Book excerpt: In today's world of ESPN Sports Center and the Top 10 Plays of the Day it's easy to get lost in a world of sports, flamboyant players and instant celebrity. This life, if you let it, can chew you up and spit you out with just the blink of an eye. The addiction and curiosity we're all guilty of having when it comes to watching these guys put on a show has become our most favorite past time. In the '70's the city of Louisville, KY was known for producing some of the best basketball talent in the world. Wes Unseld, Michael Redd, Henry Bacon, Ron Thomas, Ron King, Otto Petty, Tom Payne, Larry Harrelson, Wesley Cox, Wayne Golden, Ronnie Daniels, Flenoil Crook, Robert Miller, Darrell Griffith, Durand Macklin, Jeff Lamp, Lee Raker, Jerry Eaves, Winston Bennett, Tony Kimbro, Felton Spencer, Herbert Crook, Allan Houston, Dwayne Morton, Jermaine Brown, Maurice Morris, Jason Osbourne, Danyell Macklin, DeJuan Wheat, Derek Anderson and of course Bobby Turner. Moving to Louisville from Alabama Bobby quickly took the spotlight and achieved athletic success at an early age. He became one of the most competitive and powerful basketball players Louisville, KY would ever see. Unfortunately, it didn't take long for Bobby's fame and basketball success to cause this young man the pain and disappointment he never thought he'd experience, especially being a part of a sport he loved so much. Most of us think we know the story of this legendary athlete just as I did. The life and times of Bobby Turner will bring a completely unique perspective to how you start may or may not depend on how you finish. The unexpected twists and turns of his life were moments of celebration, winning, tragedy, loss, deception, alleged blackmail and ultimatums. He never gave up, he never quit. The mental toughness he learned to have on the court would soon help him off the court, the court of life.

The coughs and sputters of the engine that had always driven U of L sports--basketball--was concerning to an athletic department that was under fire for the failings of its football team and its athletic director. Basketball coach Denny Crum had taken the Cardinals to two NCAA Final fours in his first four seasons. Louisville had not been able to win the great prize, but its runs had given rise to great expectations. His next four squads burst out of the blocks with lightning speed, too. When each one wheezed in late February and came to a halt in mid-March, however, great hopes turned into great grumblings. Could Crum ever win the big one? Eighty-three minutes and 27 seconds into the season, the fifth starter, Scooter McCray, went out for good with a torn knee ligament. His replacement was brother Rodney, a freshman who had arrived in poor condition and with a poor attitude. We'll be lucky to win 15 games, Crum said. He had never won fewer than 20 in any of his eight campaigns, but no one argued with this pronouncement. Yet with a rookie, three sophomores, and star Darrell Griffith and his 48-inch vertical leap in the lineup, strange, zany, and enchanting things began to happen Wiley Brown was given a bionic thumb, and the prosthesis not only apparently helped his rebounding, but also stayed on most of the time. Manchild small forward Derek Smith talked of being from Jupiter one night and snatched 15 rebounds with his Goliath-sized hands the next. Reserve Roger Burkman's demolition derby aggression earned him the pen name Instant Defense while sub PonchoWright's cloud-tickling jumpers and jaw-dropping dunks got him the Instant Offense title. Rodney McCray transformed himself into an indispensable man not overnight, but over the course of a few minutes when his sibling went down. Above all this, quite literally and figuratively, was Griffith. He led as an athlete, by his graciousness and classy demeanor. They became a team that put winning above everything. Each of them would have welcomed any of the others into a foxhole. The discombobulated basketball team set an impossibly high standard of bonding through diversity and adversity and promptly answered that question posed by Crum's peers. Yes, he could win the big one.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NFL is the most popular professional sports league in the United States. Its athletes receive multimillion-dollar contracts and almost endless media attention. The league's most important game, the Super Bowl, is practically a national holiday. Making it to the NFL, however, is not about the promised land of fame and fortune. Robert W. Turner II draws on his personal experience as a former professional football player as well as interviews with more than 140 current and former NFL players to reveal what it means to be an athlete in the NFL and explain why so many players struggle with life after football. Without guaranteed contracts, the majority of players are forced out of the league after a few seasons. Over three-quarters of retirees experience bankruptcy or financial ruin, two-thirds live with chronic pain, and too many find themselves on the wrong side of the law. Robert W. Turner II argues that the fall from grace of so many players is no accident. The NFL, he contends, powerfully determines their experiences in and out of the league. The labor agreement provides little job security and few health and retirement benefits, and the owners refuse to share power with the players, making change difficult. And the process of becoming an elite football player--from high school to college and through the pros--leaves athletes with few marketable skills and little preparation for their first Sunday off the field. With compassion and objectivity, Not for Long reveals the life and mind of high school, college, and NFL athletes, shedding light on what might best help players transition successfully out of the sport.

