Download or read book Carolina Bluegrass written by Gail Wilson-Giarratano PhD and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-02 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Carolinas, bluegrass is more than music--it's a way of life. The origins of the genre date back to the earliest frontier settlements, and banjo music appeared at dances in Greenville, South Carolina, as early as 1780. The genre was essential to socialization in the textile mills of both states. Old-time music of the Blue Ridge Mountains heavily influenced the sound. Bill Monroe, considered by many to be the father of bluegrass, began his recording career in Charlotte in 1936. Many of the most popular bands, such as the Hired Hands and Briarhoppers, regularly performed live on local television stations in Columbia, Spartanburg and Charlotte. Today, bluegrass festivals fill local calendars across the region. Author Gail Wilson-Giarratano uses interviews and the historic record to tell this unique and compelling story.
Book Synopsis The Economic History of the Ming Dynasty by : Li Shi
Download or read book The Economic History of the Ming Dynasty written by Li Shi and published by DeepLogic. This book was released on with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is the volume of “The Economic History of the Ming Dynasty” among a series of books of “Deep into China Histories”. The earliest known written records of the history of China date from as early as 1250 BC, from the Shang dynasty (c. 1600–1046 BC) and the Bamboo Annals (296 BC) describe a Xia dynasty (c. 2070–1600 BC) before the Shang, but no writing is known from the period The Shang ruled in the Yellow River valley, which is commonly held to be the cradle of Chinese civilization. However, Neolithic civilizations originated at various cultural centers along both the Yellow River and Yangtze River. These Yellow River and Yangtze civilizations arose millennia before the Shang. With thousands of years of continuous history, China is one of the world's oldest civilizations, and is regarded as one of the cradles of civilization. The Zhou dynasty (1046–256 BC) supplanted the Shang and introduced the concept of the Mandate of Heaven to justify their rule. The central Zhou government began to weaken due to external and internal pressures in the 8th century BC, and the country eventually splintered into smaller states during the Spring and Autumn period. These states became independent and warred with one another in the following Warring States period. Much of traditional Chinese culture, literature and philosophy first developed during those troubled times. In 221 BC Qin Shi Huang conquered the various warring states and created for himself the title of Huangdi or "emperor" of the Qin, marking the beginning of imperial China. However, the oppressive government fell soon after his death, and was supplanted by the longer-lived Han dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD). Successive dynasties developed bureaucratic systems that enabled the emperor to control vast territories directly. In the 21 centuries from 206 BC until AD 1912, routine administrative tasks were handled by a special elite of scholar-officials. Young men, well-versed in calligraphy, history, literature, and philosophy, were carefully selected through difficult government examinations. China's last dynasty was the Qing (1644–1912), which was replaced by the Republic of China in 1912, and in the mainland by the People's Republic of China in 1949.Chinese history has alternated between periods of political unity and peace, and periods of war and failed statehood – the most recent being the Chinese Civil War (1927–1949). China was occasionally dominated by steppe peoples, most of whom were eventually assimilated into the Han Chinese culture and population. Between eras of multiple kingdoms and warlordism, Chinese dynasties have ruled parts or all of China; in some eras control stretched as far as Xinjiang and Tibet, as at present. Traditional culture, and influences from other parts of Asia and the Western world (carried by waves of immigration, cultural assimilation, expansion, and foreign contact), form the basis of the modern culture of China.

Book excerpt: Sustainability is a key framework for analyzing biological systems—and turfgrass is no exception. It is part of a complex that encompasses turfgrass interactions with different environments and the suitability of different turfgrasses for specific environments. In addition to its biological role, turfgrass—in the form of lawns, green spaces, and playing surfaces—brings beneficial sociological effects to an increasingly urbanized society. This book presents a comprehensive overview of current knowledge and issues in the field of turfgrass research and management, including the genetics and breeding, the diseases and pests, and the ecology of turfgrasses, and will appeal to a broad spectrum of readers.

Book excerpt: Drew loved their new home in Negley, Ohio. He was happier here. It was a much safer environment to raise his children. He was concerned about the pictures he found in a drawer of missing children from the area. Surely there was no need for concern as some of the pictures dated back to the 1950s. He was concerned, however, about the homeless family living in the deserted brick house across the creek. It was not a safe place for the children living there.
Download or read book Deb written by Judy Lennington and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-02-04 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Debbi stared at the newspaper article written about her accident which took place in Monte Alto, Pennsylvania. They were calling her the lady with angels riding in her back seat. Her recovery was truly amazing. It didn’t mention her new abilities since waking from her coma. How is it she can move objects with her mind and heal people by touching them? Was all of this related to the strange lights in the sky the night of her accident, and who were the four strangers who showed up at the accident to pray for her after they pronounced her dead and placed her in a body bag? She felt a strong urge to keep all of this a secret for the doctors were already urging her to admit herself into a facility so they could study her progress. This novel, although fiction, is based on true facts surrounding an automobile accident that took place in Monte Alto, Pennsylvania in September of 1995.

