Book Synopsis This Atom Bomb in Me by : Lindsey A. Freeman
Download or read book This Atom Bomb in Me written by Lindsey A. Freeman and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2019-02-12 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Atom Bomb in Me traces what it felt like to grow up suffused with American nuclear culture in and around the atomic city of Oak Ridge, Tennessee. As a secret city during the Manhattan Project, Oak Ridge enriched the uranium that powered Little Boy, the bomb that destroyed Hiroshima. The city was a major nuclear production site throughout the Cold War, adding something to each and every bomb in the United States arsenal. Even today, Oak Ridge contains the world's largest supply of fissionable uranium. The granddaughter of an atomic courier, Lindsey A. Freeman turns a critical yet nostalgic eye to the place where her family was sent as part of a covert government plan. Theirs was a city devoted to nuclear science within a larger America obsessed with its nuclear prowess. Through memories, mysterious photographs, and uncanny childhood toys, she shows how Reagan-era politics and nuclear culture irradiated the late twentieth century. Alternately tender and alarming, her book takes a Geiger counter to recent history, reading the half-life of the atomic past as it resonates in our tense nuclear present.

Download or read book The Rising Sun written by John Toland and published by Modern Library. This book was released on 2014-11-26 with total page 977 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[The Rising Sun] is quite possibly the most readable, yet informative account of the Pacific war.”—Chicago Sun-Times This Pulitzer Prize–winning history of World War II chronicles the dramatic rise and fall of the Japanese empire, from the invasion of Manchuria and China to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Told from the Japanese perspective, The Rising Sun is, in the author’s words, “a factual saga of people caught up in the flood of the most overwhelming war of mankind, told as it happened—muddled, ennobling, disgraceful, frustrating, full of paradox.” In weaving together the historical facts and human drama leading up to and culminating in the war in the Pacific, Toland crafts a riveting and unbiased narrative history. In his Foreword, Toland says that if we are to draw any conclusion from The Rising Sun, it is “that there are no simple lessons in history, that it is human nature that repeats itself, not history.” “Unbelievably rich . . . readable and exciting . . .The best parts of [Toland’s] book are not the battle scenes but the intimate view he gives of the highest reaches of Tokyo politics.”—Newsweek

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the theme of continuous wreaking of brutal persecution of a Hindu family on the one hand and the uncompromising efforts of Muslim friends and neighbours to protect this family on the other. It is set against the resultant and barbaric forces let loose after the propagation of the two nation theory, and the ultimate partition of India in 1947. Based on the soical biography of a Hindu family that stayed back in East Pakistan, it traces their journey, how they became 'other' in the country of their birth and faced persecution. This, being branded the other, led to part of the family migrating to Inida, away from their natal roots. The 1965 India-Pakistan war further brought prolonged separation and sufferings for these half-families living on both sides of the borders. Subjecting one to encounter helplessness, uncertainty and poverty in India, and the other to state sponsored apathy, coercion, arrests and physical tortures. The vicious atmosphere of violent communal aggression though did not stop their Muslim friends from protecting them. When the Muslim friend was killed by the religious fanatics in the newly liberated Bangladesh, the left behind member of the Hindu family realized that it was time to leave their motherland for India, where they died with the desire to go back to their motherland, buried along with them. Despite prolonged violence and tragic separation thereafter, numerous memories of the self-sacrificing efforts of the compatriots served as recollection in collective living in the Indian subcontinent.

Book excerpt: What could be better than opening a beautiful book on a long, cold, winter evening and allowing oneself to be comfortably transported on the wings of imagination across different areas of the world and to experience its beauties and its dark sides or, for instance, take a walk through a winter forest, heavily laden with soft snow, which is joyously sparkling under the sunrays that are playfully penetrating the spruce tree branches, and follow a walker - explorer and his friend, Bricky, the dog. The two of them are exploring the near and far surroundings of their home, situated in the high, mountain world. The explorer's grandpa lives in that home; in his younger years he was a diplomat, who was sent on important missions throughout the world in order to help solve difficult global problems. Even now, in his old age, he is trying to help the suffering humanity. He is therefore endowed with rich life experience and broad knowledge, which greatly attracts the young explorer. Thus an interesting conversation develops between them, which takes place during the carefree time of winter holidays.
