Book excerpt: The use of carbon fiber composite cables (CFCC) as pretensioned and post-tensioned flexural reinforcement in bridge structures has increased over the past decade. Concrete bridges in Michigan face the challenge of enduring numerous freeze-thaw cycles and exposure to various deicing salts. These factors collectively contribute to the deterioration of these bridges. The cyclic freezing and thawing of concrete create cracks that serve as pathways for deicing salts to penetrate and initiate corrosion of the steel reinforcement within the structures. The long-term performance and corrosion free properties of CFCC makes it a better alternative for steel reinforcement. In this research study, different properties of 0.7 in. (17.2 mm) CFCC with revised guaranteed strength have been evaluated. Transfer length and development length of prestressed 0.7 in (172.2 mm) CFCC were determined using small-scale cylindrical specimens. Transfer length is the length required for the restressing strands to transfer the prestressing force to the surrounding concrete while development length is the length required for the reinforcement or prestressing strands to develop its full strength without premature failure or slipping. The strain responses were plotted and observed to determine the transfer length while the mode of failure and load until failure was recorded to determine the development length. To confirm the test results and assess the impact of environmental conditions on the transfer and development lengths, the flexural capacity of half scale decked bulb T beams prestressed with 0.7 (17.2 mm) CFCC strands was evaluated before and after exposure to 300 cycles of freeze and thaw cycles. Two sets of half-scaled decked bulb T beam[s] were used for this test, one set before and one set after freeze and thaw cycles. Loading/unloading cycles were used in the flexural test. The ultimate failure load and mode of failure were observed and recorded. Deflection at midspan, concrete strain and strain at strands level were documented in each load cycle and plotted graphs against load. Test results of transfer length test showed it ranges from 44 times the diameter of strand. The development length was determined by observing the results of flexural test of half scale beams, the development length can be estimated as 8 f. (2.43 m). After the freeze and thaw cycles and flexural tests, it was found that the freeze thaw cycles affected the concrete strength more than the CFCC reinforced.

Much research has been conducted over the last two decades to evaluate the use of Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRPs) in concrete structures. Structural engineering researchers have been testing FRP to determine their usability instead of steel for strengthening existing reinforced concrete structures, reinforcing new concrete members, and for prestressed concrete applications. The high strength-to-weight ratio of FRP materials, especially Carbon FRP (CFRP), and their non-corrosive nature are probably the most attractive features of FRPs. In this study, an experimental program was conducted to investigate the flexural behavior of prestressed concrete beams pre-tensioned with CFRP strands. The bond characteristics were examined by means of experimentally measuring transfer length, flexural bond length, and bond stress profiles. A total of four rectangular beams pre-tensioned with one 0.5-in. diameter CFRP strand were fabricated and tested under cyclic loading for five cycles, followed by a monotonically increasing load until failure. In investigating bond properties, the experimental results were compared to the equations available in the literature. The results from the four flexural tests showed that the main problem of CFRP strands, in addition to their liner-elastic tensile behavior, was lack of adequate bonding between FRP and concrete. Poor bonding resulted in early failure due to slippage between FRPs and concrete. As a result, a new technique was developed in order to solve the bonding issues and improve the flexural response of CFRP prestressed concrete beams. The new technique involved anchoring the CFRP strands at the ends of the concrete beams using a new "steel tube" anchorage system. It was concluded that the new technique solved the bond problem and improved the flexural capacity by about 46%. A computer model was created to predict the behavior of prestressed beams pre-tensioned with CFRP. The predicted behavior was compared to the experimental results. Finally, the experimental results were compared to the behavior of prestressed concrete beams pre-tensioned with steel strands as generated by the computer model. The CFRP beams showed higher strength but lower ductility.

Book excerpt: Bond between spliced Carbon Fiber Composite Cables (CFCC) and concrete is a critical design parameter that controls the performance of reinforced concrete members at service and ultimate limit states. Bond of spliced bars is dependent on transfer of tensile stress from the spliced reinforcement to the surrounding concrete which is in turn counts on various parameters such as: strand diameter, splice length, and surface configuration. The current design codes for steel reinforcement (ACI 318-14; CSA A23.3-94) are not applicable to FRPs due to the substantial differences in their mechanical properties. However, ACI 440 Committee has developed an equation to estimate the average bond strength for FRP bars from GFRP database that rendered conservative and inconvenient for the CFCC reinforcement. Therefore, more research is required to examine and quantify the average bond strength of the spliced CFCC reinforcement. Three types of bond tests were considered in this investigation; bond fatigue, flexure bond, and shear bond. To determine the CFCC upper value of bond strength, a pullout test was conducted on 29 small-scale specimens according to ACI 440.3R. These specimens consisted of concrete cubes reinforced with a single 0.6 in. (15.2 mm) CFCC strand embedded vertically along the central axis inside concrete. The high values of bond strength exhibited in static pullout tests did not reflect that in structural members where cover splitting or slippage of the strands could govern ultimate failure. For that purpose, and to study the bond strength of CFCC reinforcement, two different test configurations were examined in flexure and shear. In the flexure bond study, ten beams reinforced with two different sizes of CFCC strands of 0.5 in. (12.5 mm) and 0.6 in. (15.2 mm) that were tested under four point loading flexural test setup to failure. The beams were divided into two series, each series consisted of five beam specimens, one beam reinforced with continuous CFCC strands and four beams reinforced with spliced CFCC strands in the constant moment region with splice lengths of 1 ft (305 mm), 2 ft (610 mm), 3 ft (914 mm), and 4 ft. (1219 mm). The shear bond study for CFCC stirrups involved the construction and testing of four prestressed box-beams under shear loading test setup to failure. Further, to assess the performance of CFCC stirrups against that of steel, CFCC stirrups were provided from one beam end and steel stirrups were provided from the other beam end. The shear loading system of the box-beams included loading CFCC reinforced beam ends to failure followed by testing the steel stirrup beam ends under identical shear load configuration.

Book excerpt: Seismic Evaluation, Damage, and Mitigation in Structures covers recent developments in the field of seismic performance assessment of structures. Earthquakes are one of the main natural hazards that can directly cause damage to a structure or even instigate a structural collapse, resulting in significant economic and human loss of life. In the event of an earthquake where many buildings and infrastructure components are not able to function afterward, or if extensive repair and associated disruption are needed, it can be extremely costly and take a long time to resolve. Divided into three parts, this book reviews and discusses earthquake-induced damage evaluation in structures, the repair of structural and non-structural components, and seismic damage mitigation strategies. With contributions from the leading experts in the field, this book is for earthquake engineers, structural engineers, PhD students studying civil engineering, people who can easily inspect and repair structures for quick reoccupation, and for those who understand topics such as design and damage mitigation, and limited structural or non-structural damage in seismic events. Provides effective and economical methods to assess the seismic performance of structures Analyzes earthquake damage and repair or demolition of buildings Offers future needs for constructing seismic resistant structures
