Book excerpt: When I was 19 and in college I worked at a bookstore with a coffee/espresso shop attached. It was a nice place and went for the higher class book readers, not the paperback crowd. The job was no big deal and most of the workers were part-timers like me. The best part of the job though was the boss's wife. Late 30's and very attractive. She also had a step-son who was going to come home from college on a visit soon. Maybe I could "re-introduce" them...

Book excerpt: This is a message from the Virgin Girl: From here, I will start my life. From here, I will build a bridge, walk on it, go up to the top of the ranks that many people dream of, break all the barriers that stand in my way, and walk on it and then rise to the top and raise my head. I dream of a prosperous future a lot—one that can fill my life with joy and happiness and raise the reputation of my family. Yes, I was born to a low-income but respectable family, and I was subjected to the worst methods of persecution. I have received tempting offers from senior people in businesses about selling my beautiful body to them so they could relish it on quiet music strings and piano tones. I didn’t care about the palaces filled with bliss I couldn’t get, and I turned down all these offers and walked with a clean, pure, and flawless face to confront a bitter and difficult life. But I promised myself to strike hard at the one who hurt my family and me, who distorted my good reputation. I have a hellish internal power. I’m not going to show it right now, but I will unleash it in front of the one who thinks he can buy me with money. I lost my family, and I stayed alone and had no one in my life, but I will take revenge on the one who destroyed my life. I will raise the flag of triumph in the end. But will she confess? To lose one husband may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like murder.Louisa Collins was hung in New South Wales in 1889. She was tried four times for the alleged murders of her two husbands. In three of those trials the juries could not agree that she was guilty. At her fourth trial the testimony of Louisa’s young daughter, May, contributed to Louisa’s conviction. Intimately reimagined from Louisa’s perspective, with a story that just might fit the historical facts, this clever and compelling novel visits Louisa in her prison cell as she reflects on her life and the death and loss that have dictated her fate. Will she confess? Or was an innocent woman brutally hanged?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Wives and Husbands, distinguished anthropologist Loretta Fowler deepens readers’ understanding of the gendered dimension of cultural encounters by exploring how the Arapaho gender system affected and was affected by the encounter with Americans as government officials, troops, missionaries, and settlers moved west into Arapaho country. Fowler examines Arapaho history from 1805 to 1936 through the lens of five cohorts, groups of women and men born during different year spans. Through the life stories of individual Arapahos, she vividly illustrates the experiences and actions of each cohort during a time when Americans tried to impose gender asymmetry and to undermine the Arapahos’ hierarchical age relations. Fowler examines the Arapaho gender system and its transformations by considering the partnerships between, rather than focusing on comparisons of, women and men. She argues that in particular cohorts, partnerships between women and men — both in households and in the community — shaped Arapahos’ social and cultural transformations while they struggled with American domination. Over time Arapahos both reinforced and challenged Arapaho hierarchies while accommodating and resisting American dominance. Fowler shows how, in the process of reconfiguring their world, Arapahos confronted Americans by uniting behind strategies of conciliation in the early nineteenth century, of civilization in the late nineteenth century, and of confrontation in the early twentieth century. At the same time, women and men in particular cohorts were revamping Arapaho politico-religious ideas and organizations. Gender played a part in these transformations, giving shape to new leadership traditions and other adaptations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slick Watts arrived in Seattle with nothing but his name, shiny head, headband, and his personality. He remains there to this day--one of the most memorable and likable icons of Seattle sports history. Not only did he win over the his first coach--Bill Russell--he won over an entire city that seemed desperate to embrace a role model with whom it could relate. Watts's sense of style, his humble beginnings, his down-to-earth personality and his determined hustle on the court made him more than a sports hero; he became larger than life. Some say if Watts ran for governor of Washington in the '70s, he would have won. He achieved the impossible: he became bigger than Russell. Watts details how his relationship with Russell deteriorated at the same time that relationships blossomed with Wilt Chamberlain, Walt Frazier, Bill Walton, Bob Lanier, Reggie Jackson, Jessie Jackson, Pistol Pete Maravich, and many others. He also reveals how a promising career abruptly ended at the hands of Hall of Fame coach and player Lenny Wilkens. Watts gives an insider's view of how Seattle's first professional sports team evolved through growing pains and into a world champion. In his unique Mississippi dialect, Watts spins tales about teammates, coaches, opponents, and some of the most memorable games in which he participated. He also outlines his journey from an unknown entity to an overnight celebrity--forced to move twice because people were camping outside his house. Much like the way he played the game, Watts combines boundless energy and unexpected entertainment as he spins, jumps, and shoots his way through this collection of tales from Seattle's original hardwood.

Book excerpt: A modern classic of literature in Japan, Supermarket is a novel of the human drama surrounding the management of a supermarket chain at a time when the phenomenon of the supermarket, imported postwar from the US, was just taking hold in Japan. When Kojima, an elite banker resigns his job to help a cousin manage Ishiei, a supermarket in one of Japan's provincial cities, a host of problems ensue. Store employees are stealing products, the books are in disaray, and the workers seem stuck in old ways of thinking. As Kojima begins to give all his time over to the relentless task of reforming the store's management, a chance encounter with a woman from his childhood causes him to ask the age-old question: is the all encompassing pursuit of business success really worth it? Sincere and naive in tone, Supermarket takes us back to a simpler, kinder time, and skillfully presents the depictions of its characters alongside a wealth of information concerning Japanese post WWII recovery and industrialization.
