Book excerpt: Fiber reinforced composites are weakened when bolt or rivet holes pierce the laminate to form mechanical joints. Premature failures occurring in the joint area have been a well recognized problem. In this investigation, unidirectional (all 0 deg), bidirectional (±45 deg), and tridirectional (0 deg, ±45 deg) graphite fiber/epoxy resin composites were fabricated to form a series of double-lap bolted joint models. These were tested to measure the joint strength effectiveness of transversely isotropic boron film colaminated locally at 6 and 12 volume percent levels. Results show that the addition of film plies to the highly directional fiber laminae increases the joint strength and stiffness up to 200 percent, the chief contribution of the boron film being high bearing strength and resistance to shear distortion. A novel test method for bolted lap joints was developed in which the bolt head pressure was maintained constant by means of preloaded springs, thus eliminating the ambiguity resulting from an inconstant contribution of the bolt clamping friction to the total joint strength. The strength weight effectiveness of boron film reinforcement in this particular application is demonstrated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation into the bolted joint strength of Kevlar/epoxy and graphite/ epoxy [0/45/90/-45]2s composite laminates is presented. The fundamental problem of a single bolt hole loaded symmetrically in tension is considered. The first objective of the study was to generalize the relationships between width, edge distance, hole size, thickness, washer diameter, and degree of lateral constraint with bolted joint strength based on experimental observations. The second objective, which is the focus of this paper, was to numerically predict the same observation using only the composite's lamina properties. The effective laminate behavior is calculated using a nonlinear laminate analysis based on lamina properties and ply orientations. The effective laminate properties are then input into a nonlinear finite-element analysis computer code to model the bolted joint. The predicted bolted joint failure regions and strengths were consistent with the experimental data, although improved nonlinear constitutive finite-element models are needed. The analysis is useful in predicting critical width, edge distance, and washer sizes needed to optimize bolted joint strength.

Emphasis was on obtaining information for HMF330C/34 cloth material at room temperature, 394, and 450 K; however, many specimens made from T300/5208 and AS/3501 tape laminates were tested to provide correlating information on bearing behavior and the importance of hole-bolt tolerances. Bearing strengths for quasi-isotropic laminates made from these three prepregs were similar. Complete removal of bolt torque was shown to reduce the bearing strength relative to fully torqued bolts by approximately 40 percent. Multiple bolt joints were tested using three different hole-bolt tolerances. Resulting strengths were encouragingly similar, indicating the materials were less brittle than might have been expected. This was particularly true for bearing failures. Loaded-bolt and open-hole tests on cloth laminates indicated a greater degree of effective ductility than indicated by available data for similar tape laminates. Layups with no 45-deg plies exhibited markedly greater brittleness than their quasi-isotropic brethren. The higher the temperature, the less was the ductility for both layups. Bolt head details were shown to exercise a strong influence on bearing strength for single lap joints.

Book excerpt: This paper presents the results of an experimental program that was conducted to evaluate the damage to the bolt hole as related to the fit of the bolt to the hole in the graphite-epoxy laminate when the joint is subjected to a fatigue load spectrum. The experimental program was conducted using a double-lap bolted-joint test specimen. Three types of bolt fit were used in the experiment: interference fit, clearance fit, and clearance fit with wet sealant. The bolts were torqued to values representing standard installation torque. The graphite-epoxy laminate used for the test specimens was pseudoisotropic laminate of (0/90, ±45)4S. The prepreg was T300/5208 and the laminate was cured in the standard Narmco 5208 cure cycle.

Both bonded and bolted joints of widths from one to ten inches were evaluated. Primary emphasis was on joints in boron-epoxy, and between boron-epoxy and titanium or aluminum. However, limited evaluations of graphite- epoxy/titanium and fiberglas-epoxy/titanium were included. Joint configurations evaluated were single and double splice butt joints; boron-epoxy to metal stepped single scarf joints; and surface to understructure attachments. All laminates and specimens were inspected non- destructively. Base material properties and process control measures were verified by destructive testing. Developing testing techniques and actual specimen testing was a major portion of the program.

Book excerpt: This report presents a literature review of the state-of-the-art analyticaland experimental methodologies adopted in the aerospace indestry for thedesign of mechanically fastened joints in composite structures. Results andconclusions obtained from the published literature relating to the effectsof critical parameters, which include composite material system, fastenerconfiguration and joint geometry, on the mechanical behaviour and failuremodes of composite mechanically fastened joints are discussed. Furtherresearch required to improve the design of composite mechanically fastenedjoints is identified as a result of this review.

Book excerpt: The papers contained herein were presented at the First International Conference on Composite Structures held at Paisley College of Technology, Paisley, Scotland, in September 1981. This conference was organised and sponsored by Paisley College of Technology in association with The Institution of Mechanical Engineers and The National Engineering Laboratory (UK). There can be little doubt that, within engineering circles, the use of composite materials has revolutionised traditional design concepts. The ability to tailor-make a material to suit prevailing environmental conditions whilst maintaining adequate reinforcement to withstand applied loading is unquestionably an attractive proposition. Significant weight savings can also be achieved by virtue of the high strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight characteristics of, for example, fibrous forms of composite materials. Such savings are clearly of paramount importance in transportation engineering and in particular aircraft and aerospace applications. Along with this considerable structural potential the engineer must accept an increased complexity of analysis. All too often in the past this has dissuaded the designer from considering composite materials as a viable, or indeed better, alternative to traditional engineering materials. Inherent prejudices within the engineering profession have also contributed, in no small way, to a certain wariness in appreciating the merits of composites. However, the potential benefits of composite materials are inescapable. The last two decades have seen a phenomenal increase in the use of composites in virtually every area of engineering, from the high technology v vi Preface aerospace application to the less demanding structural cladding situation.
