Download or read book Animal Models written by J.B. Owen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book aims to review knowledge on the disorders of eating behaviour and body composition in some of the non-primate higher animals and to relate these to similar conditions in humans. With advances in understanding the nature of these disorders and their biological basis, it seems timely to assess what cross-species comparisons can tell us about the general underlying factors at work. This may also help to delineate what may be a general biological basis that humans share with their higher animal comrade species and what may distinguish human from non-human, particularly in a cultural context. This could help in combating better the problems of these conditions in the animal species as well as in man and in suggesting well-based preventive measures. As far as people are concerned the last two decades of the 20th century have shown a significant increase in obesity in the richer countries, particularly the USA (Table 1). Possibly associated with the obesity boom, there is an increasing awareness of other disorders of eating behaviour and body composition. These range from anorexia nervosa, at the other end of body composition to obesity, to others, such as bulimia, with more variable effects on body composition.
Book Synopsis The Design of Mammals by : John William Prothero
Download or read book The Design of Mammals written by John William Prothero and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-22 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite an astonishing 100 million-fold range in adult body mass from bumblebee bat to blue whale, all mammals are formed of the same kinds of molecules, cells, tissues and organs and to the same overall body plan. A scaling approach investigates the principles of mammal design by examining the ways in which mammals of diverse size and taxonomy are quantitatively comparable. This book presents an extensive reanalysis of scaling data collected over a quarter of a century, including many rarely or never-cited sources. The result is an unparalleled contribution to understanding scaling in mammals, addressing a uniquely extensive range of mammal attributes and using substantially larger and more rigorously screened samples than in any prior works. An invaluable resource for all those interested in the 'design' of mammals, this is an ideal resource for postgraduates and researchers in a range of fields from comparative physiology to ecology.
Book Synopsis Human Body Composition by : Gilbert B. Forbes
Download or read book Human Body Composition written by Gilbert B. Forbes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Man has always been curious about himself, a curiosity that began centuries ago with an examination of the soul, and that extended in the period of the Renaissance to his anatomy and certain functions such as the circulation of the blood. Chemical science entered the scene in the 18th century, and burst into prominence in the 19th century. As the various chemical elements were discovered, many were found to be present in body fluids and tissues. Organic compounds were recognized; it became known that body heat was produced by the combustion of food; chemical transformations such as the production of fat from carbohydrate were recognized; and in the 1850s it was determined that young animals differed from adults in certain aspects of body composition. As methods for chemical analysis evolved, they were applied to samples of body fluids and tissues, and it became apparent that life depended on chemical normality; and most importantly it was realized that given the necessary amount of food and water the body had the ability to maintain a degree of constancy of what Claude Bernard called the milieu interieur, in other words its interior chemical en vironment.
Book Synopsis Human Body Composition by : Josef Brožek
Download or read book Human Body Composition written by Josef Brožek and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-01-22 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human Body Composition: Approaches and Applications focuses on approaches to the description of human physique; clarification of the role of factors determining and modifying body composition; and assessment of biological and medical significance of individual differences in body composition. The selection first discusses advances and developments in the methods for the study of body composition and chemical analysis of the body. Discussions focus on direct and roentgenographic studies of bone mineralization; caliper and roentgenogrammetric values of the thickness of subcutaneous adipose tissue; and soft tissue roentgenography. The text also looks at determination of specific gravity of live sheep and its correlation with fat percentage and interpretation of whole body potassium measurements. The manuscript evaluates research on body composition and its relevance for human biology, including sex, growth, and aging, physical activity, loss and gain of body weight, and body composition in animals. The book also elaborates on sex difference in body composition, physical activity and body composition, hydrometry of growth and aging, and body composition and appraisal of nutriture. The selection is a reliable reference for readers interested in the composition of the human body.

Book Synopsis Human Body Composition by : Steven Heymsfield
Download or read book Human Body Composition written by Steven Heymsfield and published by Human Kinetics. This book was released on 2005 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2nd edition of Human Body Composition includes updated information and new chapters. The editors and 35 contributors are well respected researchers in the field of body composition science. This is one of few texts that provides comprehensive coverage of body composition research. The primary intent is to present current information on research methods. This book can serve as a textbook for those who are students or new researchers. Descriptions of various methods and background information are imparted in great detail with numerous references. New chapters address energy expenditure, animal body composition, molecular genetics and body composition as it relates to disease states of cancer, HIV, obesity and certain inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This book is recommended for students and new researchers in the field of body composition research who need to learn various methods, histories and practical applications--Publisher's description.
