Book excerpt: This document describes the Boise geothermal district heating project from preliminary feasibility studies completed in 1979 to a fully operational system by 1983. The report includes information about the two local governments that participated in the project - the City of Boise, Idaho and the Boise Warm Springs Water District. It also discusses the federal funding sources; the financial studies; the feasibility studies conducted; the general system planning and design; design of detailed system components; the legal issues involved in production; geological analysis of the resource area; distribution and disposal; the program to market system services; and the methods of retrofitting buildings to use geothermal hot water for space heating. Technically this report describes the Boise City district heating system based on 170°F water, a 4000 gpm production system, a 41,000 foot pipeline system, and system economies. Comparable data are also provided for the Boise Warm Springs Water District. 62 figs., 31 tabs.

Book excerpt: Geothermal district space heating has been practiced in Boise over the last 85 years. The system has used to wells drilled approximately 50 ft (15 m) apart in the early 1890s. the wells have a combined maximum reported production rate of 1800 gpm (114 l/sec) at 170°F (77°C) discharge at the wellhead. The system has served as many as 400 homes and Natatorium; presently it serves approximately 200 homes and a large state laboratory and office building. The heating district remained at the present capacity (two wells) for 85 years primarily because of the unknown nature of the reservoir and availability of other energy sources. Not until 1974 was the question of further development given serious consideration. Rising energy costs due to expanding energy demands and higher costs for foreign oil brought about a reevaluation of the resource. The INEL, Boise State University, and the Idaho Bureau of Mines and Geology began an investigation into the nature of the resource and the economics of space heating several large buildings and homes. Two deep, approximately 1250 ft (381 m), exploratory wells were drilled and tested by the INEL to determine the nature and size of the reservoir. Drilling and reservoir engineering test results have confirmed the presence of a large reservoir that can be developed further without adversely effecting the two production wells and heating system now in operation. 4 figs., 1 tab.

Book excerpt: The Federal action addressed by this environmental report is Department of Energy (DOE) cost-sharing support of a public geothermal development under PON EG-78-N-03-2047. This report was prepared to fulfill DOE's objectives under the Guidelines for Environmental Review contained in Title 10, Parts 711 and 790, Code of Federal Regulations, to evaluate the environmental impacts of the proposed action. The City of Boise, Idaho and the Boise Warm Springs Water District (BWSWD) propose to develop a large-scale space heating system using geothermal energy. The objective of the project is to demonstrate the technical, economic, and organizational feasibility of using low temperature geothermal fluid for a large-scale multi-jurisdictional space-heating system. The project would serve as a prototype to encourage the interest and cooperation of other jurisdictions in geothermal resource areas. The geothermal space heating system will be comprised of two separate and independent systems. BWSWD owns and operates its system and Boise City will own and operate its system, with both systems complementing each other when completed. The City system will serve predominately commercial customers, while the BWSWD system will serve primarily residential customers. The system planned for the City and the District are based on preliminary engineering studies. This is a practical plan based upon what appears to be feasible from an engineering as well as economic standpoint. It is intended to provide a foundation upon which future expansion of the systems is possible. DOE, the City of Boise, and the BWSWD have entered into a cost sharing program to fund a portion of the plan. For the City, this includes one geothermal production well located in the Military Reserve Park; one injection well; distribution pipelines to City buildings and the Downtown Mall area; and collection pipelines. The District project will include refurbishing the two existing wells; drilling one additional production well; and replacement of the present distribution lines. This report addresses the impacts potentially created from the space-heating project for both the City and the District. It would be remiss discussing impacts of only the portions of the larger plan which are funded; therefore, a larger scale project has been defined and addressed in this report.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geothermal district heating experience in the U.S. is reviewed and evaluated to explore the potential impact of utilizing this frequently undervalued renewable energy resource for space and hot water heating. Although the first U.S. geothermal district heating system (GDHS) was constructed in the 1890s in Boise, Idaho, growth in the sector has been slow. Currently there are only twenty-one operating GDHS in the U.S. with a capacity of about 100 MW thermal. In this study the main barriers and enablers to the growth of district heating were identified and investigated. Initially a literature review and interviews with current U.S. district heating operators were used to collect data on various aspects of the systems and their development. Based on analysis of the data and the current structure of the geothermal district heating regulatory and market environment in the U.S. recommendations on how to advance geothermal district heating in the U.S. are developed. Technical feasibility of increasing the geothermal district heating capacity to 10,000 MWt was established by identifying the available resource and technology for utilization. Furthermore, the opportunity presented by Engineered Geothermal System (EGS) was briefly explored. Social feasibility was analyzed and the need for geothermal energy education and expanded resource exploration was recognized. Furthermore, it is hypothesized that most government support for GDHS will come from state governments in the future and the importance of well structured incentives that support the growth of sustainable GDHS emphasized. Legal and regulatory barriers were reviewed along with the economic feasibility of GDHS. The economic analysis revealed competitive levelized energy costs and that rising drilling costs might be a barrier to GDHS development. A modest investment of about five billion dollars is needed to increase U.S. GDHS capacity to 10,000 MW thermal.

Book excerpt: Advanced District Heating and Cooling (DHC) Systems presents the latest information on the topic, providing valuable information on the distribution of centrally generated heat or cold energy to buildings, usually in the form of space heating, cooling, and hot water. As DHC systems are more efficient and less polluting than individual domestic or commercial heating and cooling systems, the book provides an introduction to DHC, including its potential contribution to reducing carbon dioxide emissions, then reviews thermal energy generation for DHC, including fossil fuel-based technologies, those based on renewables, and surplus heat valorization. Final sections address methods to improve the efficiency of DHC. Gives a comprehensive overview of DHC systems and the technologies and energy resources utilized within these systems Analyzes the various methods used for harnessing energy to apply to DHC systems Ideal resource for those interested in district cooling, teleheating, heat networks, distributed heating, thermal energy, cogeneration, combined heat and power, and CHP Reviews the application of DHC systems in the field, including both the business model side and the planning needed to implement these systems

Book excerpt: As part of our overall program of studying both the conceptual and actual set of institutional structures under which geothermal distribution systems might be formed and operated, the EWLI has also examined the institutional, economic and legal arrangements of presently functioning systems and of those in advanced planning stages. We have done this in an attempt to discover whether an analysis of the most fully developed present systems can in any way produce models on which future geothermal distribution systems might be based. The answer is problematic. ... We have chosen to discuss Boise, Klamath Falls, and Susanville because they are the most thoroughly planned, have reached the most advanced stage, are relatively large and have the longest histories of all the proposed systems. While the experiences of these cities cannot be measured against the ultimate standard of an operating history for a complete system, the formative years have produced an institutional structure for each system, a financial history related to the assumption of front-end costs, and detailed plans for development and management of the resource.