They know their enemy. They have a plan. Yet the more they know, the less certain they are about the outcome. Tutulies everywhere. Mass genocide by the ruler, who just happens to be Ez’s female parent. And it doesn’t help that Alan, Ez’s human lover, slipped into the dimension of Endor, even though he was told not to. He only complicates things. But with a ready-made army, an alliance with their biggest enemies to help solidify the possibility of their success, and a coven of witches, they just might succeed. Ez wants to save her fellow Endorians and go back to Earth to become human. Austrello wants the same thing. They’ve got the biggest motivation anyone could have—love. And they’ve got a riddle to solve. Bound Together, the fourth and final book in the Witch of Endor series, takes us to the dimension of Endor, to friends old and new, and to a climactic ending that might leave Ez without the one thing she wants—a life with Alan as a human. It’s a series unlike any before full of interdimensional travel, deceit, infinite power, and love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: She opens the door and, in a split second, her past and her destiny collide. Esther “Ez” Summers could never have prepared herself for what she’d find when that door swung open. Standing there, big, dark, and beautiful, is someone she’s never met, someone who’s beyond familiar. And someone who’s going to ask more of her than anyone has in over fifty-five million years. She’s not ready. At least she thinks she’s not. But Austrello, a man she’d only met a second before, asks her to do the unthinkable and return to her home dimension of Endor. She fears she’ll be ended as soon as she steps through that portal, but her people need her. The evil that’s fallen upon them is something they can’t fight alone. They need a hero. They need a warrior. They need their queen. And she needs Alan, but she knows this journey will be too much for him—too dangerous and possibly too long. If she leaves, she believes they’ll never see each other again. She doesn’t want to go. Austrello doesn’t want to go. But Alan does, and she knows he can’t. Arrangements are made and concessions are brokered, concessions that are undone with one small mistake. The third book in the Witch of Endor series, Torn Apart introduces us to the one person who can lure Ez back to Endor. Between the sci-fi romance, quantum mechanics, and theoretical physics is a real-world question every soldier in history has asked: Are there some things worth the journey when you walk away from love?

Download or read book The Starday Story written by Nathan D. Gibson and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2011-06-30 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Association of Recorded Sound Collections Awards for Excellence Best Research in Record Labels–Certificate of Merit (2012) The Starday Story: The House That Country Music Built is the first book entirely dedicated to one of the most influential music labels of the twentieth century. In addition to creating the largest bluegrass catalogue throughout the 1950s and '60s, Starday was also known for its legendary rockabilly catalogue, an extensive Texas honky-tonk outpouring, classic gospel and sacred recordings, and as a Nashville independent powerhouse studio and label. Written with label president and co-founder Don Pierce, this book traces the label's origins in 1953 through the 1968 Starday-King merger. Interviews with artists and their families, employees, and Pierce contribute to the stories behind famous hit songs, including "Y'all Come," "A Satisfied Mind," "Why Baby Why," "Giddy-up Go," "Alabam," and many others. Gibson's research and interviews also shed new light on the musical careers of George Jones, Arlie Duff, Willie Nelson, Roger Miller, the Stanley Brothers, Cowboy Copas, Red Sovine, and countless other Starday artists. Conversations with the children of Pappy Daily and Jack Starns provide a unique perspective on the early days of Starday, and extensive interviews with Pierce offer an insider glance at the country music industry during its golden era. Weathering through the storm of rock and roll and, later, the Nashville Sound, Starday was a home to traditional country musicians and became one of the most successful independent labels in American history. Ultimately, The Starday Story is the definitive record of a country music label that played an integral role in preserving our nation's musical heritage.
Book Synopsis Duel for the Crown by : Linda Carroll
Download or read book Duel for the Crown written by Linda Carroll and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-04-22 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gripping look at the great duel between Affirmed, the last horse to win the Triple Crown—comprised of the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes—and his archrival, Alydar. From the moment they first galloped head-to-head in Saratoga Springs, the two chestnut colts showed they were the stuff of racing legend. Alydar, all muscle with a fearsome closing kick, was already the popular favorite to win the Kentucky Derby. Affirmed, deceptively laid-back streamlined elegance, was powered forward by his steely determination not to settle for second place. In the Sport of Kings, the Triple Crown is the most valued prize, requiring a horse to win not just one race, but three: the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes. And 1978 would not be just for the record books, but also one of the greatest dramas ever played out in the racing world. There were names to conjure with, worthy of the Sport of Kings. The bloodline of Native Dancer. The teen wonderboy jockey Steve Cauthen. The once unbeatable Calumet Farm—the Damn Yankees of the racing world—now in eclipse and hoping for a comeback. The newcomer Harbor View Farm—owned by brash financier Louis Wolfson, who wouldn’t let even a conviction and a prison sentence for securities violations stand in the way of his dreams of glory. And the racetracks themselves: Belmont, Saratoga, Pimlico. And, of course, Churchill Downs. It has been thirty-five years since Affirmed and Alydar fought for the Triple Crown, thirty-five years when no other horse has won it. Duel for the Crown brings this epic battle to life. Not just two magnificent Thoroughbreds but the colorful human personalities surrounding them, caught up in an ever-intensifying battle of will and wits that lasted until the photo finish of the final Triple Crown race . . . and Alydar and Affirmed leaped into the history books.
