Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Award-winning historian Tamika Y. Nunley has unearthed the stories of enslaved Black women charged by their owners with poisoning, theft, murder, infanticide, and arson. While free Black and white people accused of capital crimes received a hearing, trial, and, if convicted, an opportunity to appeal, none of these options were available to enslaved people. Conviction was final, and only the state or owners could spare their accused chattel of punishment by death. For enslaved women in Virginia, clemency was not uncommon, but Nunley shows why this act ultimately benefitted owners and punished the accused with sale outside of the state as the best possible outcome. Demonstrating how crimes, convictions, and clemency functioned within a slave society that upheld the property interests of white Virginians, Nunley reveals the frequency with which owners preferred to keep the accused in bondage, which allowed them, behind the veil of paternalism, to continue to benefit from Black women's labor. This so-called clemency also sought to rob Black women of the power they exercised when they committed capital crimes. The testimonies that Nunley has collected and analyzed offer compelling glimpses of the self-identities forged by Black women as they attempted to resist enslavement and the limits of justice available to them in the antebellum courtroom.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Botany of the United States North of Virginia: Comprising Descriptions of the Flowering and Fern-Like Plants Hitherto Found in Those States This volume is intended as a Class-book for the beginner, and a convenient Manual for the more advanced botanist. It contains scientific and popular descriptions of the Flowering and Fern-like plants found in the United States north of Virginia, with their English names, and brief notices of their uses. The arrangement is according to the Natural System, which is now so generally adopted in works of this kind. But in order to secure all the advantages of the Linnaean system, a Synopsis of the Genera in accordance with it is prefixed, containing references to the Natural Orders, and to the page where the species are described. And fully to carry out the design of the work, there have also been introduced, a Sketch of the Rudiments of Botany, a Glossary of Botanical Terms, and a Table explanatory of the Linnaean Classes and Orders. While the original plan of the work has been adhered to, I have endeavored, in this edition, to bring it up to the present advanced state of botanical science. There is scarcely a page which has not been amended, and many parts have been entirely re-written. Brevity has in all cases been consulted, as far as was deemed consistent with that clearness of description so important in the study of plants. In the names and characters of the Natural Orders, I have chiefly followed Dr. Lindley's late work, entitled "The Vegetable Kingdom;" although the general arrangement adopted in the first edition has not been materially changed.
