Book Synopsis Beyond the Quantum by : Theo M. Nieuwenhuizen
Download or read book Beyond the Quantum written by Theo M. Nieuwenhuizen and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2007 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Already Einstein could never see quantum mechanics as a complete theory. Nowadays, many researchers, including 't Hooft, view quantum mechanics as a statistical description of some underlying reality. The workshop Beyond the Quantum, organized in Spring 2006 at the Lorentz Center in Leiden, The Netherlands, was one of the first meetings completely devoted to physics that may need an explanation beyond quantum mechanics. A broad variety of subjects was covered. The present book reflects this. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: The Mathematical Basis for Deterministic Quantum Mechanics (267 KB). Contents: Introductions: The Mathematical Basis for Deterministic Quantum Mechanics (G 't Hooft); What Did We Learn from Quantum Gravity? (A Ashtekar); BoseOCoEinstein Condensates and EPR Quantum Non-Locality (F Lalo1/2); The Quantum Measurement Process: Lessons from an Exactly Solvable Model (A E Allahverdyan et al.); Quantum Mechanics and Quantum Information: POVMs: A Small but Important Step Beyond Standard Quantum Mechanics (W M de Muynck); State Reduction by Measurements with a Null Result (G Nienhuis); Solving Open Questions in the BoseOCoEinstein Condensation of an Ideal Gas via a Hybrid Mixture of Laser and Statistical Physics (M Kim et al.); Long Distance Correlations and Bell Inequalities: Fair Sampling vs No-Signalling Principle in EPR Experiments (G Adenier & A Yu Khrennikov); Mathematical Foundations: Where the Mathematical Structure of Quantum Mechanics Comes From (G M D'Ariano); Phase Space Description of Quantum Mechanics and Non-Commutative Geometry: Wigner-Moyal and Bohm in a Wider Context (B J Hiley); Quantum Mechanics as Simple Algorithm for Approximation of Classical Integrals (A Yu Khrennikov); Stochastic Electrodynamics: Some Quantum Experiments from the Point of View of Stochastic Electrodynamics (V apicka et al.); Models for the Electron: Rotating Hopf-Kinks: Oscillators in the Sense of de Broglie (U Enz); The Electron and the Neutrino as Solitos in Classical Electromagnetism (Th M Nieuwenhuizen); Philosophical Considerations; Round Table; and other papers. Book Synopsis Bronze Age Metalworking in the Netherlands (c. 2000-800 BC) by : M. H. G. Kuijpers
Download or read book Bronze Age Metalworking in the Netherlands (c. 2000-800 BC) written by M. H. G. Kuijpers and published by Sidestone Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost fifty years ago J. J. Butler started his research to trace the possible remains of a Bronze Age metalworker's workshop in the Netherlands. Yet, while metalworking has been deduced on the ground of the existence of regional types of axes and some scarce finds related to metalworking, the smith's workplace has remained elusive. In this Research Master Thesis I have tried to tackle this problem. I have considered both the social as well as the technological aspects of metalworking to be able to determine conclusively whether metalworking took place in the Netherlands or not. The first part of the thesis revolves around the social position of the smith and the social organization of metalworking. My approach entails a re-evaluation of the current theories on metalworking, which I believe to be unfounded and one-sided. They tend to disregard production of everyday objects of which the most prominent example is the axe. The second part deals with the technological aspects of metalworking and how these processes are manifested in the archaeological record. Based on evidence from archaeological sites elsewhere in Europe and with the aid of experimental archaeology a metalworking toolkit is constructed. Finally, a method is presented which might help archaeologists recognize the workplace of a Bronze Age smith.

Book Synopsis Beyond Priesthood by : Richard L. Gordon
Download or read book Beyond Priesthood written by Richard L. Gordon and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-08-21 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last decade has seen a surge of scholarly interest in these religious professionals and a good number of high quality publications. Our volume, however, with its unique intercultural character and its explicit focus on appropriation and contestation of religious expertise in the Imperial Era is substantially different. Unlike the rather narrow focus of earlier studies of civic priests, the papers presented here examine a wider range of religious professionals, their dynamic interaction with established religious authorities and institutions, and their contributions to religious innovation in the ancient Mediterranean world, from the late Hellenistic period through to Late Antiquity, from the City of Rome to mainland Greece, Asia Minor, Syria and Egypt, from Greek civic practice to ancient Judaism. A further advantage of our volume is the wide range of media of transmission taken into account. Our contributors look at both old and new materials, which derive not only from literary sources but also from papyri, inscriptions, and material culture. Above all, this volume assesses critically convenient terminological usage and offers a unique insight into a rich gamut of ancient Mediterranean religious specialists.

Book Synopsis The Enemy at the Gate by : Andrew Wheatcroft
Download or read book The Enemy at the Gate written by Andrew Wheatcroft and published by Random House. This book was released on 2009-11-10 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1683, two empires - the Ottoman, based in Constantinople, and the Habsburg dynasty in Vienna - came face to face in the culmination of a 250-year power struggle: the Great Siege of Vienna. Within the city walls the choice of resistance over surrender to the largest army ever assembled by the Turks created an all-or-nothing scenario: every last survivor would be enslaved or ruthlessly slaughtered. The Turks had set their sights on taking Vienna, the city they had long called 'The Golden Apple' since their first siege of the city in 1529. Both sides remained resolute, sustained by hatred of their age-old enemy, certain that their victory would be won by the grace of God. Eastern invaders had always threatened the West: Huns, Mongols, Goths, Visigoths, Vandals and many others. The Western fears of the East were vivid and powerful and, in their new eyes, the Turks always appeared the sole aggressors. Andrew Wheatcroft's extraordinary book shows that this belief is a grievous oversimplification: during the 400 year struggle for domination, the West took the offensive just as often as the East. As modern Turkey seeks to re-orient its relationship with Europe, a new generation of politicians is exploiting the residual fears and tensions between East and West to hamper this change. The Enemy at the Gate provides a timely and masterful account of this most complex and epic of conflicts.
