Book excerpt: In a starred review, PW called this "a haunting love letter to New Orleans." Rebecca Brown couldn't feel more out of place in New Orleans, where she comes to spend the year. She's staying in a creepy old house with her Aunt Claudia, who reads tarot cards for a living. And at the snooty prep school, the filthy-rich girls treat Rebecca like she's invisible. Only gorgeous, unavailable Anton Grey seems to give Rebecca the time of day, but she wonders if he's got a hidden agenda. Then one nigh, in a cemetery, Rebecca makes a friend. Sweet, mysterious Lisette is eager to show Rebecca the nooks and crannies of New Orleans. There's just one catch: Lisette is a ghost. A ghost with a deep, dark secret and a score to settle. As Rebecca learns more from her ghost friend-and as she slowly learns to trust Anton Grey-she also uncovers startling truths about her own history. Will Rebecca be able to right the wrongs of the past, or has everything been ruined beyond repair?

Emphasis falls on the variegated, often joyful, culture of the Polish Jews, on what existed before the garden was ruined." --Geoffrey Hartmann, The New Republic "From these marvelous selections, one can see an entire culture unfolding." --Curt Leviant, New York Times Book Review "This newly revised version of the classic study... is a pleasure for the eye and the soul One of the seminal studies of the impact of the Shoah on European Jewry, it is even more moving in its new incarnation than in its original version. More than a collection of studies of books of remembrance and mourning, this volume asks how one can mourn for a world lost and still live in the present and the future." --Sander L. Gilman "Kugelmass and Boyarin have done a splendid job of combing the vast memorial book literature to select the most revealing accounts of Jewish life in interbellum Poland. Ordinary people speak in this volume with an immediacy and poignancy that cannot help but touch the reader. In the time since it first appeared, From a Ruined Garden has become a classic. Its reappearance in an updated and expanded form is most welcome." --Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett "In this magnificent collection, the editors combine a profound 'feel' for the vanished world of Polish Jewry, the anthologist's skill at selecting the telling example, and the anthropologist's sophisticated understanding of how these testimonies should be read. A marvelous introduction to this rich literature." --Peter Novick Polish Jewish survivors of the Holocaust compiled memorial books to preserve the memory of their destroyed communities. They describe daily life in the shtetl as well as everyday life during the Holocaust and the experiences of returning survivors. These memories paint a haunting picture of a way of life lost forever.

Book excerpt: One of the Greatest Persian Classic Book آب آوردم به تحفه بهر نان بوی نانم برد تا صدر جنان نان برون راند آدمی را از بهشت نان مرا اندر بهشتی در سرشت I brought water as a gift for the sake of (getting) bread: the hope of bread led me to the highest place in Paradise. Bread drove an Adam forth from Paradise: bread caused me to mix with those who belong to Paradise. Mathnawi Maˈnavi (also known as Masnavi or “Spiritual Couplets of Maulana”) is one of the most influential works of both Sufism and Persian literature. The Masnavi, written by Jalal al-Din Muhammad, Rumi is a series of six books of poetry containing more than 25,000 verses. This spiritual writing teaches Sufis how to reach their goal of being in true love with God. Rumi is one of the best Persian poets and the Mathnawi is his masterpiece. Rumi used Persian and Arabic in his poetry. By the end of the 20th century, Rumi’s popularity had become a global phenomenon, with his poetry achieving a wide circulation in the United States and western Europe. His poems have been translated into many different languages including Turkish, Urdu, French, Turkmen, Spanish, English, Arabic, German, Italian, Albanian, Swedish, etc. Reynold Alleyne Nicholson's translation of Mathnawi is based on the oldest known manuscripts. The prose translation, similarly, is intended to be an exact and faithful guide to the Persian. In Book, the first of six volumes, Rumi opens the spiritual path towards higher spiritual understanding. We are very happy that the Mathnawi Maˈnavi of Rumi has found its way to you!
