Book excerpt: Terror is defined as a state of intense or overwhelming fear. Terrorism is defined as the systematic use of terror especially as a means of coercion. The term terrorism was first coined in the 1790s to refer to the terror used during the French Revolution by the revolutionaries against their opponents. As time went by it then gradually began to be used to describe the use of any violent force by a state against domestic opponents to the more recent-day definitions of being considered as violence aimed at governments to dictate their policies, a means for threatening states into submission, or overthrow an existing regime. India has been victim to the scourge of terrorism for more than four decades with activities involving killings, massacres, and bombings against the nation and its people having been carried out as recently as Pulwana (2019). Out of the more than 100 attacks of terrorism since the 1980s, the six attacks that truly shook the soul of India were: *1993 Bombay Blasts- 260 people killed and more than 700 injured. *2001 Parliament Attack-9 policemen and a parliament staffer killed. *2006 Mumbai Train Bombing- 209 people killed and more than 700 injured.*2008 26/11 Mumbai attack-174 people killed and more than 300 wounded. *2016 Uri Attack- 18 soldiers killed in an attack on the Indian Army's 12 Brigade headquarters. *2019 Pulwama Attack- 44 Central Reserve Police Force personnel killed and 20 injured in an attack on the police convoy. *One such dreaded act of terrorism took place on the 29th of December 2011 sending shudders across the mighty nation of India, and the world. Islamic Religious Terrorists Hijack the Delhi-Gurgaon Metro train and threaten to kill all 1001 passengers on board if their demands are not met within the 12-hour deadline. The government of India is in no mood to relent since seeing as the demands seek the release of three dreaded terrorists who had acted against the Nation. At the same time, the government is acutely aware that they have the moral responsibility for the lives of its trapped citizens. National Security Adviser Robin India is entrusted with the task of negotiations that could lead to freeing the hostages. Can he secure their release through mere dialogue? Should he adopt another process to end the stalemate - a process that would weigh heavily on the conscience of the nation for all times to come? A murky situation that demanded a choice to be made--a choice---between Plan-A or Plan-B. Attempt a rescue without firing a single shot or retain the honor of the nation at all costs? Should they seek the help of foreign agencies, or should they go it on their own? Time certainly was not on their side, nor that of the hostages. A first of its kind situation wherein terrorists, on a "Do or Die" mission, managed to take command of a Metro train with no easy plan of deliverance available to the authorities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities across the globe are looking to develop affordable, environmentally friendly, and socially responsible transportation solutions that can meet the accessibility needs of expanding metropolitan populations and support future economic and urban development. When appropriately planned and properly implemented as part of a larger public transportation network, urban rail systems can provide rapid mobility and vital access to city centers from surrounding districts. High-performing urban rail services, when carefully approached as development projects, can help enhance quality of life by giving citizens access to employment opportunities, essential services, urban amenities, and neighboring communities. The purpose of this Handbook is to synthesize and disseminate knowledge to inform the planning, implementation, and operations of urban rail projects with a view towards: -- Emphasizing the need for early studies and project planning; -- Making projects more sustainable (economically, socially, and environmentally); -- Improving socioeconomic returns and access to opportunities for users; -- Maximizing the value of private participation, where appropriate; and -- Building capacity within project implementing and managing institutions This Handbook provides experiential advice to tackle the technical, institutional, and financial challenges faced by decision makers considering urban rail projects. It brings together the expertise of World Bank staff and the input of numerous specialists to synthesize international 'good practices' and recommendations that are independent of commercial, financial political, or other interests. The material presented is intended as an honest-broker guide to maximize the impact and manage the challenges of urban rail systems in cities in both developed and developing countries. Rather than identify a single approach, this Handbook acknowledges the complexities and context necessary when approaching an urban rail development by helping to prepare decision makers to ask the right questions, consider the key issues, perform the necessary studies, apply adequate tools, and learn from international good practice all at the right time in the project development process.

