Book excerpt: This book focuses on: (1) the physics of the fundamental dynamics of fluids and of semi-immersed Lagrangian solid bodies that are responding to wave-induced loads; (2) the scaling of dimensional equations and boundary value problems in order to determine a small dimensionless parameter ε that may be applied to linearize the equations and the boundary value problems so as to obtain a linear system; (3) the replacement of differential and integral calculus with algebraic equations that require only algebraic substitutions instead of differentiations and integrations; and (4) the importance of comparing numerical and analytical computations with data from laboratories and/or nature.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: and Literature Rev iew Chapter 1 1. INTRODUCTION AND LITERATURE REVIEW The exploration for oil and gas in ever increasing water depths has given an impetus to research efforts on the behaviour of offshore structures under ocean environment. These structures are continuously subjected to environmental loading because of waves, wind and current. A response analysis is required to assess the safety of offshore structure under severe storm conditions as well as for estimation of damage caused by less severe but more frequently occuring sea states. A majority of the reported failures in the life time of offshore structures are in fact fatigue failures. The offshore structures are usually built in the form of welded tubular structures. The joints of these tubular members experience the fatigue damage mainly due to small defects in welding which act as crack initiators, high stress concentrations and the variable loads. The variable loads due to the ocean waves cause cyclic stress variation in the structural members and the accumu lated effect of these stresses results in the fatigue failure.
Book Synopsis Wave Forces on Models of Submerged Offshore Structures by : Paul E. Versowsky
Download or read book Wave Forces on Models of Submerged Offshore Structures written by Paul E. Versowsky and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of a model study of the forces caused by oscillatory waves on large rectangular tank-like submerged objects are presented. Three phases of the problem were examined: 1) description of the forces in terms of dimensionless parameters, 2) description of the effect of large wave heights which are of importance to the designer, and 3) the presentation of a format to be used in model studies on submerged structures. Theoretical studies of the problem have assumed wave heights to be small and the forces to be entirely inertial. However, of interest to the engineer are the forces caused by the larger waves generated by severe storms. In the model study the forces caused by the larger waves were determined and the effect of the water particle velocity in producing a drag force was examined. The relationships between the fluid particle displacement and the coefficients of mass and drag were evaluated. Previous studies indicate that particle displacement is related to the values of empirical coefficients assumed by previous investigation. The experimental results are given in a dimensionless form. Provided the laws of modeling are followed, and there are no scale effects, these results may be used to determine the forces on prototype structures in the ocean.

Book Synopsis Wave Loads on a Submerged Intake Structure in the Surf Zone by : Mark M.L. Hecimovich
Download or read book Wave Loads on a Submerged Intake Structure in the Surf Zone written by Mark M.L. Hecimovich and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sea water intake structures submerged in the surf zone are used to provide water for cooling processes in large facilities such as power plants and refineries. Structures submerged in the surf zone are subject to large forces from breaking waves. To study these forces induced from realistic sea state conditions, a physical model of an intake structure submerged in the wave breaking zone was constructed and subjected to a wide spectrum of regular and irregular waves. The model structure was designed in a manner so force measurement could be isolated to separate components of the structure. The data of peak forces on the structure was analyzed for correlations with varying irregular wave properties. Using the results of forcing on the structure from regular wave tests, drag and inertia coefficients for use in the Morison equation were determined for each separate component and configuration of the structure. These force coefficients were plotted against various wave properties to analyze correlations with wave conditions. Finally, the force coefficients for the structure were used with the Morison equation and current data from the experiments to successfully model forcing on the structure during irregular wave tests.

This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wave Mechanics and Wave Loads on Marine Structures provides a new perspective on the calculation of wave forces on ocean structures, unifying the deterministic and probabilistic approaches to wave theory and combining the methods used in field and experimental measurement.Presenting his quasi-determinism (QD) theory and approach of using small-scale field experiments (SSFEs), author Paolo Boccotti simplifies the findings and techniques honed in his ground-breaking work to provide engineers and researchers with practical new methods of analysis. Including numerous worked examples and case studies, Wave Mechanics and Wave Loads on Marine Structures also discusses and provides useful FORTRAN programs, including a subroutine for calculating particle velocity and acceleration in wave groups, and programs for calculating wave loads on several kinds of structures. Solves the conceptual separation of deterministic and stochastic approaches to wave theory seen in other resources through the application of quasi-determinism (QD) theory Combines the distinct experimental activities of field measurements and wave tank experiment using small-scale field experiments (SSFEs) Simplifies and applies the ground-breaking work and techniques of this leading expert in wave theory and marine construction
