Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Antique Views of Ye Towne of Boston No city in the United States gathers within its limits more matter of national historic import than the city of Boston. There is not a foot of its original territory (we say original from the fact that more than two thirds of its present territory is made ground), but what is associated with our country's struggle for liberty or the trials and privations of its early settlers. To the antiquary it presents an inexhaustible store of surprises and a veritable mine of pleasure. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. There never was such a place for children. The population is mostly under seven years Old, for it was about seven years ago that young married people began to move into it in such numbers, because it is so healthy; but it was always a great place for them even when it was small. The Old inhabitants are mostly grand fathers and grandmothers now, and enjoy it very much; but they usually go into town in the winter, with such unmarried children as they have left, to get a little change; for there is no denying that there is a sameness about it - the sidewalks are crowded with perambula tors every pleasant day, and at our parties the talk is apt to run too much on nursery-maids, and milkmen and their cows, and drains, to be very interesting to those who have not learned how terribly important such things are. SO in winter we - I mean the young married couples, Of whom I am half a one - are left pretty much to our own devices. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Town-House of Boston From the infant days of the struggling puritan settlement, gathered upon the Peninsula of Shawmut, nestling in the low land lying between Beacon, Fort and Copp's Hills, and follow ing the water line of the Town Dock, now'covered by the pres ent Quincy Market and streets abutting upon it even farther inland, this site has, been one of central interest. Here, upon land now forming the present corner of State and Dev onshire streets, the fathers of early Boston consecrated with prayer and psalm, their first religious edifice, and it was here, also, that they first held their deliberations upon the conduct of their temporal affairs. As early as 1634, according to an unquestionable authority, a parcel of grwd, definately rec ognized and described in the Book of Possessiom, under date of eleven years later, was set apart as a market place. This estate, the area of which has never been curtailed or widened, is to-day intact, enclosed within the walls of the Old State House. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Boston Days Ways: From the Dawn of the Revolution Until the Town Became a City Almost of necessity a town is a different thing, and has a social life quite distinct, from a city. On its political side it is endowed with color and individuality, from the very fact that its humblest inhabitant may, at town meet ing, raise his voice to oppose the motion of the richest and most renowned man in the com munity. And, on the social side, it possesses a simplicity of interests, a delightful neighborli ness, and a quality of charming intimacy which may never be claimed by a city. So, in this book, which takes up where my St. Botolph's Town dropped it, the story of Boston's Share in the struggle for in dependence, I have stopped just short of the time when we blossomed into a munici pality and indulged in a mayor and aldermen. The end of Boston's life as a town seemed to me really the end of an era and I thought I could paint a better picture of life and manners here, during the period which followed the Revolution, if I did not venture far into the history of the nineteenth century. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boston: Illustrated Boston was selected as the centre and metropolis of the Massachusetts Colony. The nucleus of the Colony was large, and the several towns lying along the coast were, considering the circumstances, rapidly settled. During the year 1630 as many as fifteen hundred persons came from England. In ten years not less than twenty thousand had been brought over. The records show that in 1639 there was a muster in Boston of the militia of the Colony to the number of a thousand able-bodied and well-armed men. It is impossible to learn accurately the population of Boston at any time during the first century after its settlement, since no enumeration was made; but there is authority for the statement that in 1674 there were about fifteen hundred families in the town, and the population of New England was then reckoned at one hundred and twenty thousand. The early history of Boston has been an almost inexhaustible field for the researches of local antiquaries. Considering that almost three quarters of a century elapse before the first newspaper was printed, the materials for making a complete account of the events that occurred, and for forming a correct estimate of the habits and mode of life of the people, are remarkably abundant. The records have been searched to good purpose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
