Book excerpt: As a method of joining with economic, performance-related and environmental advantages over traditional welding in some applications, adhesive bonding of joints in the marine environment is increasingly gaining popularity. Adhesives in marine engineering provides an invaluable overview of the design and use of adhesively-bonded joints in this challenging environment. After an introduction to the use of adhesives in marine and offshore engineering, part one focuses on adhesive solution design and analysis. The process of selecting adhesives for marine environments is explored, followed by chapters discussing the specific design of adhesively-bonded joints for ship applications and wind turbines. Predicting the failure of bonded structural joints in marine engineering is also considered. Part two reviews testing the mechanical, thermal and chemical properties of adhesives for marine environments together with the moisture resistance and durability of adhesives for marine environments. With its distinguished editor and international team of expert contributors, Adhesives in marine engineering is an essential guide for all those involved in the design, production and maintenance of bonded structures in the marine environment, as well as proving a key source for academic researchers in the field. - Provides an invaluable overview of the design and use of adhesively-bonded joints in marine environments - Discusses the use of adhesives in marine and offshore engineering, adhesive solution design and analysis, and the design of adhesively-bonded joints for ship applications and wine turbines, among other topics - Reviews testing the mechanical, thermal and chemical properties of adhesives for marine environments, together with the moisture resistance and durability of these adhesives
Book Synopsis Wood & Fire Safety by : Linda Makovicka Osvaldova
Download or read book Wood & Fire Safety written by Linda Makovicka Osvaldova and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-14 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This proceedings volume presents new scientific works of the research workers and experts from the field of Wood Science & Fire. It looks into the properties of various tree species across the continents affecting the fire-technical properties of wood and wood-based materials, its modifications, fire-retardant methods and other technological processes that have an impact on wood ignition and burning. The results of these findings have a direct impact on Building Construction and Design describing the fire safety of wooden buildings, mainly large and multi-story ones. The results of these experiments and findings may be applied, or are directly implemented into Fire Science, Hazard Control, Building Safety which makes the application of wood and wood materials in buildings possible, while maintaining strict fire regulations. One part of the contributions focuses on the symbiosis of the material and the fire-fighting technologies. Wood burning has its own specific features, therefore, the fire protection technologies need to be updated regularly. It also includes the issue of the intervention of fire-fighting and rescue teams in the fires of wooden buildings. Presentations deal with the issue of forest fires influenced by the climate changes, relief, fuel models based on the type and the age of the forest stand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wood composites have shown very good performance, and substantial service lives when correctly specified for the exposure risks present. Selection of an appropriate product for the job should be accompanied by decisions about the appropriate protection, whether this is by design, by preservative treatment or by wood modification techniques. This Special Issue, Advances in Wood Composites presents recent progress in enhancing and refining the performance and properties of wood composites by chemical and thermal modification and the application of smart nanomaterials, which have made them a particular area of interest for researchers. In addition, it reviews some important aspects in the field of wood composites, with particular focus on their materials, applications, and engineering and scientific advances, including solutions inspired biomimetrically by the structure of wood and wood composites. This Special Issue, with a collection of 13 original contributions, provides selected examples of recent Advances in Wood Composites

Book Synopsis Review of Progress in Quantitative Nondestructive Evaluation by : Donald O. Thompson

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to increase the understanding of damage in composite materials with through-the-thickness reinforcements. As a first step it was necessary to develop new ultrasonic imaging technology to better assess internal damage of the composite. A useful ultrasonic imaging technique has been successfully developed to assess the internal damage of composite panels. The ultrasonic technique accurately determines the size of the internal damage. It was found that the ultrasonic imaging technique was better able to assess the damage in a composite panel with through-the-thickness reinforcements than by destructively sectioning the specimen and visual inspection under a microscope. Microscopic determination of crack location and lengths in a composite panel with through-the-thickness reinforcements was almost impossible. Five composite compression-after-impact panels were tested. The compression-after-impact strength of the panels with the through-the thickness reinforcements was almost twice that of the comparable panel without through-the-thickness reinforcement.
