Book excerpt: Privacy is an unwieldy concept that has eluded an essentialised definition despite its centrality and importance in the body of bioethics. The compilation presented in this volume represents continuing discussions on the theme of privacy in the context of genetic information. It is intended to present a wide range of expert opinion in which the notion of privacy is examined from many perspectives, in different contexts and imperatives, and in different societies, with the hope of advancing an understanding of privacy through the examination and critique of some of its evolving component concepts such as notions of what constitute the personal, the context of privacy, the significance and impact of the relational interests of others who may share the same genetic inheritance, and mechanisms for the protection of privacy (as well as of their limitations), among others. More specifically, the discussions in this volume encourages us to think broadly about privacy, as encompassing values that are entailed in the sociality of context and of relations, and also as freedom from illegitimate and excessive surveillance. A long-standing question that continues to challenge us is whether genetic information should be regarded as exceptional, as it is often perceived. A conclusion that could be derived from this volume is that while genetic information may be significant, it is not exceptionally so. The work presented in this volume underlines the continuing and growing relevance of notions of privacy to genomic science, and the need to take ownership of a genetic privacy for the future through broad, rigorous and open discussion.Contributors: Alastair V Campbell, Benjamin Capps, Jacqueline JL Chin, Oi Lian Kon, Kenji Matsui, Thomas H Murray, Nazirudin Mohd Nasir, Dianne Nicol, Anh Tuan Nuyen, Onora O'Neill, Margaret Otlowski, Yvette van der Eijk, Chunshui Wang, Ross S White.

Book excerpt: Asymptotic properties of solutions such as stability/ instability,oscillation/ nonoscillation, existence of solutions with specific asymptotics, maximum principles present a classical part in the theory of higher order functional differential equations. The use of these equations in applications is one of the main reasons for the developments in this field. The control in the mechanical processes leads to mathematical models with second order delay differential equations. Stability and stabilization of second order delay equations are one of the main goals of this book. The book is based on the authors’ results in the last decade. Features: Stability, oscillatory and asymptotic properties of solutions are studied in correlation with each other. The first systematic description of stability methods based on the Bohl-Perron theorem. Simple and explicit exponential stability tests. In this book, various types of functional differential equations are considered: second and higher orders delay differential equations with measurable coefficients and delays, integro-differential equations, neutral equations, and operator equations. Oscillation/nonoscillation, existence of unbounded solutions, instability, special asymptotic behavior, positivity, exponential stability and stabilization of functional differential equations are studied. New methods for the study of exponential stability are proposed. Noted among them inlcude the W-transform (right regularization), a priory estimation of solutions, maximum principles, differential and integral inequalities, matrix inequality method, and reduction to a system of equations. The book can be used by applied mathematicians and as a basis for a course on stability of functional differential equations for graduate students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of my lecture notes, Functional Differential Equations in the Applied Mathematical Sciences series, many new developments have occurred. As a consequence, it was decided not to make a few corrections and additions for a second edition of those notes, but to present a more compre hensive theory. The present work attempts to consolidate those elements of the theory which have stabilized and also to include recent directions of research. The following chapters were not discussed in my original notes. Chapter 1 is an elementary presentation of linear differential difference equations with constant coefficients of retarded and neutral type. Chapter 4 develops the recent theory of dissipative systems. Chapter 9 is a new chapter on perturbed systems. Chapter 11 is a new presentation incorporating recent results on the existence of periodic solutions of autonomous equations. Chapter 12 is devoted entirely to neutral equations. Chapter 13 gives an introduction to the global and generic theory. There is also an appendix on the location of the zeros of characteristic polynomials. The remainder of the material has been completely revised and updated with the most significant changes occurring in Chapter 3 on the properties of solutions, Chapter 5 on stability, and Chapter lOon behavior near a periodic orbit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book offering an application of regular variation to the qualitative theory of differential equations. The notion of regular variation, introduced by Karamata (1930), extended by several scientists, most significantly de Haan (1970), is a powerful tool in studying asymptotics in various branches of analysis and in probability theory. Here, some asymptotic properties (including non-oscillation) of solutions of second order linear and of some non-linear equations are proved by means of a new method that the well-developed theory of regular variation has yielded. A good graduate course both in real analysis and in differential equations suffices for understanding the book.

Book excerpt: This book presents asymptotic methods for boundary-value problems (linear and semilinear, elliptic and parabolic) in so-called thick multi-level junctions. These complicated structures appear in a large variety of applications. A concise and readable introduction to the topic, the book provides a full review of the literature as well as a presentation of results of the authors, including the homogenization of boundary-value problems in thick multi-level junctions with non-Lipschitz boundaries, and the construction of approximations for solutions to semilinear problems. Including end-of-chapter conclusions discussing the results and their physical interpretations, this book will be of interest to researchers and graduate students in asymptotic analysis and applied mathematics as well as to physicists, chemists and engineers interested in processes such as heat and mass transfer.

