Book excerpt: The Plan: In September of 2019, while a member of the 1st Grade class at a Catholic Elementary, Bobby began preparing for the Catholic Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. I fully anticipated his preparation would mirror that of his siblings, and quite frankly my own. God had other plans. The Challenge: In the Spring of 2020, due to restrictions associated with a global pandemic, Bobby's instruction converted to a non-traditional, online platform requiring staunch parental guidance and joint immersion in the preparation experience. The Blessing in Disguise: Along the way, Bobby and I both found unexpected, fun, knowledge, grace and enlightenment in his journey. At first, we decided to chronicle our experience for posterity. Shortly thereafter, Bobby decided that other children approaching the age of sacrament preparation might find value and comfort in reading about his journey. You are holding the result of his vision in your hands. Our hope and prayer is that you might find value in the content and have as much fun reading about our journey as we found living it.

Book excerpt: The remarkable story of a fireman who miraculously came out of a coma for one full day On a brutally cold December day, Donny Herbert, a hardworking firefighter from Buffalo, New York, was searching the attic of a burning house. The roof, heavy with snow, suddenly collapsed, and for six minutes he was without oxygen. Donny—a beloved husband, a father of four boys, and a neighborhood fixture who was always willing to lend a helping hand—fell into a vegetative state that lasted nearly a decade. His prognosis was poor, and while he could open his eyes, he was unresponsive to the world around him. Donny Herbert was, for all practical purposes, gone. Until one day, in April 2005, when he woke up and spoke almost nonstop to his family and loved ones for nearly sixteen hours. The Day Donny Herbert Woke Up is the story of this unforgettable time, which was covered by the press worldwide. After his extraordinary day, Donny fell into a deep sleep and never experienced a comparable moment of clarity. He died of pneumonia in February 2006. For his doctors and nurses, it is a medical mystery. For his wife, Linda, who had held the family together for years, who had prayed nightly for Donny’s recovery, no explanation is needed: prayer and love brought Donny back to her one last time. The Day Donny Herbert Woke Up is as much Linda’s story—one of perseverance and faith—as it is of an exceptional husband, father, and firefighter.

Book excerpt: Living in Vietnam for four years in the 1990s, Seattle native Kim Fay fell in love with the romantic landscapes, the rich culture, and the uninhibited warmth of the people. A decade later, she grew hungry for more. Inspired by the dream of learning to make a Vietnamese meal for her friends and family in America, Kim returned to Vietnam and embarked on an unforgettable five-week culinary journey from Hanoi to Saigon. Joined by her sister and best Vietnamese girlfriend, Kim set off to taste as much as possible while exploring rituals and traditions, street cafés and haute cuisine, famine and feast, and Communism and the legacy of war. Together, the three women discovered a society shaped by its ever-changing relationship with food. Every encounter serves up an enticing morsel, from uncovering the secret world of ragu in the French hill town of Dalat to bonding with the Julia Child of Vietnam in Saigon. Epicures and culture buffs will delight in markets, restaurants, farms, fisheries, and cooking classes as Kim assembles her dream meal and shares recipes such as banana flower salad and clay pot fish. Examining how we eat reflects who we are as individuals and as communities, Communion: A Culinary Journey Through Vietnam offers a feast for armchair gourmets, as well as a colorful guide for travelers hungering for their next adventure.
