Book excerpt: Excerpt from Book-Prices Current, Vol. 9: A Record of the Prices at Which Books Have Been Sold at Auction, Have Been Sold at Auction, From December, 1894, to November, 1895 This volume of Book-Prices Current, the ninth of the series, is, in one respect, more noticeable than most that have preceded it. Though a greater number of sales by auction have been held during the year than at any period since 1887, the sum total of entries in this volume is less than it has ever been. The bulk of the work has not, however, materially decreased by reason of this, nor has its importance been affected in the slightest degree. On the contrary, the quality of the books sold was much higher than it has been for a long time, and a glance at the index will show that they were, on the whole, of an exceptional character. Some books there are which may be looked for with confidence in every volume of Book-Prices Current, while others are less frequently seen. It is this fact that invests the complete series with an immense interest, and renders it of utility and value in the hands of all who take more than a passing interest in books, or who are in daily touch with them. The great object has always been to make the best selection possible from the auctioneers' catalogues, having regard, above all things, to the character of the books sold, their condition, and the number of times they have been noted before in the same volume. Sixty-four high-class sales have been held during the current year, and these sales comprised 45,431 lots of property, a number which, though large, has at times been considerably exceeded. Thus, in 1893, nearly 50,000 lots were disposed of, and in 1894 rather more than 51,000, showing an average of 1 6s. 7d. and 1 8s. 5d. per lot respectively. This year the 45,431 lots of property brought 71,229 and some odd shillings, showing a wholly unusual average of 1 11s. 4d.
