Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boogie-woogie touches the heart and lifts the spirits of both players and listeners. Unlike most other musical styles the piano takes centre stage and is not just an accompanying instrument. Boogie & blues piano combines boogie-woogie, blues, rock and rock 'n' roll elements into an enticing mix. The rules of improvisation and how to play along in jam sessions are much easier to learn than, for instance, in complex jazz. Many tricks and licks for playing boogie-woogie have before now been passed from person to person in the international music scene and have not been available in published books. For outstanding pianist and Steinway artist JOJA WENDT, discovered by Joe Cocker during a jam session in a Hamburg piano bar and booked by him as a support act, boogie-woogie was the entry into a successful international career that has now spanned more than 30 years. JOJA WENDT and ULRIKE GAATE, who is one of the very few female boogie & blues piano players in Europe, are experienced musicians who have collaborated to produce this exciting book. They present easily understood and succinct expert tips to help amateur enthusiasts and the next generation of talent alike enter the fascinating world of boogie & blues piano. The book contains clearly structured information provided by experienced professionals, tips for live performance, piano sheet music, original compositions, fingering notations, a large variety of bass lines and multiple exercises. More than 40 mp3 audio samples are downloadable from Joja Wendt's online piano academy: www.jojaspianoacademy.de. Eight original transcriptions, including by Hersal Thomas, Albert Ammons, Meade 'Lux' Lewis und Jimmy Yancey, are included. In addition, many photos, anecdotes and behind-the-scenes stories make this book engrossing, informative and a pleasure to read. The level of the book is ranging in difficulty from lower intermediate to advanced learners.

Now with this book and video pack, trace the history of boogie woogie guitar with blues historian Dave Rubin and learn how to play the essential patterns that influenced generations of musicians. Features video lessons with demonstrations of every music example in the book!
Book Synopsis The Story of Boogie-Woogie by : Peter J. Silvester
Download or read book The Story of Boogie-Woogie written by Peter J. Silvester and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2009-07-29 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Story of Boogie-Woogie: A Left Hand Like God examines the socio-historical background of the boogie-woogie piano style, from its early appearances in the barrelhouses of lumber, turpentine, and railroad camps in the southern United States, to its emergence at rent parties in Chicago and St. Louis, to its rise as a popular form of music in the nightclubs of New York, to its status as an international craze during World War II. In this enhanced revision of A Left Hand Like God, Peter J. Silvester presents a comprehensive history of boogie-woogie, describing the style's appearance and development, its offshoots, and the pianists who made it famous, and studying its impact on rhythm and blues, urban blues, and big band swing, leading to the eventual revival of 'classical' boogie-woogie in concerts and festivals. Silvester discusses significant European and American pianists of boogie-woogie throughout history, providing biographical information about their life styles and musical influences and offering an analysis of their important recordings. The book also includes a new chapter on the contribution of national and independent record companies to the recording of boogie-woogie music. A thorough bibliography and a final appendix providing many of the bass patterns common in boogie-woogie make this a valuable reference.

Book Synopsis Blues and Boogie Piano Styles by : Hakim El yamri
Download or read book Blues and Boogie Piano Styles written by Hakim El yamri and published by . This book was released on 2021-03-25 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The outline used as the basis of most of improvisations follows a specific musical form known as "theme and variations." This is appropriate for a vocal art such as the blues wherein the vocalist repeats a basic chantlike melody many times, using a new set of words for each repetition. In instrumental music such as solo blues piano, lacking a text to provide new impetus from chorus to chorus, it is up to the pianist to create something captivating enough to maintain interest. To this end the blues pianist generally develops a collection of techniques which are featured one by one during each song. The secret of blues and jazz piano improvisation is that a performer acquires a body of right hand techniques which are available to be employed for each and every piece performed, with the left hand providing changes in bass patterns, tempos and keys from song to song. Since the rule is, a change of bass pattern equals a change in style, it is fascinating to observe how completely fresh a particular tune will sound when the left hand introduces new bass patterns from piece to piece while the right hand retains the same music. This impression of freshness is especially enhanced when each piece is, played in a new key at a different tempo. To summarize, beca se the right hand techniques remain constant and since a great number of blues songs have their origins in just a handful of prototypical blues songs (1) it could almost be said that the blues artist knows only one blues piece (so to speak) which is played at fast, medium and slow tempos, in various keys over many kinds of bass patterns.
