Book excerpt: SEVERAL PEOPLE CONTRIBUTED to my writing of this book that is part memoir and part history, in places held together with the cartilage of fiction. First of all my wife, the former Mary Anne Hendon, with her sharp intellect and logical mind encouraged me to record this piece of my past and gave me helpful critiques. I made a cold call on John Lawrence Tome, associate professor of history at Georgia Tech, and author of War and Genocide in Cuba, 1895-1898. He met me with the gracious greeting “I’ll shake the hand that shook the hand of Leon Trotsky.” He suggested that I meet Dr. Ondina Gonzalez who at the time was teaching Latin American history at Emory University. I called on her and found an enthusiastic friend and supporter of this work. Ondina introduced me to her uncle and co-author, Dr, Justo Gonzalez, a noted Methodist minister, historian and writer. He graduated from the same Candler College in Havana that I had attended. As we talked we discovered we had lived only two blocks apart in the Havana of our younger days. Justo’s father had been instrumental in founding the ABC Party around a group of liberal intellectuals opposed to the dictatorship of the Cuban president, Gerardo Machado. My conversations with the two Doctors Gonzalez gave me good background material as well as a boost to my spirit. Ms. Lesbia Varona, research librarian in the Roberto Goizueta Collection at the Otto Richter Library of the University of Miami was most helpful in providing me access to microfilmed Cuban newspapers of the 1930’s and 1940’s and to the library’s material on Santería, the unique mixture of West African religious practices with those of Roman Catholicism

Book excerpt: The Hooligan's Return is Norman Manea's long-awaited memoir, a portrait of an artist that ranges freely from his early childhood in prewar Romania to his return there in 1997. In October l941, the entire Jewish population of Manea's native Bukovina was deported to concentration camps. Manea was among them, a child at the time, and his family spent four years there before they were able to return home. Embracing a Communist ethos as a teenager, he becomes disillusioned with the system in place in his country as he matures, having witnessed the growing injustices of dictatorship, and the false imprisonment of his father. But as a writer, Manea wrestles with the fear of losing his native language, his--real--homeland if he leaves his country, though it is clear to him that to stay under such a regime would be well-nigh impossible. Finally, in 1988, he settles in the United States, returning to Romania a decade later. A harrowing memoir, The Hooligan's Return freely traverses time and place, life and literature, dream and reality, past and present. Beautifully written and brilliantly conceived, this is the story of a writer more interested in ethics and aesthetics than in politics, a literary man consumed by questions of solitude and solidarity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A true story of two women speaking from self-imposed exile. Separated by seven centuries and an ocean, their stories intersect when Marie Laure makes a solo pilgrimage. She wants to understand why Julian of Norwich lived from age fifty in a cell, an anchorage, attached to a church during the Black Death plague. Her own so-called anchorage is a river porch attached to a Florida townhouse. How had she ended up in quasi-exile? Trying to make sense of it, she writes, just as Julian wrote to understand what had happened in a near-death experience. Alone in Julian’s anchorage, Marie confronts words etched in stone: “Thou art enough for me.” The words nag at her. Truth is, she could not say those words. Why had she come? Her handwritten words, “For my heart to heal,” speak across time when read aloud in the anchorage by a priest. Upon returning home, a global pandemic shutters the world, throwing everyone into exile, creating distance and longing for reunion. This second book in Marie Laure’s Serendipity Series continues to follow explorers of serendipitous moments on the continuum of shared spiritual stories.

Book excerpt: Herbert Jefferis Pennock (1894-1948) was a Hall of Fame pitcher for the dynastic 1920s New York Yankees. Considered one of the best left-handed pitchers in history, Pennock won 241 games on the mound, never lost in his five World Series starts, and came within four outs of pitching the first no-hitter in a World Series in 1927. More than just a great pitcher, Pennock was well-respected by teammates and locals alike. He was known as a principled, practical gentleman, with an intellect that matched his pitching skills and a humanity that bested both. In Herb Pennock: Baseball’s Faultless Pitcher, Keith Craigrecounts Pennock’s ascent from well-to-do Kennett Square to the heights of major league baseball. Signed by the Philadelphia A’s legendary Connie Mack as an 18-year-old school boy, Pennock would flourish into a dependable pitcher for the New York Yankees. He was part of the iconic Murderer’s Row team and played a crucial role in their World Series victories. For 22 seasons, Pennock’s forte was control, not power; he studied each hitter, every at bat, and exploited all weaknesses. When Pennock’s playing career came to an end, he used that same single-minded diligence as the General Manager of the woeful Philadelphia Phillies, where he reinvented the team through the careful development of its farm system that resulted in the 1950 pennant-winning Whiz Kids. Including interviews with Pennock’s family members and Kennett Square residents who personally knew the baseball legend, Herb Pennock: Baseball’s Faultless Pitcher is the first biography to paint such a complete picture of Pennock and the times he lived in. Featuring original photographs provided by his family, this book delivers an invaluable look into the life of a great ballplayer, savvy front-office executive, and honorable man.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Back at the end of the 1970s, three hundred copies of Neglect & Violence – Mental Nurse’s Training Manual were released by Wombat Printing NL to friends and the nurse’s underground. Forty plus years later it is now released to the public with little danger of litigation regarding libel or defamation. The back-cover blurb for MENTAL NURSES TRAINING MANUAL then had it that: ‘An ex-psychiatric nurse recalls his experiences after reporting a bashing and drinking on duty to his superiors. He exposes a cover-up by the hospital authorities and the State government bureaucracy then known as the Mental Health Authority. His report details murder and suicide cases and hints at widespread cruelty and indifference. His memories and impressions of the people he met working at a Melbourne mental hospital adds colour to a subject which bears thinking about. The author’s futile exploits as a candidate in the 1973 Victorian state election makes amusing and / or alarming reading, while his analysis of shortcomings in psychiatric practice might stimulate a new deal for the bewildered victims of our dog-eat-dog civilization…” “A must for all the up and coming maniacs.” – Gough Whitelamb in the Daylesford Gazette. “Lifts the lid off the sanity business.” – Clyde Pucker in the Yea Times. “Reading this book didn’t relieve my obsessive-compulsive-neurosis or my ethical dilemmas, but it gave me the pleasant feeling that I am not alone in this world with my belief in the prefectability of mankind through the exercise of hope fertilized by integrity.” – Malcolm Howard in the West Wyalong Whinger. “Whistle-blowing anti-psychiatry still resonates today.” Phil Saddams in the Rupert Warduck Stable

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aimed at both physics students and non-science majors, this unique book explains Einstein's special theory of relativity pictorially, using diagrams rather than equations. The diagrams guide the reader, step-by-step, from the basics of relativity to advanced topics including the addition of velocities, Lorentz contraction, time dilation, the twin paradox, Doppler shift, and Einstein's famous equation E=mc2. The distinctive figures throughout the book enable the reader to visualize the theory in a way that cannot be fully conveyed through equations alone. The illustrative explanations in this book maintain the logic and rigour necessary for physics students, yet are simple enough to be understood by non-scientists. The book also contains entertaining problems which challenge the reader's understanding of the materials covered.
