Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bolster's Quarterly Magazine, 1826, Vol. 1 However true this assertion of Mr. Curtis may be with respect to the climate of England, yet, the Tritoma Uvaria has become perfectly domes ticated in Ireland, and is now to be found in abundance in almost every gentleman's garden in the county of Cork, where it is exposed to all the variations of our climate, and where it may be seen flourishmg without ex; pet'isncing the slightest injury from the sun oi° summer, the rains of an tumu, or the frosts of winter; and in which, although only considered since its introduction into this country, as an ornament to the parterre and pleasure ground of the cultivator, yet has now, although a stranger and of foreign birth. Given hopeful promise to become anamralised benefactor of our native land. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Monthly Magazine and Literary Journal, 1826, Vol. 1: Original Papes Among the company that frequented the house was an officer of the gar rison, a countryman 0 her own, who, in spite of his youth, had visited several distant parts of the world, and seen severe service. He converted with Trelile on the climates and rich scenery ofthe Indies, and on the various luxuries common there; and to the wife he talked in a strain of lively narrative, varied with many compliments on her beaut and on the happiness the posses sion of a hand such as her's must confer. Oth were pleased with his society, the wife unfortunately too much so; and when Trelile, as was sometimes the case, passed the evenings in other company. Laura and their military guest found in each other's society that the hours fled too rapidl away. She made some attempts to resist the growing passion, but in vain er heart had never found its rest in her own home; and after man and repeated persue sions, urged with all the eloquence of passion, she quitted at last the roof of her husband, and fled with her lover. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Monthly Magazine, or British Register of Literature, Sciences, and the Belles-Lettres, Vol. 1: January to June, 1826 This is neither just nor liberal, and we cannot be sin-prized that the colo nists should require some guarantee before they dehver themselves and theiraproperties to the wild and visionary schemes of speculative indi vid 3. If the measure is a public measure, let its consequences rest upon public responsibility. As a great national work, every one must admit that it is worthy of the age in which we live, and of the country which it is our, pride to call our own but as it is a measure surrounded with difficulties it must be approached with caution. That it is prac ticable I firmly believe, and if undertaken by' the Government, and con ducted with temperance and prudence, it is perfectly reconcileable with the interests of the planters, and the security of the islands. That colonial property, unhampered by the continual agitation of this ques tion, retains its fair value in the estimation of European capitalists, is evident from the facility with which, we are told, the Commissioners of Hayti have negociated a loan for their government, to y the indemnity ed upon to the ancient proprietors of the island or the recognition 0 its independence. This payment denotes the feeling entertained by the blacks - that indemnity was due. Now this feeling, which has been acted upon, after a long lapse of years, by self-emancipated slaves, should be the ground-work of our own proceedings in the manumission of our negroes, and, before we commence any operations, we should seek an ample guarantee for the pro rty of the lanters and the safety of the colonies. The one is blende with the other. The dominion of Great Britain would fall with the annihilation of the whites: and the possession of our west-india Islands is now become of paramount im portance. The establishment of so many new ovemments in the American hemisphere has rendered them absolute y nece for the pfotection of our commerce and the extension of our tr e. The nited States of America have lon felt the inconveniency of having no harbour subject to their flag in the uro an seas, and frequent intrigues have been afloat to obtain one of the is da in the Mediterranean, but hitherto without success. The same, difficulties would attend our American commerce, if we suffered ourselves to lose our trans-atlantic possessions, either by the dissafl'ection of the whites, or the insurrection of the slaves. A must-read' Thomas Piketty 'The twentieth century's most prophetic critic of capitalism' Prospect Karl Polanyi's landmark 1944 work is one of the earliest and most powerful critiques of unregulated markets. Tracing the history of capitalism from the great transformation of the industrial revolution onwards, he shows that there has been nothing 'natural' about the market state. Instead of reducing human relations and our environment to mere commodities, the economy must always be embedded in civil society. Describing the 'avalanche of social dislocation' of his time, Polanyi's hugely influential work is a passionate call to protect our common humanity. 'Polanyi's vision for an alternative economy re-embedded in politics and social relations offers a refreshing alternative' Guardian 'Polanyi exposes the myth of the free market' Joseph Stiglitz With a new introduction by Gareth Dale
