Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Botany for Agricultural Students Although students vary widely in their reasons for studying Botany, the fundamental facts or principles of the subject are not thereby altered. One has considerable freedom, however, in the presentation of the subject to adapt the subject matter to special aims of different classes of students, and especially is this true in courses for agricultural students, since much of the work in Agriculture is based upon the principles of Botany. In the choice of material to illustrate principles and in the presentation of the applications of principles, there is special opportunity to relate courses in Botany to courses in Agriculture. In any elementary course in Botany, regardless of the kind of education the student desires to obtain, the primary aim should be to give the student a notion of the fundamental principles of Botany. This aim should be the guiding one in both recitation and laboratory, determining the trend of discussions in recitation, and the nature of the material and procedure in the laboratory. The primary aim should be accompanied by a secondary aim to relate the subject to the students major line of work. When the relation of the subject to major lines of work is obvious, the student is more likely to appreciate the subject and is thereby put in a favorable mood to study the subject. Even for students who take Botany merely as a part of a general education, it in no way detracts from the course or makes botanical training less efficient to present the practical aspects of the subject. This book is intended for elementary courses in Botany in colleges and universities. In its preparation the aim has been to present the fundamental principles of Botany with emphasis upon the practical application of these principles. The subject matter is presented in two parts, part I being devoted to the study of the structures and functions chiefly of Flowering Plants, and Part II, to the study of the kinds of plants, relationships, Evolution, Heredity, and Plant Breeding. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the oldest and largest human intervention in nature, the science of agriculture is one of the most intensely studied practices. From manipulation of plant gene structure to the use of plants for bioenergy, biotechnology interventions in plant and agricultural science have been rapidly developing over the past ten years with immense forward leaps on an annual basis. This book begins by laying the foundations for plant biotechnology by outlining the biological aspects including gene structure and expression, and the basic procedures in plant biotechnology of genomics, metabolomics, transcriptomics and proteomics. It then focuses on a discussion of the impacts of biotechnology on plant breeding technologies and germplasm sustainability. The role of biotechnology in the improvement of agricultural traits, production of industrial products and pharmaceuticals as well as biomaterials and biomass provide a historical perspective and a look to the future. Sections addressing intellectual property rights and sociological and food safety issues round out the holistic discussion of this important topic. Includes specific emphasis on the inter-relationships between basic plant biotechnologies and applied agricultural applications, and the way they contribute to each other Provides an updated review of the major plant biotechnology procedures and techniques, their impact on novel agricultural development and crop plant improvement Takes a broad view of the topic with discussions of practices in many countries

Book excerpt: Plant Tissue Culture and Its Agricultural Applications presents the proceedings of the 41st University of Nottingham Easter School in Agricultural Science held in England. The sessions covered in this volume reflect the revolution of tissue culture and its role in the propagation of elite plant material and the development of improved genotypes. This book is organized into four main sections. The first section chronicles the revolution of the plant tissue culture. This includes papers on clonal propagation, morphogenesis, germplasm storage, plant health, and genetic improvement. The core of this volume is covered by the introductory and the final chapters which interrelate the different subjects areas covered by the proceedings and provide a realistic assessment of future research required for the plant tissue culture revolution to come to fruition. This book will be useful to readers interested in understanding the history, evolution, and future of plant tissue culture and its applications in the agricultural sector.

Book excerpt: This book integrates knowledge of plant biotechnology, plant physiology, and the environment. It presents new information about soil organic carbon sequestration using plant species (tropical grasses) that have potential in climate change mitigation. It also presents scientific knowledge on the multipurpose role of microRNA (miRNA), focusing mainly on stress tolerance in crop plants. Chapters discuss uses, methods, and advantages of recombinant DNA technology and novel plant biotechnology applications for plant-based vaccines. This volume brings together knowledge about non-edible plants seeds as potential sources of biodiesel production to mitigate the global energy crisis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continued population growth, rapidly changing consumption patterns and the impacts of climate change and environmental degradation are driving limited resources of food, energy, water and materials towards critical thresholds worldwide. These pressures are likely to be substantial across Africa, where countries will have to find innovative ways to boost crop and livestock production to avoid becoming more reliant on imports and food aid. Sustainable agricultural intensification - producing more output from the same area of land while reducing the negative environmental impacts - represents a solution for millions of African farmers. This volume presents the lessons learned from 40 sustainable agricultural intensification programmes in 20 countries across Africa, commissioned as part of the UK Government's Foresight project. Through detailed case studies, the authors of each chapter examine how to develop productive and sustainable agricultural systems and how to scale up these systems to reach many more millions of people in the future. Themes covered include crop improvements, agroforestry and soil conservation, conservation agriculture, integrated pest management, horticulture, livestock and fodder crops, aquaculture, and novel policies and partnerships.
