Book excerpt: Since the 1960s, Southeast Asia's agricultural sector has experienced phenomenal growth, with increases in production linked to an energy-intensive capitalization of agriculture and the rapid development of agrifood systems and agribusiness. Agricultural intensification and territorial expansion have been key to this process, with expansion of areas under cultivation playing an unusually important role in the transformation of the countryside and livelihoods of its inhabitants. Borneo, with vast tracts of land not yet under crops, has been the epicenter of this expansion process, with rubber and oil palm acting as the spearhead. Indonesia's Kalimantan provinces and the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak have all undergone major changes but the time frames have varied, as have the crops involved. Agricultural expansion in Borneo is both an economic and a political process, and it has brought about profound socio-economic transformations, including deforestation, and development of communication networks. There has also been rapid population growth, much faster than in either Indonesia or Malaysia as a whole, with attendant pressures on employment, housing and social services. Until the end of the 20th century, agricultural expansion in Indonesia and Malaysia was largely state driven, with the goal of poverty reduction. Subsequently, as in Borneo, boom crop expansion has been taken over by private corporations that are driven by profit maximization rather than poverty reduction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With “In the Land of Living Dangerously”, an adventure travelogue set in Indonesia, author Jay Cowan explores myriad issues experienced during his travels in the Indonesian archipelago from culture and history to politics and anthropology, from exotic endemic wildlife and huge environmental challenges to one-on-one encounters with volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and tsunamis, the natural disasters that keep the region in the news. Cowan and his wife climbed 13,500-foot Mount Kinabalu, took river trips deep into the interior of Borneo, were on-site for the huge eruptions of Mount Merapi volcano in Java, got a close-up view of Indonesia’s infamous corruption in Bali and witnessed radical Islamic terrorist activities that have rocked the region — all while trying to avoid getting bird flu, dengue fever, malaria, Bali belly and a variety of other brutal tropical diseases that run rampant in the area and are now focal points for battles over who controls the viruses and their potential vaccines. As well as getting up close and personal with Indonesia’s famous Komodo dragons, the author tracked down other seriously endangered species in their native habitats including orangutans, pygmy elephants, tarsiers, giant yellow-lipped clams, proboscis monkeys, mouse deer and several dozen more imperiled species of animals and birds. This exciting and informative travelogue also includes discussions of US President Obama’s childhood in Java, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s visits to the area, a plane ride with Indonesia’s then-Vice-President Jusuf Kalla, and an interview by the author with the Foreign Minister of China on a beach in Bali.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through an examination of Methodist mission to Southeast Asia at the turn of the twentieth century, this broad-ranging book unites the history of globalization with the history of Christian mission and the history of Southeast Asia. The book explores the international connections forged by the Methodist Episcopal Church’s Malaysia Mission between 1885 and 1915, putting them in the context of a wave of globalization that was sweeping the world at that time, including significant developments in Southeast Asia. To establish intellectual connections between the study of globalization and this historical setting, the book suggests six metaphors for understanding the mission. Each metaphor is based on some aspect of secular globalization: the Methodist connection as a migratory network, mission agencies as multinational corporations, the Malaysia Mission as a franchise system, the Methodist Episcopal Church as a media conglomerate, mission institutions as civil society organizations, and Methodist mission as a global vision. In chapters exploring each metaphor separately, the book reviews how each form of secular globalization functions to create transnational connections before examining the details of how the Malaysia Mission functioned in a similar fashion. Along the way, the book investigates the lives of all involved in the mission: missionaries, church members of the mission, and mission supporters. Although Southeast Asia (including the Straits Settlements, Federated Malay States, Sarawak, and Netherlands Indies) and the United States are important geographic foci for the book, India, China, Britain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Germany, Australia, and Canada all have parts to play. In exploring these metaphors, the book draws on several scholarly fields including migration studies, business history, media studies, political theory, and cultural history, blending them together into a social history of the mission. By so doing, it identifies both ways in which the effects of Christian mission paralleled other globalizing forces and unique contributions Christian mission made to turn-of-the-twentieth-century globalization.