Book excerpt: Sreedharan's expertise and foresight-on behalf of those not as richly blessed as he was-ensured that political will was converted into a multipurpose railway project. The [Chithoni railway link] bridge was completed eleven weeks ahead of schedule and proved to be helpful to one and all. Two key railway projects changed the way India travels by train-the 760-km stretch of Konkan Railway and the Delhi Metro. Both the projects were up and running in seven years flat and the man in charge was Dr Elattuvalapil Sreedharan, popularly known as the Railway Man. He has been hailed as the messiah of new-age infrastructure projects and his success stories have become railway engineering benchmark. Respected, loved and equally hated, this book covers the amazing story of one man-his perseverance, beliefs, and public and private battles. India's Railway Man: A Biography of E. Sreedharan is a tribute to this extraordinary man.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking stock of the urban transport scenario in Indian cities, this is the first full-length study of the metro rail system in India. In recent times the metro rail has come up as a favoured alternative of mass transport in urban spaces faced with growing population, heightened vehicular traffic, and increased pollution. Using data, analysis, and first-hand information, this book tells the story of metro rail as proposed and undertaken across Indiafrom Kolkata in the east and Mumbai in the west to Delhi and Jaipur in the north and Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Kochi in the south. Focusing on the complexities of project planning and contrasting the Indian experience with those of its global counterparts, this volume distils important lessons for future infrastructure projects. While the metro rail system has considerably improved inter-city connectivity, the metro story in India is an ongoing one. With a Foreword by E. Sreedharan setting the stage, this volume will appeal to anybody keen to know more about urban transport in India, as well as policymakers, management professionals, and students and researchers of economics and business studies.

The importance of early railways in the industrialization of the United States and Europe is a fact all of us are familiar with. To witness the amazing parallel development of the railways in Japan, happening at much the same time as America was connecting its vast hinterland to the East and West coasts, is an eye-opening realization. Early Japanese Railways, tells the fascinating story of the rise of Japanese rail amidst a period of rapid modernization during Japan's Meiji era. Leaving behind centuries of stagnation and isolation, Japan would emerge into the 20th century as a leading modern industrialized state. The development of the railways was a significant factor in the cultural and technological development of Japan during this pivotal period. Free's rare photographic and historical materials concerning Japan's early railways, including a print showing the miniature steam engine brought to Japan by Admiral Perry aboard his "Black Ships" to demonstrate American superiority, combine to form a richly detailed account that will appeal to students of Japanese history and railway buffs alike. This one-of-a-kind book, Early Japanese Railways 1853-1914, illuminates for non-Japanese-speaking readers the early history of Japanese railroads and in the process the fascinating story of Japan's prewar industrial modernization. Anyone interested in train history or model trains will find this book a fascinating read.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Operations Research, grade: MERIT, language: English, abstract: The deregulation has revolutionized the air travel industry in India. The low-cost carrier's entry in India has been fulfilling the dream of many Indian people. However, in recent years, low-cost carriers in India are facing huge operational losses and led few carriers to undergo bankruptcy. The impact of high fuel costs, government policies, strikes and infrastructure constraints has led Indian LCCs to pass through a turbulence period. These constraints together place a question mark on Indian LCCs future sustainability and their growth in Indian airline industry. Therefore, this research is undertaken with an objective to conduct strategic analysis on Indian low-cost carriers and examine their future sustainability in the market. The strategic analysis has identified the current situation, and the key challenges faced by Indian low-cost carriers in current operating environment. The impact of internal and external environmental factors caused on Indian low-cost carriers has been also discussed in this report. In addition, this report also discusses the various business strategies followed by major Indian low-cost carriers like INDIGO, Go Air, Spice Jet and Jetlite. A survey has been conducted to identify the customer perception towards travel in low-cost carriers. Data gathered through survey was analyzed to answer key research questions in the report. The analysis and findings have been presented with a set of recommendations that helps the Indian low-cost carriers in upcoming days to improve their situation in the industry.
