Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in the New Geography We live in a world of ideas. The real things of life impress themselves upon our brains, through our senses, and are grouped as so many mental pictures in the various complex relations which they hold to one another. In studying Geography the child very early gains ideas or mental pictures of different scenes and places, and it is of the utmost importance that these pictures be not only true, but living ideas of the things themselves. It should be impressed upon every child that Geography is a part of his everyday life, not a mere learning of the names of places, but a living reality. The imagination - that quality of the brain which enters so largely into child life, peopling its wonderland with fairies and creations of fancy - is the one element needful in gaining the, ideas of real things. In proportion as a study stimulates the imaginative faculty does it near the end in view of all study - that of creating a fulness of interest in life and in the lives of every man and woman. The purpose of this book is to bring this conception of Geography to the teacher's mind. The map is a means of gaining clear ideas of the positions of places on the earth's surface in relation to one another. We all carry mental maps in our brains. Our sense of direction is often determined by the early use or 4 misuse of maps. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Set during the first pivotal year of the Covid-19 pandemic, Guru Pi, a teacher, finds himself staying with a family in the UK. He embraces three challenges: reading a stack of books equal to his own height within a year, contemplating the vastness of a Googol (10100), and participating in a unique cultural interview. As Pi shares his eccentric ideas, some are welcomed while others are met with skepticism. This unexpected situation provides Pi with an opportunity to explore his life in ways he never thought possible. His world expands as he discovers the beauty of wildflowers, the wonder of birds, and other captivating aspects of nature. At its core, this novel celebrates the camaraderie among the characters at the Beck household and the diverse friends Pi makes at the local café, bars, and allotment. Through his eclectic reading and encounters with literary characters, Pi embarks on a transformative journey, ultimately embracing a profound shift in his personal philosophy.

Book excerpt: `The authors bring a spark of vitality and life to an area that could be cynically viewed as a series of conflicting fads and fashions....I would recommend anyone in the process of reviewing or designing an entrepreneurship development course to consider the benefits that this book would bring to the teaching process′ - Entrepreneurship and Innovation `Using fiction in the classroom as an approach to stimulating the study of people in organizations is well-established. What this book contributes is a way of exploring some of the existential elements of life in organizations, which are typically difficult to study. It will be on my reading lists. Hopefully, this example, and regrettably few others which exist, will contribute in the long term to the reformulation of how the lived experience of organizational life may be explored in the classroom′ - Leadership & Organization Development Journal Based on courses taught by the authors over many years, this innovative text is a lively and accessible analysis of people at work and the problems they have to confront. The student is introduced to a range of key themes in management such as: power and identity; consumption and bureaucracy; rational choice and meaning all through the medium of characters and situations in contemporary literature. The clear theoretical framework, supported by footnotes, summaries and further reading guides, makes this an introduction to management the student will find useful as well as enjoyable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To Live Heroically examines American Indian education during the last century, comparing the tribal, mission, and Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) schools and curriculums and the assumptions that each system made about the role that Indians should assume in society. This significant book analyzes the relationship between the rise of institutional racism and the fall of public education in the United States using the history of American Indian education as a model. The author asserts that had the federal government really wanted an educated, self-sufficient Indian population, it would have selected the successful nineteenth-century tribal models of Indian education rather than the mission or BIA schools. And her description of the reservation and bordering white community demonstrates the depth of institutional racism and its impact on local politics, economics, and education. Huff wants the reader to see how policy is made about Indian education and to recognize the complex issues that Indian (and other minority) families and educators deal with in real communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historiographers of religious studies have written the history of this discipline primarily as a rationalization of ideological, most prominently theological and phenomenological ideas: first through the establishment of comparative, philological and sociological methods and secondly through the demand for intentional neutrality. This interpretation caused important roots in occult-esoteric traditions to be repressed. This process of “purification” (Latour) is not to be equated with the origin of the academic studies. De facto, the elimination of idealistic theories took time and only happened later. One example concerning the early entanglement is Tibetology, where many researchers and respected chair holders were influenced by theosophical ideas or were even members of the Theosophical Society. Similarly, the emergence of comparatistics cannot be understood without taking into account perennialist ideas of esoteric provenance, which hold that all religions have a common origin. In this perspective, it is not only the history of religious studies which must be revisited, but also the partial shaping of religious studies by these traditions, insofar as it saw itself as a counter-model to occult ideas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It can be a surprise to find that Buddhism gives great importance to the Sangha, the spiritual community. Some may feel that their guru or teacher is all that they need. To others, the idea of sharing their inner and outer lives with others can seem a challenge or even a threat. But the spiritual community is not about unthinking conformity or belonging to a comfortable group. Rather, it is the free association of developing individuals choosing to help each other along the path.
