Book excerpt: This book discusses the latest progresses and developments on complex systems research and intends to give an exposure to prospective readers about the theoretical and practical aspects of mathematical modelling, numerical simulation and agent-based modelling frameworks. The main purpose of this book is to emphasize a unified approach to complex systems analysis, which goes beyond to examine complicated phenomena of numerous real-life systems; this is done by investigating a huge number of components that interact with each other at different (microscopic and macroscopic) scales; new insights and emergent collective behaviours can evolve from the interactions between individual components and also with their environments. These tools and concepts permit us to better understand the patterns of various real-life systems and help us to comprehend the mechanisms behind which distinct factors shaping some complex systems phenomena being influenced. This book is published in conjunction with the International Workshop on Complex Systems Modelling & Simulation 2019 (CoSMoS 2019): IoT & Big Data Integration. This international event was held at the Universiti Sains Malaysia Main Campus, Penang, Malaysia, from 8 to 11 April 2019. This book appeals to readers interested in complex systems research and other related areas such as mathematical modelling, numerical simulation and agent-based modelling frameworks.

After discussing several examples of these problems, similarity solutions are derived and solved using the latest proven methods, including bvp4c from MATLAB, the Keller-box method, singularity methods, and more. Numerical solutions and asymptotic results for limiting cases are also discussed in detail to investigate how flow develops at the leading edge and its end behavior. Detailed discussions of mathematical models for boundary layer flow and heat transfer of micro-polar fluid and hybrid nanofluid will help readers from a range of disciplinary backgrounds in their research. Relevant background theory will also be provided, thus helping readers solidify their computational work with a better understanding of physical phenomena. - Provides mathematical models that address important research themes, such as boundary layer flow and heat transfer of micro-polar fluid and hybrid nanofluid - Gives detailed numerical explanations of all solution procedures, including bvp4c from MATLAB, the Keller-box method, and singularity methods - Includes examples of computer code that will save readers time in their own work

Book excerpt: This book presents the optimal auxiliary functions method and applies it to various engineering problems and in particular in boundary layer problems. The cornerstone of the presented procedure is the concept of “optimal auxiliary functions” which are needed to obtain accurate results in an efficient way. Unlike other known analytic approaches, this procedure provides us with a simple but rigorous way to control and adjust the convergence of the solutions of nonlinear dynamical systems. The optimal auxiliary functions are depending on some convergence-control parameters whose optimal values are rigorously determined from mathematical point of view. The capital strength of our procedure is its fast convergence, since after only one iteration, we obtain very accurate analytical solutions which are very easy to be verified. Moreover, no simplifying hypothesis or assumptions are made. The book contains a large amount of practical models from various fields of engineering such as classical and fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, nonlinear oscillations, electrical machines, and many more. The book is a continuation of our previous books “Nonlinear Dynamical Systems in Engineering. Some Approximate Approaches”, Springer-2011 and “The Optimal Homotopy Asymptotic Method. Engineering Applications”, Springer-2015.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Micropolar fluids are fluids with microstructure. They belong to a class of fluids with nonsymmetric stress tensor that we shall call polar fluids, and include, as a special case, the well-established Navier-Stokes model of classical fluids that we shall call ordinary fluids. Physically, micropolar fluids may represent fluids consisting of rigid, randomly oriented (or spherical) particles suspended in a viscous medium, where the deformation of fluid particles is ignored. The model of micropolar fluids introduced in [65] by C. A. Eringen is worth studying as a very well balanced one. First, it is a well-founded and significant generalization of the classical Navier-Stokes model, covering, both in theory and applications, many more phenomena than the classical one. Moreover, it is elegant and not too complicated, in other words, man ageable to both mathematicians who study its theory and physicists and engineers who apply it. The main aim of this book is to present the theory of micropolar fluids, in particular its mathematical theory, to a wide range of readers. The book also presents two applications of micropolar fluids, one in the theory of lubrication and the other in the theory of porous media, as well as several exact solutions of particular problems and a numerical method. We took pains to make the presentation both clear and uniform.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illustrates Calculations Using Machine and Technological Processes The conjugate heat transfer (CHT) problem addresses the thermal interaction between a body and fluid flowing over or through it. This is an essential consideration in nature and different areas of engineering, including mechanics, aerospace, nuclear engineering, biology, and meteorology. Advanced conjugate modeling of the heat transfer process is now used extensively in a wide range of applications. Conjugate Problems in Convective Heat Transfer addresses the latest theory, methods, and applications associated with both analytical and numerical methods of solution CHT problems and their exact and approximate solutions. It demonstrates how the true value of a CHT solution is derived by applying these solutions to contemporary engineering design analysis. Assembling cutting-edge information on modern modeling from more than 200 publications, this book presents more than 100 example applications in thermal treatment materials, machinery operation, and technological processes. Creating a practical review of current CHT development, the author includes methods associated with estimating heat transfer, particularly that from arbitrary non-isothermal surfaces in both laminar and turbulent flows. Harnesses the Modeling Power of CHT Unique in its consistent compilation and application of current knowledge, this book presents advanced CHT analysis as a powerful tool for modeling various device operations and technological processes, from relatively simple procedures to complex multistage, nonlinear processes.
