This book was released on 1993 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aims of this discussion paper are to improve understanding of the issue of sustainable development in the context of the urban environment in Rio, to disseminate the results of the rapid diagnostic explored in the case study, to help researchers of urban environmental issues in Brazil consolidate their work, to improve the mechanisms for transferring the findings from research into urban environmental management, and to define better ways of disseminating research results. The volume discusses the vulnerability of Rio de Janeiro to environmental degradation and explores several historical antecedents. The papers which have been contributed to this volume have been grouped around seven main topics: conceptual issues, institutional issues, financial issues, operational experience and technological issues, and training, and the view from the nongovernmental organizations. The book provides a background to the physical characteristics of the city and examines the historical framework for the centralized urban development pattern, both in the country and in the State of Rio de Janeiro. It explores the conceptual framework within which to analyze the case of Rio and the institutional framework of environmental policy in Brazil and the financing of public expenditures on the environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of recent developments in land, ecosystem, and water management in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro. The state is located in the biodiversity hotspot of the Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica), a biome characterized by high biological diversity and endemism. At the same time the state of Rio de Janeiro emerged to one of the economic hubs in Latin America. This development process has been accompanied by population growth, industrialization, urbanization, as well as consumption and degradation of land and water resources. In the past years many efforts have been made to stop or at least slow down these degradation processes and restore degraded environments with the overall goal to bring together sustainable management of natural resources, nature conservation, and economic development. An overview is provided of the different strategies and tools that have been developed in the fields of agriculture, ecosystem management and biodiversity, integrated water management, land restoration, disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation, as well as environmental governance and economic instruments. This book covers a wide spectrum from applied research to science‐policy interfaces, planning concepts, and technical tools and has a model character for other rural areas in Latin America. Target groups are scientists, practitioners, policy makers and graduate students in the field of environmental management. The different chapters are written by researchers and practitioners of the German‐Brazilian project INTECRAL (Integrated Eco Technologies and Services for a Sustainable Rural Rio de Janeiro), the rural development program Rio Rural under the state secretary for agriculture and animal husbandry, as well as invited scientists from Brazilian universities and research institutes. It bridges existing gaps between science, policies, and practice in rural development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although many developing countries have environmental statutes, regulations, and resolutions on the books, these laws are rarely enforced and often ignored. Making Law Matter presents the first book-length treatment of an innovative prosecutorial institution, the Brazilian Ministrio Publico, which refashioned itself in the 1980s into a powerful defender of citizen rights in environmental protection, as well as in other areas of public interest such as disability rights, consumer protection, and anticorruption. In Brazil, the offices of prosecutors and courts have become an important forum for resolving environmental conflicts, making environmental law more effective than in the past. Court involvement communicates the end of impunity for violators. It increases the accountability of governmental agencies and provides legal access for citizen complaints. In short, it enhances environmental rule of law. As developing countries continue to seek to reform their legal systems to strengthen democracy and the rule of law, the Brazilian Ministrio Publico must be recognized as a very promising model.