Book excerpt: This is the second volume of Nonlinear Equations with Small Parameter containing new methods of construction of global asymptotics of solutions to nonlinear equations with small parameter. They allow one to match asymptotics of various properties with each other in transition regions and to get unified formulas for connection of characteristic parameters of approximate solutions. This approach underlies modern asymptotic methods and gives a deep insight into crucial nonlinear phenomena. These are beginnings of chaos in dynamical systems, incipient solitary and shock waves, oscillatory processes in crystals, engineering constructions and quantum systems. Apart from independent interest the approximate solutions serve as a foolproof basis for testing numerical algorithms. The second volume will be related to partial differential equations.

Book excerpt: The primary focus of the book is to explore the asymptotic behavior of problems formulated within cylindrical structures. Various physical applications are discussed, with certain topics such as fluid flows in channels being particularly noteworthy. Additionally, the book delves into the relevance of elasticity in the context of cylindrical bodies. In specific scenarios where the size of the cylinder becomes exceptionally large, the material's behavior is determined solely by its cross-section. The investigation centers around understanding these particular properties.Since the publication of the first edition, several significant advancements have been made, adding depth and interest to the content. Consequently, new sections have been incorporated into the existing edition, complemented by a comprehensive list of references.

Within that development, boundary value problems have played a prominent role in both the theory and applications dating back to the 1960's. This book attempts to present some of the more recent developments from a cross-section of views on boundary value problems for functional differential equations.Contributions represent not only a flavor of classical results involving, for example, linear methods and oscillation-nonoscillation techiques, but also modern nonlinear methods for problems involving stability and control as well as cone theoretic, degree theoretic, and topological transversality strategies. A balance with applications is provided through a number of papers dealing with a pendulum with dry friction, heat conduction in a thin stretched resistance wire, problems involving singularities, impulsive systems, traveling waves, climate modeling, and economic control. With the importance of boundary value problems for functional differential equations in applications, it is not surprising that as new applications arise, modifications are required for even the definitions of the basic equations. This is the case for some of the papers contributed by the Perm seminar participants. Also, some contributions are devoted to delay Fredholm integral equations, while a few papers deal with what might be termed as boundary value problems for delay-difference equations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Conference on Differential Equations contains the proceedings of an International Conference on Differential Equations held at the University of Southern California, on September 3-7, 1974. The papers review advances in the qualitative-analytic theory of differential equations and highlight three broad areas: analytic theory (singular perturbations), qualitative theory (boundary value problems), and mathematical control theory (variational methods). Comprised of 82 chapters, this book begins with a discussion on continuous extensions, their construction, and their application in the theory of differential equations. The reader is then introduced to an approach to boundary control of partial differential equations based on the theory of semigroups of operators; lower closure and existence theorems in optimal control; and a nonlinear oscillation theorem. Subsequent chapters focus on matrices of rational functions; asymptotic integration of linear differential systems; solutions near bifurcated steady states; and geometric views in existence theory. This monograph will be of interest to students and instructors of mathematics.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on the basic techniques of separation of variables and Fourier series, the book presents the solution of boundary-value problems for basic partial differential equations: the heat equation, wave equation, and Laplace equation, considered in various standard coordinate systems--rectangular, cylindrical, and spherical. Each of the equations is derived in the three-dimensional context; the solutions are organized according to the geometry of the coordinate system, which makes the mathematics especially transparent. Bessel and Legendre functions are studied and used whenever appropriate throughout the text. The notions of steady-state solution of closely related stationary solutions are developed for the heat equation; applications to the study of heat flow in the earth are presented. The problem of the vibrating string is studied in detail both in the Fourier transform setting and from the viewpoint of the explicit representation (d'Alembert formula). Additional chapters include the numerical analysis of solutions and the method of Green's functions for solutions of partial differential equations. The exposition also includes asymptotic methods (Laplace transform and stationary phase). With more than 200 working examples and 700 exercises (more than 450 with answers), the book is suitable for an undergraduate course in partial differential equations.

Book excerpt: Recent Advances in Differential Equations contains the proceedings of a meeting held at the International Center for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy, on August 24-28, 1978 under the auspices of the U.S. Army Research Office. The papers review the status of research in the field of differential equations (ordinary, partial, and functional). Both theoretical aspects (differential operators, periodic solutions, stability and bifurcation, asymptotic behavior of solutions, etc.) and problems arising from applications (reaction-diffusion equations, control problems, heat flow, etc.) are discussed. Comprised of 33 chapters, this book first examines non-cooperative trajectories of n-person dynamical games and stable non-cooperative equilibria, followed by a discussion on the determination and application of Vekua resolvents. The reader is then introduced to generalized Hopf bifurcation; some Cauchy problems arising in computational methods; and boundary value problems for pairs of ordinary differential operators. Subsequent chapters focus on degenerate evolution equations and singular optimal control; stability of neutral functional differential equations; local exact controllability of nonlinear evolution equations; and turbulence and higher order bifurcations. This monograph will be of interest to students and practitioners in the field of mathematics.
