Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By foregrounding successful transnational research projects conducted across Latin America and Europe, this edited collection contests epistemological hegemony and heterogeneity in the academy and highlights feasible models for research cooperation across diverse languages, cultures, and epistemologies. Chapters focus on the practical and theoretical tenets of responsible intra-national research and propose the "Glocacademia" framework as a means of enhancing critical reflection on issues that can inhibit plurilingual, intercultural, and inter-epistemic research. The text offers key recommendations to support institutions and researchers to develop intercultural awareness, multi-level citizenship, and a readiness to embrace diverse knowledge ecologies. The book builds on existing discussions on multiculturalism, interculturality, and transculturality to offer high academic value to the discussion of higher education and research. Offering important contributions to the study of global academic research, this volume will be of interest to scholars and researchers with an interest in international and comparative education, as well as multicultural studies in education research.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FAO and WHO have a long history of providing scientific advice on food safety and nutrition to Codex Alimentarius and FAO/WHO member countries. Since 2003, both organizations have been implementing a consultative process to guide their efforts to improve the quality, quantity and timeless of the scientific advice provided. The consultative process has followed several steps, including a planning meeting, an electronic forum and a workshop, facilitating an open and transparent review process that considered the opinions of all interested parties. Through this process, two key issues have been identified - the urgent need to enhance the participation of experts from developing countries in the discussions and expert meetings used to generate and provide the advice, and the importance of considering data and information from developing countries in all deliberations. FAO and WHO therefore held a meeting on this matter in December 2005 in Belgrade to address these needs. The report highlights the mechanisms identified by the meeting to reach out better to qualified experts and institutions in developing countries, including mechanisms to search for information and experts that may not be easily accessible through normal channels, and suggested plans to strengthen the capacity of developing country experts to participate effectively in expert meetings, including training efforts at international and national levels, involving governmental, non-governmental and scientific institutions. The report calls on commitment from governments, industry and academia at national and regional levels to generate scientific data from developing countries and facilitate their input to international FAO/WHO scientific advice.

Book excerpt: This book discusses how teaching and research have been weighted differently in academia in 18 countries and one region, Hong Kong SAR, based on an international comparative study entitled the Changing Academic Profession (CAP). It addresses these issues using empirical evidence, the CAP data. Specifically, the focus is on how teaching and research are defined in each higher education system, how teaching and research are preferred and conducted by academics, and how academics are rewarded by their institution. Since the establishment of Berlin University in 1810, there has been controversy on teaching and research as the primary functions of universities and academics. The controversy increased when Johns Hopkins University was established in 1876 with only graduate programs, and more recently with the release of the Carnegie Foundation report Scholarship Reconsidered by Ernest L. Boyer in 1990. Since the publication of Scholarship Reconsidered in 1990, higher education scholars and policymakers began to pay attention to the details of teaching and research activities, a kind of ‘black box’ because only individual academics know how they conduct teaching and research in their own contexts.

Book excerpt: The legal regime of outer space, as enshrined in the Declaration of Legal Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space (General Assembly Resolution 1962 (XVIII), adopted in 1963, and in the 1967 Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies, while prohibiting the appropriation of space by any means, envisages exploration for the bene?t and in the interest of all countries on a basis of equality and in accordance with international law. Freedom of scienti?c investigation is also contemplated. Elaborating on these instruments, the Assembly in 1996 adopted the Declaration on International Cooperation in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space (RES 51/122), in which it called for heightened international co-operation, with part- ular attention to be given to the bene?t for and the interests of developing countries and countries with nascent space programmes. Thus, it is self-evident that the outer space regime, including the 1972 Liability Convention, envisages the conduct of national activities “for the bene?t and in the interests of all countries, irrespective of their degree of economic or scienti?c dev- opment”. In this regard, Article 6 of the 1967 Treaty not only provides for national activities in outer space, but for international responsibility whether such activities are carried out by governmental agencies or non-governmental entities, and aims at ensuring that national activities are conducted in conformity with the Treaty.

Book excerpt: Cybersecurity has been gaining serious attention and recently has become an important topic of concern for organizations, government institutions, and largely for people interacting with digital online systems. As many individual and organizational activities continue to grow and are conducted in the digital environment, new vulnerabilities have arisen which have led to cybersecurity threats. The nature, source, reasons, and sophistication for cyberattacks are not clearly known or understood, and many times invisible cyber attackers are never traced or can never be found. Cyberattacks can only be known once the attack and the destruction have already taken place long after the attackers have left. Cybersecurity for computer systems has increasingly become important because the government, military, corporate, financial, critical infrastructure, and medical organizations rely heavily on digital network systems, which process and store large volumes of data on computer devices that are exchanged on the internet, and they are vulnerable to “continuous” cyberattacks. As cybersecurity has become a global concern, it needs to be clearly understood, and innovative solutions are required. The Handbook of Research on Advancing Cybersecurity for Digital Transformation looks deeper into issues, problems, and innovative solutions and strategies that are linked to cybersecurity. This book will provide important knowledge that can impact the improvement of cybersecurity, which can add value in terms of innovation to solving cybersecurity threats. The chapters cover cybersecurity challenges, technologies, and solutions in the context of different industries and different types of threats. This book is ideal for cybersecurity researchers, professionals, scientists, scholars, and managers, as well as practitioners, stakeholders, researchers, academicians, and students interested in the latest advancements in cybersecurity for digital transformation.

This book was released on 2019-03-01 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pace of globalization has significantly accelerated since the end of the Cold War Era in 1989. These changes profoundly affected health care systems worldwide. Health policy makers increasingly started facing new harsh challenges in their uneasy task to provide universal health coverage and decent equity of access to medical services. Among the most prominent demand-side issues are extended longevity joined with population aging, rise of non-communicable diseases, and growing patient expectations. Supply-side causes are gains in societal welfare and living standards, technological innovation in medicine and continuing rapid urbanization in developing world regions. Successful insurance-based risk sharing agreements made drug dispensing and medical service provision cheap or virtually free at the point of consumption in most OECD and many middle-income countries. Coupled with massive build-up of workforce capacities and strengthening of primary care and hospital networks, all these factors contributed to the “supplier induced demand” phenomenon. There is straightforward historical evidence of long-term growth in pharmaceutical and overall health spending both in absolute and GDP% terms worldwide. The accumulated constraints deriving from skyrocketing costs of care were felt in many areas of clinical medicine even among the richest societies. Cardinal examples of expensive and hardly affordable therapeutic areas are orphan drugs indicated to treat rare diseases and targeted biologicals used in autoimmune disorders and cancer. Last but not least, is troubled and frequently denied access to even essential generic pharmaceuticals still taking place in many nations. This appears to be particularly the case among the world's poor and under-served citizens residing in rural and suburban areas of low- and middle-income countries. To a large extent, these difficulties are worsened by lack of evidence-based resource allocation strategies and less sustainable financing strategies.
