Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are Brain Snacks? Well, there's an old adage, “Success leaves tracks, and failure does, too.” In other words, if someone is particularly successful in an area of his or her life, then there are things that person is doing day in and day out to produce that success. Likewise, if someone is particularly unsuccessful at something, there are probably things he or she has done that have become obstructions. So, in essence, Brain Snacks are effective ideas and strategies, with detailed tactics, to help you turbo-charge your life. They're delicious and nutritious pieces of information that can help you become happier, healthier, and more successful in your life and, ultimately, make the world a better place. So, before reading a book whose origin and purpose are so centered on ideas, tactics, and strategies, it's important to understand how we define those three words in our language. Merriam Webster Dictionary defines an idea as “a formulated thought or opinion;” a tactic as “a device for accomplishing an end;” and a strategy as “a careful plan or method.” In this way, it's pretty clear how those three words are related: an idea can engender a solution to a certain problem, and that solution would require a strategy, which would in turn comprise of various implementable tactics. In sum, the idea is the prime mover, the strategy is the plan, and the tactics are the ideological tools. The ideas, tactics, and strategies in this book have been helpful to me throughout my life, and my hope is that they will be just as helpful to you. The book is broken up into four parts: Your Brain, Your Body, Your Life, and x Your World. There's a good reason for this order. Everything we do begins with our brain. Life for us might as well not exist without our brain, since everything we perceive takes place inside of it. All our thoughts, actions, habits, reflections, emotions—everything that constitutes existing—originates from our brain. Therefore, on the road to changing ourselves and those around us for the better, the brain is the first destination. Once we have achieved a level of mastery over our brain, we can begin to control our body. We can gear our habits toward improving our health, fitness, and well-being, and we can maintain those habits over time—but only if we have disciplined our brain to do so. Once we have control over our brain and our body, we are well on our way to controlling all the other, less tangible aspects of our life, from building confidence to developing a stronger character. And as you will read on the next page, we cannot expect to change our world for the better if we cannot change ourselves for the better first.REVIEWS:"Filled with bite-size pieces of wisdom and humor, this fantasticbook is perfect for teens striving to better their lives. When you read these Brain Snacks, you will find muchmore than just friendly advice from a fellow teenager; youwill find true nourishment for both body and soul."- Sean CoveyBest-Selling Author of The 7 Habits ofHighly Effective Teens"If I could go back in time four years and buy just onemore book, it would be Brain Snacks for Teens on the Go!Alex has done the amazing feat of consolidating all thewisdom painstakingly milked piece by piece bycountless generations of confused teenagers into oneportable and exceedingly endearing little book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teenagers are perplexing, intriguing, and spirited creatures. In an attempt to discover the secrets to their thoughts and actions, parents have tried talking, cajoling, and begging them for answers. The result has usually been just more confusion. But new and exciting light is being shed on these mysterious young adults. What was once thought to be hormones run amuck can now be explained with modern medical technology. MRI and PET scans view the human brain while it is alive and functioning. To no one's surprise, the teenage brain is under heavy construction! These discoveries are helping parents understand the (until now) unexplainable teenager. Neuroscience can help parents adjust to the highs and lows of teenage behavior. Typically, this transformation is a prickly proposition for both teens and their families, but the trials and tribulations of adolescence give teenagers a second chance to develop and create the brain they will take into adulthood.

It addresses brain-compatible learning, which makes it appropriate for a much wider group of students than just the very brightest. Approaches and strategies are explained in a unique and personal style and include the following: use of inter-disciplinary themes, analytical thinking exercises, teaching moral dilemmas, Socratic questioning techniques, increasing depth and complexity through interactive games, activities to promote creative thinking, using graphic organizers, and teaching research skills and methods. The author demonstrates how all these strategies and approaches work together to help teachers create a more meaningful learning experience for all students. An added benefit of the author's training, as reflected in this book, is to help put the creativity and search for knowledge back into the learning process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has information that helps fill the gap between modern food technology and nutrition, and the use of this knowledge by teenagers. Boys and girls are very much aware of the wonders of present-day technology. They want accurate scientific information to help them in various space-age ventures. Many know that vital nutrients in the foods they eat affect their appearance, strength, endurance and resistance to disease. Many do not know that foods affect their personalities, mental performance and the health of their future children. Teenage girls often have not been told that those who are poorly nourished during the teen years will have babies with more congenital abnormalities, lower pediatric ratings, and more stillborn and premature births than girls who are well-fed regardless of how carefully they eat during pregnancy. They will have more complications before, during and after pregnancy. The field of nutrition and food chemistry has become so complex that it is difficult for teenagers to take advantage of information now available. Many popular beliefs about foods are based on superstitions rather than scientific truths and many are too complicated to be useful. In this book only the most important food facts are presented. Simple, quick methods for calculating vitamin, mineral and calorie content of foods are described. Suggestions for economical eating are given, as well as inexpensive low calorie recipes. Medical checkups by a physician rather than self-medication are stressed. Since a student's physical appearance and his or her performance in sports and school work are affected by food intake over long periods of time, the prime goal of this book is to encourage consistently good food habits.

