Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Lord Jesus, I can't do this without you." This is the essence of my life, and it became really evident to me after I heard the words, "You have cancer." I am a Christian woman who prays. I have spent years writing down my prayers in journals. I didn't decide to write this book; the Lord impressed upon me that I was going to write about this journey from the beginning when everything began to happen. That was probably so I'd chronicle what was happening in my journals. This book is the result of what transpired during the first couple of years after discovering I had a lump in my breast. Fighting cancer changed me. I learned to fight for my life. Losing meant death, so every day I had to stand in that place of faith. I found ways that worked for me to reinforce my faith and belief that God would heal me. Repeating the words, I am alive, full of vitality, and victorious, was one of the ways I stood in faith to believe I'd survive. I prayed for great faith because I had doubts, Jesus said believe and do not doubt; every doubt was an attack against me. I had other people praying for me so that my faith level would increase. I fought every day to live and did whatever was necessary to insure I'd survive. I did not put my faith in doctors or chemotherapy or radiation. I put my faith in God. The doctors and radiation treatments gave me hope that I'd get better, but I wanted to be healed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian theology at its core is a story about someone being in trouble. In response to this trouble, the triune God intervenes. God identifies with those in trouble, walking with them through the experience. Yet, the God of Christian theology goes a step further. God prevails over trouble. God is an overcomer. Black women with breast cancer identify with this God. They also see themselves in this theological narrative. They see themselves in the midst of troubles, troubles like racism, poverty and environmental exposures that create the disease affecting their bodies. They see the troubles of breast cancer, their biological disposition towards more aggressive cancers, later stage diagnoses, poorer prognoses, diminished quality of care and worse outcomes. Black women also palpably feel the troubles breast cancer brings like fear, physical disfigurement, social isolation, being stereotyped for treatment decisions, abandonment and even death. Black women feel the myriad troubles breast cancer brings. But, Black women also know God in their troubles. They know an active God who identifies with and prioritizes their needs. They know this God, through scripture and experience, as God who puts them front and center. And because they know God as an overcomer and creative force, they know themselves as overcomers. For with God, their troubles do not last always. Black women with breast cancer construct a cultural theology of breast cancer out of knowing God. Borne out of experiences of the Black Church, womanist theology and their intersectional identities of race, class and gender, this theological investigation, informed by anthropology, examines how Black women construct an ontology of who God is and how God operates and gain a God consciousness that shapes their response to the disease. Using pain, faith and testimony as tools to struggle against breast cancer Black survivors’ theology transforms them from victims of breast cancer to change agents. Out of their lives as survivors comes a theology of complex hope- one cognizant of Black women’s breast cancer disparities, yet oriented towards Black women’s achievement of health in the present and the future– a sufficient hope to sustain Black women through it all.

Book excerpt: Retired after thirty-four years of teaching high school science, Ellen Washburn Gragg was enjoying her close-knit family and church community, traveling the world, quilting Life was good. Although she had no family history of breast cancer, no risk factors, and no warning, in 2006 she discovered her breast lump while traveling with the Friendship Force program in Japan, where the futon on which she and her husband slept made the lump more obvious and probably saved her life. She is now cancer-free. Ellen survived breast cancer by depending on both science and faith. As a scientist, she did extensive research, educating herself about the physiological process of treating her disease. As a Christian, she stepped into the embrace of her faith, her family, and her loving friends to sustain and nurture herself as she healed. By bringing both these arteries into the heart of her challenge, she was able to proceed confidently and wisely on her path to becoming cancer-free. In Lady of Hope, Ellen makes the science accessible and her faith inspirational. She shares not only her personal journey but specific information and coping strategies, from eating gingersnaps to relieve nausea to the Bible verses that have given her comfort and peace. Ellen's message keeps echoing through the book: be faithful and be informed. Cancer patients and caregivers will discover how to empower themselves mentally and spiritually, and learn why, at the end of her treatments, Ellen still says, "Life is good!"

Book excerpt: A book of powerful stories about cancer patients and their families who have been touched by God in miraculous ways—some in their bodies, others in their minds, all in their spirits—offers inspiring testimony that, when God and cancer meet, cancer is conquered. The author, herself a cancer survivor, gives us a behind-the-scenes glimpse of 18 personal encounters with God. Here's what others are saying about When God & Cancer Meet: “Lynn has captured the essence of hope in this book; captured hope in ways that I have always taught in my professional world as well as in my spiritual community. This book is a treasure to those who struggle with the fears of cancer and I want to keep it close at hand for those reasons.” —Judy Lentz, RN, MSN, OCN, NHA Executive Director, Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association “I co-lead a cancer support group at my church, and we have been looking for “just the right book” to study and discuss. Guess what?! Lyn wrote it! I was truly touched by all the stories; of course being a cancer-survivor myself, I saw myself in one of the stories, as if Lyn were writing my own personal story. I was truly impressed with the way she incorporated scripture, and God's viewpoint into every story. I think that is of utmost importance for anyone facing this disease. Lyn's book is “Real-Life”; some quickly are healed of the cancer, some deal with it over a prolonged period, some deal with recurrences, some, mercifully, die rather quickly. I share Lyn's belief that GOD sometimes chooses to heal in different ways: physically, emotionally and spiritually. In the process of surviving a primary brain tumor, surgery, Chemo, and radiation, I gave my life to Christ, realizing that my physical health was not GOD's main concern, my Spiritual health was the biggest victim of a disease that needed attention and this was the way He FINALLY got my attention. Lyn's book alludes to this fact in every one of her stories. In this day and age that we are living, where it is against the rules to even mention GOD ( unless we mention His name in vain) it is refreshing to have a book written, praising Him for His care and concern for us; written by a woman who has experienced the disease firsthand, and continues to minister to others with cancer, and to work for a Doctor! who isn't ashamed of his Faith ! WOW!! Obviously, Lyn's book has my highest reccomendation, and my support group will be purchasing multple copies, and we plan to invite Lyn to speak with us. Lyn is a wonderful person, and I thank God for allowing our paths to cross. I'm sure this book will touch many lives, and give many a new perspective and hope with their cancer.” —Chris Winand, cancer survivor

But where do we find strength when we have never felt so weak? Where do we find courage to face a challenge of this magnitude? Where does hope spring from, and how do we possess it? Turning to the God she loves, Sandra found these answers in Him. This story recounts the cries of a desperate daughter seeking to find comfort, healing, and truth from her heavenly Father. Follow her journey as she learns to trust and lean on God as she walks the road to victory. "There is no voice so compelling as the voice of experience ... Ministries "Sandra's inspiring story offers hope and practical wisdom to those who are walking through difficult times, especially when faced with serious or life-threatening illnesses." -Dr. Ruth Demian, MD
