Book Synopsis Avian Energetics and Nutritional Ecology by : C. Carey
Download or read book Avian Energetics and Nutritional Ecology written by C. Carey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A symposium held in 1973 chaired and organized by William R. Dawson was the first major attempt to summarize and synthesize the existing information in the then emerging field of avian energetics. The symposium featured papers by James R. King, William A. Calder III, Vance A. Tucker, and Robert E. Ricklefs and com mentaries by George A. Bartholomew, S. Charles Kendeigh, and Eugene P. Odum. The proceedings of the symposium, Avian Energetics (Paynter 1974), played a critical role in stimulating interest and research in the field of avian energetics. Some twenty-odd years later, we are making another attempt to summarize the information in the field of avian energetics. Some obvious differences exist be tween its predecessor and this volume. Numerous improvements in methodology, such as the use of doubly labeled water to estimate metabolism in free-living birds, now allow researchers to ask questions that could not be addressed previ ously. Second, consideration of nutrition is now inseparable from that of energet ics. This merger is necessary not only because food intake is the source of both en ergy and nutrients but also because one or more nutrients, rather than energy, can be limiting for a given species in a particular instance. Finally, the study of ener getics and nutritional ecology, particularly in birds and mammals, has grown so dramatically that a single volume can now only partially cover the range of possi ble topics and can catalogue only a sampling of all the studies on the subject.

Book Synopsis Women Beware Women by : Thomas Middleton
Download or read book Women Beware Women written by Thomas Middleton and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-07-03 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the great Renaissance playwrights, Middleton wrote tragedies essentially different from either Marlowe's or Shakespeare's, being wittier than the former and more grittily ironic than the latter. The genre of 'citizen tragedy' came into its own in the eighteenth century, but Middleton can claim to have created it: Bianca, wife of a middling commercial agent, arouses the lust of the Duke of Florence and becomes his mistress, first secretly, then openly and finally, after her husband has been seduced by the scheming Lady Livia and stabbed by Livia's brother, the Duke's wife. Livia plots her revenge, and the play ends with a banquet and a masque that are a triumph of black farce. Middleton's powerful, psychologically complex female characters and his clear-sighted analysis of misogyny are bound to impress today's audiences, but it is the pervasive irony - cynicism, even - with which he dissects the motivations of both oppressor and victim that makes him so eerily modern.
Book Synopsis Shakespeare the Historian by : P. Pugliatti
Download or read book Shakespeare the Historian written by P. Pugliatti and published by Springer. This book was released on 1995-12-18 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a major reassessment of Shakespeare's dominant dramatic genre, Paola Pugliatti explores the historiographical quality of Shakespeare's histories. Her main assumption is that Shakespeare's staging of English history helped to shape a new historiography. In particular, multi-perspectivism in the treatment of political issues produced a problem-oriented kind of historical perspective. This exploited the opportunities offered by the theatrical medium, and inaugurated a drama which portrayed history as a critical outlook on a world of problems and retrospective possibilities, rather than as unconditional belief in, or even worship of, a world of facts.