Book excerpt: This unique guide pairs the expertise of a trained child psychologist with the fresh voice and perspective of her young daughter to help children and their parents embark on an emotional regulation journey while strengthening their relationships and nurturing their confidence to overcome life obstacles. The young readers will learn, alongside their caregivers, how to set goals, deal with setbacks, and live a life in line with their values. Dr. Dessy and Lora’s guide will help us better understand ourselves and our loved ones, recognizing why we feel and act the way we do and deepen our empathy and care for each other. Using a holistic approach, Dr. Dessy offers step-by-step guidelines on managing strong emotions anytime and anyplace. With simple language and fun illustrations, Dr. Dessy and Lora explain how our brains work, with Aimie (the amygdala) making us feel, Brightie (the cerebral cortex) making us think, and Dooie (the pre-frontal cortex) making us act. By keenly understanding how these parts of us act and interact, and practicing the lessons and exercises offered in this guide, you and your child will be empowered to face fears in any setting. The toolkit with strategies will help children and other family members enjoy events, places, and situations avoided in the past or suffered through because of baseless worries and a thousand “what ifs.” Intended primarily for parents/caregivers with children aged eight to twelve and mental health professionals, this guide addresses a growing societal problem: Research shows that anxiety disorders are the most prevalent mental health conditions worldwide, impacting the quality of life of millions of children and their families. But whether it’s anxiety issues or any other strong emotions, this book will help people get a handle on why they feel the things they feel and learn what to do about it. Indeed, the readers will be equipped to use proven science-based strategies to cultivate a resilient mindset preparing them to tackle life’s biggest challenges.

All are surprisingly difficult to forget. The short story "Brain Food" tells of a distressed woman who happens on an unbelievably cruel and callous way of ridding herself of her violent, drunken husband. "Cottage Pies" appears to be set within an idyllic village, but all is not as it seems. Soon, a shockingly brutal child murder and rape shatter the tranquility. The villagers take matters into their own hands in determining the culprit and inflicting a suitable penalty.Yet another story, "Asudem," tells of a traveller's meeting on an idyllic Greek island with a beautiful, sophisticated woman that gives every indication of proving to be the start of a truly rewarding relationship. Instead, it is the prelude to a tale that takes a different, horrific direction."Never Say Die" illustrates that there may be worse things than dying. Far from bringing peace and relief from a ghastly terminal illness, death instead brings the most horrible transformation. In contrast, "My Good Friend Sam" tells a story of true friendship, but still offers an unpredictable ending.

Book excerpt: It was the year of Guinness. I entered a new highschool as an eighteen year old after taking a two year leave of absence to care for my daughter. I met Guinness in English class. He’d fallen asleep in the seat directly in front of me. I poked him in the back with a pencil to ensure he wouldn’t be hit with the wrath of Mr. Bellows. Guinness introduced himself to me when the class was over. That’s where it all began. Over the course of the year, our friendship would be tested. The discussion of love, lust, lies and self preservation are hot topics in this book. As the story evolves and eventually concludes, we learn that everything is not always what it appears to be. Through the bond of friendship, the characters find hope and strength and learn that money can't buy happiness.

Book excerpt: 'A refreshingly healthy take on social media and particularly good on body image' Lorraine Candy, Sunday Times The teen years are tough - for teens and for parents. Many parents dread the moodiness, dishonesty, preference of friends over family, exam stress, and the push for greater independence. Mothers have a pivotal role to play; this is a guidebook for parents and mothers of girls in particular as they navigate the rocky teenage landscape with their daughters aged 8 to 18. It aims to help them embrace the potential of their child's teenage years by marking this time of growing maturity for girls and celebrating it with them. We celebrate birth, marriage and death, but this important life-transition from child to young adult is nowadays rarely acknowledged within an appropriate community. With mental health issues in young people on the rise, and social media, reality television and smartphone culture serving to exacerbate these problems, it is no surprise that parents are looking for help in raising their daughters through these tricky years. From Daughter to Woman is the indispensable guide to doing just that.
