I 'll be more merciful to his millions; but asking him to put up half of a cool hundred and fifty thou sand is a bit raw. Wish I had a nice little glad play with an under twenty cast for him to cut his teeth on instead of the 'rosie Posie. Book excerpt: The need of a large sum of money in a great hurry is the root of many noble ambitions, in whose branches roost strange companies of birds, pecking away for dollars that grow—or do not—on bushes. And it was in such a quest that Miss Patricia Adair of Adairville, Kentucky, lit upon a limb of life beside Mr. Godfrey Vandeford of Broadway, New York. Their joint endeavors made a great adventure."There's nothing to it, Pop; either pony girls will have to grow four legs to cut new capers, somebody will have to write a play entitled 'When Courtship Was in Flower,' requiring flowered skirts ten yards wide with a punch in each furbelow, or we go out of the theatrical business," said Mr. Vandeford, as he shuffled a faint, violet-tinted letter out of a pile of advertising posters emblazoned with dancing girls and men, several personal bills, two from a theatrical storage house and one from an electrical expert, leaned back in his chair, and prepared to open the violet communication. "We dropped twenty thousand cool on 'Miss Cut-up,' and those sixteen pairs of legs cost us fifteen hundred a week. We might be in danger of starving right here on Broadway, if we hadn't picked a sure-fire hit in 'The Rosie Posie Girl.'"

For to-day he is a distinct remnant of Colonial times - a distinct relic of an anglo-saxon past. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Bluegrass Bluesman written by Josh Graves and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pivotal member of the hugely successful bluegrass band Flatt and Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys, Dobro pioneer Josh Graves (1927-2006) was a living link between bluegrass music and the blues. In Bluegrass Bluesman, this influential performer shares the story of his lifelong career in music. In lively anecdotes, Graves describes his upbringing in East Tennessee and the climate in which bluegrass music emerged during the 1940s. Deeply influenced by the blues, he adapted Earl Scruggs's revolutionary banjo style to the Dobro resonator slide guitar and gave the Foggy Mountain Boys their distinctive sound. Graves' accounts of daily life on the road through the 1950s and 1960s reveal the band's dedication to musical excellence, Scruggs' leadership, and an often grueling life on the road. He also comments on his later career when he played in Lester Flatt's Nashville Grass and the Earl Scruggs Revue and collaborated with the likes of Boz Scaggs, Charlie McCoy, Kenny Baker, Eddie Adcock, Jesse McReynolds, Marty Stuart, Jerry Douglas, Alison Krauss, and his three musical sons. A colorful storyteller, Graves brings to life the world of an American troubadour and the mountain culture that he never left behind. Born in Tellico Plains, Tennessee, Josh Graves (1927-2006) is universally acknowledged as the father of the bluegrass Dobro. In 1997 he was inducted into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Blue Grass Cook Book It is June in Japan, and it is June in that blessed land of the Blue Grass. The sun shines there, no doubt, right now: the corn top's. Ripe; the meadows are in bloom and along turnpike and out in the fields the song and laughter of darkies make gay the air. It is early morning. The singing of birds comes through the open windows - the chatter of blackbirds and the mid-air calls of far away meadow larks. Through those windows sleepy eyes see wood and field, with stretches of blossoming blue grass rip pling in the wind. Another half-conscious doze for an hour, another awakening, and by your bed stands a black boy in a snowy apron, his white teeth shining, and in his kindly black paws a silver goblet on a silver tray. Heavens, how it hurts to smell that mint this far away The goblet is gleaming with frost, and the mint is still drenched. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Old Kentucky: A Story of the Bluegrass and the Mountains Founded on Charles T. Dazey's Play HE was coming, singing, down the side of S Nebo Mountain - Old Nebo - mounted on an ox. Sun-kissed and rich her coloring; her flowing hair was like spun light; her arms, bare to the elbows and above, might have been the models to drive a sculptor to despair, as their mus cles played like pulsing liquid beneath the tinted, velvet skin of wrists and forearms; her short skirt bared her shapely legs above the ankles half-way to the knees; her feet, never pinched by shoes and now quite bare, slender, graceful, patrician in their modelling, in strong contrast to the linsey-woolsey of her gown and rough surroundings, were as dainty as a dancing girl's in ancient Athens. The ox, less stolid than is common with his kind, doubtless because of ease of life, swung down the rocky path at a good gait, now and then swaying his head from side to side to nip the tender shoots of freshly leaving laurel. She sang: Woodpecker pecked as a woodpecker will, Jim thought 'twas a knock on the door of the still. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A bit wayward, forsooth, a little too fond of tarrying at roadside inns, but the slaves worshipped him, and Aunt Emmeline' s eyes had a trick of turning moist whenever she watched him swing to the back of his big bay horse and go galloping away.' 'too good for the company he keeps! She would mur mur; but where could company be found his equal? Maybe at the court of kings! And this doting, foolish maiden aunt, the Colonel's sister, who kept the domestic machinery running smooth ly at the mansion, would dab each pale, patrician lid with a wad of linen and lace and lavender, and turn to her duties with a little sigh.
