. Teacher, artist, and Benedictine oblate Christine Valters Paintner offers concrete suggestions and guided contemplative exercises; for instance, she suggests that readers take time to "watch the sunrise or sunset and breathe in the beauty of the fiery sky. Contemplate what those beginnings and endings have to say in your own life." Readers benefit from Paintner's extensive training in theology and Benedictine spirituality, as well as her unique work in bringing the expressive arts to spiritual direction.

Book excerpt: Teacher Mr Bernard Boyle (aka Bernard0 B0ilinni Ringhi0 di R0ssi of the Orb Zeronia) was almost out of breath, but never of magical Boyle-Breaths - good and bad! (‘BOYLE-BREATH’ - Bk1). Bernard had just been made Acting Head at Roquefort High School, and Bernard0 had saved a teenage school suicide ‘jumper’ off Roquefort’s infamous ‘3Rs’ bridge, its Rogue-Rapids Roadbridge; but at the action-packed end of Bernard’s first term as a Depute Head (‘BOYLE-BREATH BREATHES’ - Bk2) the High’s Mr Damien Mortenson had resigned. Aaron Brown somehow had survived; but Damien had had enough, especially his having found out that school bully-chief Nikki Dedson’s evil-mentor Cameron Mitchell was his own (previously sent for adoption) son! Quite why Dedson’s helper-in-chief Aaron Brown had tried to kill himself was a secret known only to the Bernards and the boy himself. A new school term beckoned, so schoolchildren and their families did too (indeed Boyle’s half-Zero children Rino and Zea were now both 13 – younger Zero girls catching up with ‘0’ brothers in actual human age as well as the usual intelligence and behaviour). Bullying was continuing also; séances, ghosts and vampires, dream-haunting and clinical depression – but murder? Social Workers, they’re always about somewhere, always for the best yeah? Immigrants and gypsies, angels and devils, tattooists and em referees? IEDs...! (But what if that Time-shifting sniper Mortenson had been able to pull the trigger on Lady Di...; what if the Confederates won the American Civil War...would Abraham Lincoln have become a Vampire Slayer? That ‘Butterfly Effect’ theory, Ray, does it hold truth? Really, really?) Father Stephen O’Reilly, what of him...a Time-travelling priest? Bless me Father!! Remember HIM &HER? Mm well of course you do! What if Richard and Faith decided to get married and tell everyone everything in the end?! Nikki Dedson: the Bully extraordinaire? Yes, he’s still alive, but he’s in two worlds now. Is he still a bully? Of course he is, and in both! Boyle-Breath is a stinker, but with all those earthly pongs and perfumes at his beck and call he could, he had, and he would continue to help change noses, minds, lives, worlds! What was Mr Boyle to do first though? How was his Zeronian ‘half’ Bernard0 to help? Where was a question: Earth &/or Zeronia? When was the subsequent problem...the Past, the Present; the Future?? They’d begin...at the End. “Boyle-Breath Breathes” – ‘BREATHTAKING!’ The Zeronian Bugle.

Book excerpt: Breath of Lifetells the story of a volunteer ?re?ghter’s life as an EMT and a ?re?ghter. Author Daniel McVey chronicles the harrowing stories of saving lives and facing death on a daily basis; he also shares stories of the dedication and professionalism of his comrades. He describes the small village on Long Island called Floral Park, where he belonged to the Rescue Company of the Floral Park Fire Department. While they were primarily responsible for medical emergencies; the stories included in Breath of Life provide an intimate view of the dangers these heroes faced as volunteers who also had full-time jobs. Growing up in Floral Park, McVey set his sights on becoming a volunteer ?re?ghter after taking a CPR course taught by three members of the Rescue Company. From that point on, his stories give a realistic picture of the stresses of emergency care for life-threatening emergencies. Covering the period from the mid to late 1980s into the 1990s, McVey chronicles how the morale of the Rescue Company had many ups and downs and how several members brought the company back together again. In July of 1999, he responded to his last call, thus ending an exciting time as a volunteer ?re?ghter.
