Book excerpt: When Amelia Morris saw a towering, beautiful chocolate cake in Bon Appétit and took the recipe home to recreate it for a Christmas day brunch she was hosting, it resulted in a terrible (but tasty) mess that had to be served in an oversize bowl. It was also a revelation. Both delicious and damaged, it seemed a physical metaphor for the many curious and unexpected situations she's found herself in throughout her life, from her brief career as a six-year-old wrestler to her Brady Bunch-style family (minus the housekeeper and the familial harmony) to her ill-fated twenty-something job at the School of Rock in Los Angeles. As a way to bring order to chaos and in search of a more meaningful lifestyle, she finds herself more and more at home in the kitchen, where she begins to learn that even if the results of her culinary efforts fall well short of the standard set by glossy food magazines, they can still bring satisfaction (and sustenance) to her and her family and friends. Full of hilarious observations about food, family, unemployment, romance, and the extremes of modern L.A., and featuring recipes as basic as Toasted Cheerios and as advanced as gâteau de crêpes, Bon Appétit is sure to resonate with anyone who has tried and failed, and been all the better for it.

Book excerpt: It Was Too Soon Before... is the autobiography of Richard Fullmer who wrote under the penname Dirk Vanden. He was a serious novelist in the early days of the development of the gay literary genre. His first books were published-augmented with sex scenes inserted by the publisher-as porn pulps. This autobiography tells the story of his life from his upbringing as a devout Mormon to his discovery of sexual realities, to his move to the gay meccas of San Francisco and Los Angeles in the 1960s and discovery of the thriving gay counterculture with all its sexual and psychedelic dimensions, through the death by AIDS of his longtime partner, to retirement and obscurity, to a "rebirth" as his books have been rediscovered by modern gay literary scholars. The book features an introduction by gay spirituality expert Toby Johnson and includes "The Wit & Wisdom of Gabriel Horny," a collection of humor and wisdom in short aphorisms that express the spiritual wisdom Fullmer has garnered through his 78 years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part travelogue and part memoire, John S. Dingas newest book is a sequel to Navigating the Contradictions of America and explores disparities between Americas past and present, from the perspective of an immigrant. Featuring characters both real and fictional, Dinga shares his observations about the realities of making a new life in a new country, with an occasional flashback to the former home. The desire to immigrate to America is one shared by people all over the world, people who are often unaware of what it takes to thrive in a competitive, capitalist world where nothing is the same as before. Settling down in a new environment and navigating the politics and stresses of finding a job are just two of the aspects of culture shock a new immigrant will face. Expectations and responsibilities from those back home also add to the new immigrants challenges, and Dinga offers his suggestions on how to thrive under those stresses as well. He speaks not only to the potential immigrant but to those officials in power on either side of the process as well. Learning to make the right choices when presented with so many options is another life lesson addressed. The American society, freedoms, choices, and government are envied in many corners of the world, and Dinga explores how that perception influences the decision to start the journey. People need to know that living in America has its challengeschallenges not often imagined when the desire to immigrate pushes them to cross deserts, oceans, and unfriendly skies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to popular media and scholarship, Detroit, the once-vibrant city that crumbled with the departure of the auto industry, is where dreams can be reborn. It is a place that, like America itself, is gritty and determined. It has faced the worst kind of adversity, and supposedly now it’s back. But what does this narrative of “new Detroit” leave out? Beautiful Wasteland reveals that the contemporary story of Detroit’s rebirth is an upcycled version of the American Dream, which has long imagined access to work, home, and upward mobility as race-neutral projects. They’re not. As Rebecca J. Kinney shows, the narratives of Detroit’s rise, decline, and potential to rise again are deeply steeped in material and ideological investments in whiteness. By remapping the narratives of contemporary Detroit through an extension of America’s frontier mythology, Kinney analyzes a cross-section of twentieth and twenty-first century cultural locations—an Internet forum, ruin photography, advertising, documentary film, and print and online media. She illuminates how the stories we tell about Detroit as a frontier of possibility enable the erasure of white privilege and systemic racism. By situating Detroit as a “beautiful wasteland,” both desirable and distressed, this shows how the narrative of ruin and possibility form a mutually constituted relationship: the city is possible precisely because of its perceived ruin. Beautiful Wasteland tackles the key questions about the future of postindustrial America. As cities around the country reckon with their own postindustrial landscapes, Rebecca Kinney cautions that development that elides considerations of race and class will only continue to replicate uneven access to the city for the poor, working class, and people of color.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wisconsin Historical Society published Harva Hachten's The Flavor of Wisconsin in 1981. It immediately became an invaluable resource on Wisconsin foods and foodways. This updated and expanded edition explores the multitude of changes in the food culture since the 1980s. It will find new audiences while continuing to delight the book’s many fans. And it will stand as a legacy to author Harva Hachten, who was at work on the revised edition at the time of her death in April 2006. While in many ways the first edition of The Flavor of Wisconsin has stood the test of time very well, food-related culture and business have changed immensely in the twenty-five years since its publication. Well-known regional food expert and author Terese Allen examines aspects of food, cooking, and eating that have changed or emerged since the first edition, including the explosion of farmers' markets; organic farming and sustainability; the "slow food" movement; artisanal breads, dairy, herb growers, and the like; and how relatively recent immigrants have contributed to Wisconsin's remarkably rich food scene.