And Smokey Jack loves his new life with his momma and the Colonel, the kindly old couple who recently adopted him, even though he fears he will not live up to his Colonel's high standards, something Smokey wants more than anything in the whole world. But their happy existence is interrupted when a mysterious blue mist engulfs Smokey during his first hunt with the Colonel, a mist accompanied by the unnatural-smelling Not-fox and a disembodied voice singing a childish tune. Leading to the night Smokey gets caught in a flash flood with Jasmine, the little girl who lives down the street from him. But the trouble really starts when Jasmine's older sister, Lily, dives into the quickly deepening current of Huntsman Creek after them. The Colonel can only watch as his young friends are washed into the floodplain's drainage pipe leading under the street! And in their desperate struggle for survival, the trio find themselves washed up against a strange convex object shaped much like an eye, housing an evil that should have been left alone.

Book excerpt: “A superbly researched and engagingly written biography” of NASCAR legend Curtis Turner, known as the Babe Ruth of stock car racing (Sports Illustrated). Curtis Turner’s life embodied everything that makes NASCAR the biggest spectator sport in American history; the adrenaline rush of the races, the potential for danger at every turn, and the charismatic, outrageous personality of a winner. Turner created drama at the racetrack and in his personal life, living the American Dream several times over before he died a violent and mysterious death at the age of forty-six. In gripping prose, and with access to the files of Turner’s widow, sports writer and author of NASCAR Generations Robert Edelstein offers the first complete chronicle of Turner’s life. From his days as a teenage moonshine runner in Virginia, through millions earned in fearless finance deals, to his incredible comeback after four years of being banned from the NASCAR circuit, Full Throttle lets you ride shotgun with the legend.

Book excerpt: Minden has transformed quite a bit since Charles Vedeer founded it in 1835. The town has suffered damages of the Civil War and Reconstruction and between 1872 and 1933 the devastation of five fires and a killer tornado. Despite disaster, Minden continues to progress, but adaptation and rebuilding have caused many familiar landmarks to vanish from the local landscape. The 1902 fire led to the enactment of a city ordinance banning wooden structures downtown; as a result, many edifices were reconstructed. Today, not a single building in the business district predates the 1870s, and the roles of those still standing—such as the First National Bank, which is expected to reopen as a restaurant—are continually changing. In 1918, another fire destroyed the Minden Lumber Mill, the town’s largest industry. Later in the 20th century, the development of a city government complex demolished an entire shopping district, the 1905 Webster Parish Courthouse, and Minden City Hall. Lost Minden captures catastrophes, celebrations, storefronts, and back streets that otherwise only remain in memories. ?John Agan is a lifelong Minden resident who has been actively involved in local history writing and research for more than 30 years. In the course of these activities, he accumulated most of the vintage photographs in this volume that depict the Minden that has since been “lost.”

Book excerpt: Lincolnton was born as a starting point for westward expansion in the days when America's frontier was Western North Carolina and Tennessee. The first textile mill in the South was built in Lincolnton, and although the industry suffered early setbacks, by the late 19th century, mills dominated the local economy. Today, Lincolnton manages to maintain its quiet Southern small-town atmosphere while offering the opportunities of a bustling, thriving city. Lincolnton's early history is recorded in deeds, will books, journals, and letters. From the 1940s through the 1970s, Clyde R. "Baby Ray" Cornwell (1912-1987) captured Lincolnton in images that showcase mill villages, civic organizations, parades, local government, and residents. No distinctions between race, gender, or socioeconomic background were seen through his lens. All of the photographs in Images of America: Lincolnton are from the Clyde R. "Baby Ray" Cornwell Collection, part of the permanent collection of the Lincoln County Museum of History. In 2005 the Lincoln County Historical Association celebrates its 50th anniversary. The Lincoln County Museum of History was organized and is maintained by the historical association for the collection, presentation, and promotion of the county's rich historic heritage.
